REMOVAL OF COOLING UNIT
1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE CABLE FROM BATTERY
2. DISCHARGE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM
3. DISCONNECT SUCTION TUBE FROM COOLING UNIT
OUTLET FITTING
4. DISCONNECT LIQUID TUBE FROM COOLING UNIT
INLET FITTING
HINT: Cap the open fittings immediately to keep moisture
out of the system.
5. REMOVE GROMMETS FROM INLET AND OUTLET
FITTINGS
6. REMOVE GLOVE BOX
7. DISCONNECT CONNECTORS
8. REMOVE COOLING UNIT
Remove three nuts and four bolts.

ON±VEHICLE INSPECTION OF
EXPANSION VALVE
1. CHECK QUANTITY OF REFRIGERANT GAS DURING
REFRIGERATION CYCLE
2. INSTALL MANIFOLD GAUGE SET
(See page AC±23)
3. RUN ENGINE
Run the engine at 2.000 rpm at least 5 minutes.
4. CHECK EXPANSION VALVE
If the expansion valve is clogged,the low pressure reading
will drop to 0 kg/cm2 (0 psi, 0 kPa), otherwise it is OK.

Evaporator
INSPECTION OF EVAPORATOR
1. CHECK EVAPORATOR FINS FOR BLOCKAGE
If the fins are clogged, clean them with compressed air.
NOTICE: Never use water to clean the evaporator.
2. CHECK FITTINGS FOR CRACKS OR SCRATCHES
Repair as necessary.
ASSEMBLY OF COOLING UNIT
INSTALL COMPONENTS ON EVAPORATOR
(a) Connect the expansion valve to the inlet fitting of the
evaporator. Torque the nut.
Torque: 230 kg±cm (16 ft±Ib, 22 N±m)
HINT: Be sure that the 0±ring are positioned on the tube
fitting.
(b) Install the holder to the suction tube with heat sensi-
tizing tube.
(c) Connect the liquid tube to the inlet fitting of the expan-
sion valve. Torque the nut.
Torque: 140 kg±cm (10 ft±Ib, 14 N±m)
(d) Install lower unit case to the evaporator.
(e) Install thermistor to the evaporator.
(f) Install upper unit case.
(g) Install four screws.
(h) Install four clips.
(i) Install wire harness.
(j) Install condenser fan control amplifier.
(k) Install compressor control amplifier.
(I) Connect connectors.
INSTALLATION OF COOLING UNIT
1. INSTALL COOLING UNIT
Install the cooling unit with three nuts and four bolts.
2. CONNECT CONNECTORS
3. INSTALL GLOVE BOX REINFORCEMENT(c) Remove the expansion valve.

Evaporator
INSPECTION OF EVAPORATOR
1. CHECK EVAPORATOR FINS FOR BLOCKAGE
If the fins are clogged, clean them with compressed air.

2. CHECK FITTINGS FOR CRACKS OR SCRATCHES
Repair as necessary.
ASSEMBLY OF COOLING UNIT
INSTALL COMPONENTS ON EVAPORATOR
(a) Connect the expansion valve to the inlet fitting of the
evaporator. Torque the nut.
Torque: 230 kg±cm (16 ft±Ib, 22 N±m)
HINT: Be sure that the 0±ring are positioned on the tube
fitting.
(b) Install the holder to the suction tube with heat sensi-
tizing tube.
(c) Connect the liquid tube to the inlet fitting of the expan-
sion valve. Torque the nut.
Torque: 140 kg±cm (10 ft±Ib, 14 N±m)
(d) Install lower unit case to the evaporator.
(e) Install thermistor to the evaporator.
(f) Install upper unit case.
(g) Install four screws.
(h) Install four clips.
(i) Install wire harness.
(j) Install condenser fan control amplifier.
(k) Install compressor control amplifier.
(I) Connect connectors.
INSTALLATION OF COOLING UNIT
1. INSTALL COOLING UNIT
Install the cooling unit with three nuts and four bolts.
2. CONNECT CONNECTORS

THERMISTOR

REMOVAL AND INSPECTION OF
THERMISTOR
1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE CABLE FROM BATTERY
2. REMOVE GLOVE BOX AND UNDER COVER
3. CHECK THERMISTOR INSTALLED OPERATION
Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance at the con-
nector.
Resistance: 1,500
at 25°C (77°F)
If resistance value is not as speci¿¿ed, replace the
thermistor.
4. REMOVE THERMISTOR
(a) Disconnect the connector.
(b) Remove the screw and thermistor from the cooling
unit.
5. CHECK THERMISTOR OPERATION
(a) Place the thermistor in cold water. While varying the
temperature of the water, measure the resistance at
the connector and at the same time, measure the tem-
perature of the water with a thermometer.
(b) Compare the two readings on the chart.
If the intersection is not between the two lines, replace the
thermistor.
INSTALLATION OF THERMISTOR
1. INSTALL THERMISTOR
(a) Install the thermistor with the screw.
(b) Connect the connector.
2. INSTALL GLOVE BOX AND UNDER COVER

Manual Shifting Test (A140E)
HINT: With this test, it can be determined whether the
trouble lies within the electrical circuit or is a mechani-
cal problem in the transaxle.
1. DISCONNECT ECT ECU CONNECTOR
(a) Remove the glove box.
(b) With the engine OFF, disconnect the ECT connector.
HINT: If the L, 2 and D range gear positions are difficult
to distinguish, perform the following road test.
wWhite driving, shift through the L, 2 and D ranges.
Check that the gear change corresponds to the shift
position.

