PRECAUTION
1. BASIC REPAIR HINT
(a) HINTS ON OPERATIONS
1LooksAlways wear a clean uniform.
Hat and safety shoes must be worn.
2Vehicle protectionSet a grill cover, fender cover, seat cover and floor mat before starting operation.
3Safe operation
When working with 2 or more persons, be sure to check the safety of one \
another.
When working with the engine running, pay attention to providing ventila\
tion for exhaust fumes in the work-
shop.
When working with high±temperatures, rotating, moving or vibrating pa\
rts, be careful not to burn or injure
yourself.
When jacking up the vehicle, be sure to support the specified location w\
ith a safety stand.
When lifting up the vehicle, use safety equipment.
4Preparation of tools and
measuring gaugeBefore starting repairs, prepare the tool stand, SST, gauge, oil, shop rag and parts for replacement.
5
Removal and installation,
disassembly and assem-
bly operations
Diagnose with a thorough understanding of the trouble condition and perf\
orm effective operation.
Before removing the parts, check the general condition of the assembly, and for deformation and damage.
When the structure is complicated, take a notes or make matchmarks as no\
t to make mistakes that affect the
function of the parts.
Clean and wash the removed parts if necessary and assemble them after a \
thorough check.
6Removed parts
Place the removed parts in the correct order to avoid mixing them up or \
making them dirty.
As for non±reusable parts such as gaskets, O±rings, and self±lo\
cking nuts, replace them with new ones
following the instructions in this manual.
Organize the parts that were replaced in a box and show them to the cust\
omer.

AVENSIS REPAIR MANUAL (RM1018E)
(8) Oil or water should not be put on the front seat outer belt and the front seat outer belt should be
cleaned with the appropriate detergents.
(i) AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY (1) Never reuse the airbag sensor assembly involved in a collision where the\
SRS has deployed.
(2) The connectors to the airbag sensor assembly should be connected or disc\
onnected with thesensor mounted on the floor. If the connectors are connected or disconnected while the airbag
sensor assembly is not mounted to the floor, it could cause an undesired ignition of the supple-
mental restraint system.
(3) Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is t\
urned to the ºLOCKº position and the negative (±) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery, even if only loosen-
ing the set bolts of the airbag sensor assembly.
(j) WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR
(1) The SRS wire harness is integrated with the instrument panel wire harness a\
ssembly. All connec-tors in the system are a standard yellow color. If the SRS wire harness becomes disconnected
or the connector becomes broken due to an accident, etc., repair or repl\
ace it.
3. ELECTRONIC CONTROL
(a) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF BATTERY TERMI-NAL
(1) Before performing electronic work, disconnect thebattery negative (±) terminal cable beforehand in
order to prevent it from shorting and burning out.
(2) When disconnecting and insta lling the terminal
cable, turn the ignition switch and lighting switch
OFF, and loosen the terminal nut completely. Per-
form these operations without twisting or prying the
terminal.
(3) When the battery terminal cable is removed, the memories of the clock, radio, DTCs, etc. are erased.
So before removing it, check them and make a note
of their settings.
(4) When the battery negative (±) terminal cable is dis- connected, memories of various systems are
erased. Therefore, refer to the PRE±CHECK for
each system to make sure whether or not the sys-
tem needs to be initialized after the battery negative

INSPECTION
1. INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER
(a) Output voltage inspection. (1) Apply battery voltage across terminals 1 (+B) and 2(E2G).
(2) Using a voltmeter, connect the positive (+) tester probe to terminal 3 (VG), and negative (±) tester
probe to terminal 2 (E2G).
(3) Blow air into the MAF meter, and check that the volt- age fluctuates.
(b) Resistance inspection. (1) Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance be-
tween terminals 4 (THA) and 5 (E2).
Resistance:
TerminalsResistanceTemperature
THA ± E213.6 to 18.4 k±20 C (±4 F)
THA ± E22.21 to 2.69 k20 C (68 F)
THA ± E20.49 to 0.67 k60 C (140 F)
2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE
ASSY
(a) Resistance inspection. (1) Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance be-
tween the terminals.
Resistance: 6.9 to 7.9 at 20 C (68 F)
(b) Movement inspection. (1) Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to ter-minal 1 and negative (±) lead to terminal 2, and
check the movement of the valve.
NOTICE:
Confirm the valve does not adhere.
HINT:
Bad returning of the valve by entrance of foreign objects causes
subtle pressure leak to the advanced direction. Then, DTC can
be detected.
3. INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSY
(a) Check throttle body. (1) Check that throttle valve shaft is not rickety.
(2) Check that each port is not stopped up.
(3) Check that throttle valve opens and closes smooth-
ly.
(4) Check that there is no clearance between the
throttle stop screw and throttle lever when the
closed throttle position.
