• If a vehicle ahead is narrow, such as a personal mobility vehi cle
• If a preceding vehicle has a small rear end, such as an unload ed truck
• If a vehicle ahead is carrying a load which protrudes past its rear bumper
• If a vehicle ahead is irregularly shaped, such as a tractor or side car
• If a vehicle ahead is a child sized bicycle, a bicycle that is carrying a large
load, a bicycle ridden by more than one person, or a uniquely shaped
bicycle (bicycle with a child seat, tandem bicycle, etc.)
• If a pedestrian/ or the riding height of a bicyclist ahead is shorter than
approximately 3.2 ft. (1 m) or taller than approximately 6.5 ft. (2 m)
• If a pedestrian/bicyclist is wearing oversized clothing (a rai n coat, long
skirt, etc.), making their silhouette obscure
• If a pedestrian is bending forward or squatting or bicyclist i s bending for-
ward
• If a pedestrian/bicyclist is moving fast
• If a pedestrian is pushing a stroller, wheelchair, bicycle or other vehicle
• When driving in inclement weather such as heavy rain, fog, snow or a sandstorm
• When driving through steam or smoke
• When the surrounding area is dim, such as at dawn or dusk, or while at
night or in a tunnel, making a detectable object appear to be n early the
same color as its surroundings
• When driving in a place where the surrounding brightness changes sud- denly, such as at the entrance or exit of a tunnel
• After the hybrid system has started the vehicle has not been d riven for a
certain amount of time
• While making a left/right turn and for a few seconds after mak ing a left/
right turn
• While driving on a curve and for a few seconds after driving o n a curve
• If your vehicle is skidding • If a preceding vehicle has a low rear
end, such as a low bed trailer
• If a vehicle ahead has extremely high ground clearance

■When the sensor may not be correctly detect ing the vehicle ahead
In the case of the following and depending on the conditions, o perate the
brake pedal when deceleration of the system is insufficient or operate the
accelerator pedal when acceleration is required.
As the sensor may not be able to correctly detect these types o f vehicles, the
approach warning ( P. 290) may not be activated.
● Vehicles that cut in suddenly
● Vehicles traveling at low speeds
● Vehicles that are not moving in the same lane
● Vehicles with small rear ends (trailers with no load on board, etc.)
● Motorcycles traveling in the same lane
● When water or snow thrown up by the surrounding vehicles hinders the
detecting of the sensor
●When your vehicle is pointing upwards
(caused by a heavy load in the luggage
compartment, etc.)
● Preceding vehicle has an extremely
high ground clearance

■Re-enabling the Intellig ent Clearance Sonar system
To re-enable the Intelligent Clearance Sonar system when it is disabled due
to operation of the Intelligent Clearance Sonar function, either enable the sys-
tem again (P. 324), or turn the power switch off and then back to ON mode.
Additionally, if the object becomes no longer in the traveling direction of the
vehicle or if the traveling direction of the vehicle changes (such as changing
from moving forward to backing up, or from backing up to moving forward),
the system will be re-enabled automatically.
■ Objects that the Intelligent Clearance Sonar function may not d etect
The sensors may not be able to detect certain objects, such as the following.
● Cotton cloth, snow, and other materials that are poor reflector s of ultrasonic
waves.
(People may also not be detected depending on the type of cloth ing they are
wearing.)
● Objects which are not perpendicular to the ground, are not perp endicular to
the traveling direction of the vehicle, are uneven or are wavin g.
● Low objects
● Thin objects such as wires, fences, ropes and signposts
● Objects that are extremely close to the bumper
■ Situations in which the Intelligent Clearance Sonar may not ope rate
properly
When the shift lever is in N.
■ Intuitive parking assist buzzer
Regardless of whether the intuitive parking assist system is en abled or not
( P. 313), if the Intelligent Clearance Sonar system is enabled ( P. 324),
the front or rear sensors detect an object and brake control is performed, the
intuitive parking assist buzzer will sound to notify the driver of the approxi-
mate distance to the object.

When trouble arises
The following may indicate a problem with your transmission. Contact
your Toyota dealer or commercial towing service before towing.
● The hybrid system warning message is shown on the multi-informa -
tion display and the vehicle does not move.
● The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
NOTICE
■To prevent damage to the vehicle when towing using a wheel-lift type
truck
● Do not tow the vehicle from the rear when the power switch is off. The
steering lock mechanism is not strong enough to hold the front wheels
straight.
● When raising the vehicle, ensure adequate ground clearance for towing at
the opposite end of the raised vehicle. Without adequate clearance, the
vehicle could be damaged while being towed.
■ To prevent damage to the vehicle when towing with a sling-type truck
Do not tow with a sling-type truck, either from the front or re a r.
■ To prevent damage to the vehicle during emergency towing
Do not secure cables or chains to the suspension components.
Situations when it is necessary to contact dealers before towing
Towing with a wheel-lift type truck
From the frontFrom the rear
Release the parking brake.
Turn automatic mode off.