Check that the shift and gear positions correspond with
the table below.

1. INSPECT VOLTAGE OF ECT ECU CONNECTOR
(a) Remove the glove box and instrument panel.
(b) Turn on the ignition switch.
(e) Measure the voltage at each terminal.

8. REMOVE COMBINATION METER
(a) Remove the four screws.
(b) Remove the speedometer cable, connectors and the
meter.
9. REMOVE NO.2 UNDER COVER

REMOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT BOX
(a) Remove the screw and pull out the chech arm.
(b) Remove the four screws, the connector, and pull out
the box.
12. REMOVE RIGHT LOWER PANEL
(a) (USA)
Using a screwdrier, pry out the No. 2 speaker panel.
HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use. 11. REMOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR
Remove the two screws and the door.

Remove the eight bolts, two nuts and center member.

31. DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE
(a) Remove the glove compartment box.
(b) Disconnect the following connectors:
(1) Three TCCS ECU connectors
(2) Circuit opening relay connector
(3) Cowl wire connector
(4) Instrument panel wire connector
(c) Pull out the engine wire from the cowl panel.
32. REMOVE PS OIL RESERVOIR TANK WITHOUT
DISCONNECTING HOSES
Remove the two bolts. 25. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE
(a) Loosen the bolt, and disconnect the clamp from the bracket.
(b) Remove the two bolts and nuts, and disconnect the front
pipe from the center pipe. Remove the gasket.
(c) Remove the three nuts, front pipe and gasket.

5. INSTALL PS OIL RESERVOIR TANK
Install the two bolts.
6. CONNECT ENGINE WIRE
(a) Push in the engine wire through the cowl panel.
(b) Connect the following connectors.
(1) Three TCCS ECU connectors
(2) Circuit opening relay connector
(3) Cowl wire connector
(4) Instrument panel wire connector
(c) Install the glove compartment box.
7. RAISE VEHICLE
NOTICE: Be sure vehicle is securely supported.
8. INSTALL ENGINE FRONT MOUNTING BRACKET AND
INSULATOR
(a) Install the mounting bracket with the two bolts. Torque the
bolts.
Torque: 790 kg±cm (57 ft±Ib, 77 N±m)
(b) Temporarily install the mounting insulator with the through
bolt and nut.
9. (2WD)
INSTALL ENGINE CENTER MOUNTING BRACKET
AND INSULATOR ASSEMBLY
Install the mounting bracket and insulator assembly with the
two bolts. Torque the bolts.
Torque: 490 kg±cm (35 ft±Ib, 48 N±m)
4. (A/T)
INSTALL ENGINE LH MOUNTING STAY
(2WD)
Install the mounting stay with the bolt and nut. Torque the
bolt and nut.
Torque: 210 kg±cm (15 ft±Ib, 21 N±m)
(4WD)
Install the mounting stay with the two
nuts.
Torque: 210 kg±cm (15 ft±Ib. 21 N±m)

25. DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE FROM CABIN
(a) Remove the under cover.
(b) Remove the glove compartment box.
(c) Disconnect the following connectors:
(1) Three engine & ECT ECU connectors
(2) Circuit opening relay connector
(3) Cowl wire connector
(4) Instrument panel wire connector
(d) Pull out the engine wire from the cowl panel.
26. REMOVE SUSPENSION LOWER CROSSMEMBER
Remove the two bolts, two nuts and crossmember.
28. REMOVE A/C COMPRESSOR WITHOUT
DISCONNECTING HOSES
(a) Disconnect the two connectors.
(b) Remove the four compressor bolts.
HINT: Put aside the compressor, and suspend it to the radia-
tor support with a string.22. (M /T)
REMOVE CLUTCH RELEASE CYLINDER AND TUBE
CLAMP WITHOUT DISCONNECTING TUBE
23. DISCONNECT SPEEDOMETER CABLE
24. DISCONNECT TRANSAXLE CONTROL CABLE(S)
27. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE
(a) Remove the two pipe stay bolts.
(b) Remove the two bolts and nuts, and disconnect the front
pipe from the center pipe. Remove the gasket.
(c) Remove the three nuts, front pipe and gasket.
