Important information about your Toyota
Occupant restraint systems
Toyota encourages you and your family to take the time
to read Section 1−3 of this Owner ’s Manual carefully. In
terms of helping you understand how you can receive
the maximum benefit of the occupant restraint systems
this vehicle provides, Section 1−3 of this Owner’s Manu-
al is the most important section for you and your family
to read.
Section 1−3 describes the function and operation con-
cerning seats, seat belts, SRS airbags and child re-
straint systems of this vehicle and some potential haz-
ards you should be aware of. These systems work to-
gether along with the overall structure of this vehicle in
order to provide occupant restraint in the event of a
crash. The effect of each system is enhanced when it is
used properly and together with other systems. No
single occupant restraint system can, by itself, provide
you or your family with the equal level of restraint which
these systems can provide when used together. That is
why it is important for you and your family to under-
stand the purpose and proper use of each of these
systems and how they relate to each other.
The purpose of all occupant restraint systems is to help
reduce the possibility of death or serious injury in the
event of a collision. None of these systems, either indi-
vidually or together, can ensure that there is no injury in
the event of collision. However, the more you know
about these systems and how to use them properly, the
greater your chances become of surviving an accident
without death or serious injury.
Seat belts provide the primary restraint to all occupants
of the vehicle, and every occupant of the vehicle should
wear seat belts properly at all times. Children should
always be secured in child restraint systems that are
appropriate for their age and size. SRS (Supplemental
Restraint System) airbags are, as their names imply,
designed to work with, and be supplemental to, seat
belts and are not substitutes for them. SRS airbags can
be very effective in reducing the risk of head and chest
injuries by preventing contact of the head and chest with
interior portions of the vehicle.

In order to be effective, the SRS airbags must deploy
with tremendous speed. The rapid deployment of the
SRS airbags makes the SRS airbags themselves poten-
tial sources of serious injury if an occupant is too close
to an airbag, or if an object or some part of his or her
body has been placed between the occupant and the
airbag at the time of deployment. This is just one exam-
ple of how the instructions in Section 1−3 of this Own-
er ’s Manual will help ensure proper use of the occupant
restraint systems, and increase the safety they can pro-
vide to you and your family in the event of an accident.
Toyota recommends you to read the provisions in Sec-
tion 1−3 carefully and refer to them as needed during
your time of ownership of this vehicle.New vehicle warranty

Your responsibility for
maintenance
It is the owner’s responsibility to make sure that the
specified maintenance is performed. Section 6 gives de-
tails of these maintenance requirements. Also included
in Section 6 is general maintenance. For scheduled
maintenance information, please refer to the “Scheduled
Maintenance Guide” or “Owner ’s Manual Supplement”.

2. Remove the discharged transmitter bat-
tery.
NOTICE
Do not bend the terminals.

3. Put a new transmitter battery with posi-
tive (+) side up.
Close the transmitter case securely.
NOTICE
Make sure the positive side and
negative side of the transmitter bat-
tery are faced correctly.
Do not replace the battery with wet
hands. Water may cause unexpected
rust.
Do not touch or move any compo-
nents inside of the transmitter, or
it may interfere with proper opera-
tion.
Be careful not to bend the electrode
of the transmitter battery insertion
and that dust or oils do not adhere
to the transmitter case.
Close the transmitter case securely.
After replacing the battery, check that the
transmitter operates properly. if the trans-
mitter still does not operate properly, con-
tact your Toyota dealer.
If you lose your transmitter, contact your
Toyota dealer as soon as possible to
avoid the possibility of theft, or an acci-
dent. (See “If you lose your wireless re-
mote control transmitter” in Section 4.)

CAUTION
To avoid serious personal injury, you
must do the following.
Before you close the power win-
dows, always make sure there is
nobody around the power windows.
You must also make sure the
heads, hands and other parts of the
bodies of all occupants are kept
completely inside the vehicle. If
someone’s neck, head or hands get
caught in a closing window, it
could result in a serious injury.
When anyone closes the power win-
dows, make sure he or she oper-
ates the windows safely.
When small children are in the ve-
hicle, never let them use the power
window switches without supervi-
sion. Use the window lock switch to
prevent them from making unex-
pected use of the switches.
Be sure to remove the ignition key
or turn the ignition switch to the
“LOCK” position when you leave
your vehicle.
Never leave anyone (particularly a
small child) alone in your vehicle,
especially with the ignition key still
inserted. Otherwise, he/she could
use the power window switches and
get trapped in a window. Unat-
tended person (particularly a small
child) can be involved in a serious
accident.
Trunk lid—
SU12013
To open the trunk lid from the outside,
insert the master key and turn it clock-
wise.
See “Cargo and luggage” on page 161 in
Section 2 for precautions to observe when
loading luggage.
To close the trunk lid, lower it and press
down on it. After closing the trunk lid, try
pulling it up to make sure it is securely
closed.

CAUTION
Be careful not to mix up the proper
match of tab and buckle. Do not
insert tab 1 (light gray) into other
buckle than the one with light gray
buckle release button. (See “Seat
belts” in this Section for proper
matching of the buckles and tabs.)
After inserting the tab, make sure
the tab and buckle are locked.
Do not insert coins, clips, etc. in
the buckle as this may prevent you
from properly latching the tab and
buckle.
Make sure the belt is not twisted or
caught in the seatback and that it
is arranged in the proper position
for ready use.
If the seat belt does not function
normally, immediately contact your
Toyota dealer.
Head restraints

For your safety and comfort, adjust the
head restraint before driving.
To raise: Pull it up.
To lower: Push it down while pressing the
lock release button.
The head restraint is most effective when
it is close to your head. Therefore, using
a cushion on the seatback is not recom-
mended.
CAUTION
Adjust the center of the head re-
straint so that it is closest to the
top of your ears.
After adjusting the head restraint,
make sure it is locked in position.
Do not drive with the head re-
straints removed.

CAUTION
Always make sure the shoulder belt
is positioned across the center of
your shoulder. The belt should be
kept away from your neck, but not
falling off your shoulder. Failure to
do so could reduce the amount of
protection in an accident and cause
serious injures in a collision.

To release the belt, press the buckle
release button and allow the belt to
retract.
If the belt does not retract smoothly, pull
it out and check for kinks or twists. Then
make sure it remains untwisted as it re-
tracts.
CAUTION
Do not separate the buckle with light
gray buckle release button. Otherwise,
the seat belt may not work properly.

REAR CENTER SEAT BELT (WITH
FOLDDOWN SEAT)
The rear center seat belt is a 3−point type
restraint with 2 buckles. Both seat belt
buckles must be correctly located and se-
curely latched for proper operation
Make sure the buckle 1 (with light gray
buckle−release button) is securely latched
for ready use of the center seat belt.
The buckle 1 should be separated when
the rear left seatback is folded down.
Otherwise, the luggage loaded in the en-
larged trunk will damage the webbing of
the rear center seat belt. (See “Fold−down
rear seat” in this Section for the instruc-
tion of how to correctly connect the seat
belt.)
