Scrapping your Toyota
The SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner devices in your Toyota contain
explosive chemicals. If the vehicle is scrapped with the airbags and seat belt
pretensioners left as they are, this may cause an accident such as fire. Be
sure to have the systems of the SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner
removed and disposed of by a qualified service shop or by your Toyota
dealer before you scrap your vehicle.
Perchlorate Material
Special handling may apply,

Your vehicle has components that may contain perchlorate. These compo−
nents may include airbag, seat belt pretensioners, and wireless remote con−
trol batteries.
CAUTION
 General precautions while driving
Driving under the influence: Never drive your vehicle when under the influ−
ence of alcohol or drugs that have impaired your ability to operate your vehi−
cle. Alcohol and certain drugs delay reaction time, impair judgment and
reduce coordination, which could lead to
an accident that will hurt or kill you,
your occupants or others.
Defensive driving: Always drive defensively. Anticipate mistakes that other
drivers or pedestrians might make and be ready to avoid accidents.
Driver distraction: Always give your full
attention to driving. Anything that dis−
tracts the driver, such as adjusting controls, talking on a cellular phone or
reading can result in a collision with resulting death or serious injury to you,
your occupants or others.

Offroad driving
When driving your vehicle off−road, please observe the following pre−
cautions to ensure your driving
enjoyment and to help prevent the
closure of areas to off−road vehicles.

Drive your vehicle only in areas where off−road vehicles are permit−
ted to travel.
 Respect private property. Get owner ’s permission before entering
private property.

Do not enter areas that are closed. Honor gates, barriers and signs
that restrict travel.
 Stay on established roads. When conditions are wet, driving tech−
niques should be changed or trav el delayed to prevent damage to
roads.

When driving
Winter driving tips
Carry out the necessary preparations and inspections before driving
the vehicle in winter. Always drive the vehicle in a manner appropri
ate to the prevailing weather conditions.
 Prewinter preparations
 Use fluids that are appropriate to the prevailing outside tem−
peratures.
Engine oil
Engine coolant
Washer fluid
 Have a service technician inspect the level and specific grav−
ity of battery electrolyte.
Have the vehicle fitted with four snow tires or purchase a set
of tire chains for the rear tires.
Ensure that all tires are the same size and brand, and that chains
match the size of the tires.
 Before driving the vehicle
Perform the following according to the driving conditions.

Do not try to forcibly open a window, scrape an outside rear
view mirror surface or move a wiper or outside rear view mir−
ror that is frozen. Pour warm water over the frozen area to
melt the ice. Wipe away the water immediately to prevent it
from freezing.
To ensure proper operation of th e climate control system fan,
remove any snow that has accumulated on the air inlet vents
in front of the windshield.
Remove any ice that has accumulated on the vehicle chassis.

Periodically check for and remo ve any excess ice or snow
that may have accumulated in the wheel well or on the
brakes.

Interior features
 When the battery is disconnected
Stations presets are erased.
Reception sensitivity
Maintaining perfect radio reception at all times is difficult due to the con−
tinually changing position of the antenna, differences in signal strength
and surrounding objects, such as trains, transmitters, etc.
 The radio antenna is mounted on the right−side front fender. The antenna
can be removed from the base by turning it.

XM
® Satellite Radio
An XM
® Satellite Radio is a tuner designed exclusively to receive broadcasts
provided under a separate subscription. Availability is limited to the 48 con−
tiguous states and 10 Canadian provinces.

You will need the radio ID when activating XM

The tuner supports only Audio Services (Music and Talk) and the accom−
panying Text Information of XM
® Satellite Radio.

 Allow inspection and repairs to be performed by a Toyota dealer
 Toyota technicians are well−trained specialists and are kept up to date
with the latest service information. They are well informed about the
operations of all systems on your vehicle.
 Keep a copy of the repair order. It proves that the maintenance that has
been performed is under warranty coverage. If any problem should arise
while your vehicle is under warranty, your Toyota dealer will promptly
take care of it.
CAUTION
 Warning in handling of battery
 Engine exhaust, some of its constituents, and a wide variety of automobile
components contain or emit chemicals known to the State of California to
cause cancer and birth defects and other reproductive harm. Work in a
well ventilated area.
 Oils, fuels and fluids contained in vehicles as well as waste produced by
component wear contain or emit chemicals known to the State of Califor−
nia to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Avoid
exposure and wash any affected area immediately.
 Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead
compounds which are known to cause brain damage. Wash your hands
after handling. (

Emission inspection and maintenance (I/M) programs
Some states have vehicle emissi on inspection programs which
include OBD (On Board Diagnostics) checks. The OBD system moni
tors the operation of th
e emission control system.
 If the malfunction indicator lamp comes on
The OBD system determines that a problem exists somewhere
in the emission control system.
Your vehicle may not pass the I/
M test and may need to be repaired. Contact your Toyota dealer
to service the vehicle.
 Your vehicle may not pass the I/M test:
 When the battery is disconnected or discharged
Readiness codes that are se t during ordinary driving are
erased.
Also, depending on your driving habits, the readiness codes
may not be completely set.

When the fuel tank cap is loose
The malfunction indicator lamp comes on as a temporary mal−
function and your vehicle may not pass the I/M test.

When the malfunction indicator lamp goes off after several
driving trips
The error code in the OBD system will not be cleared unless the
vehicle is driven 40 or more times.
 If your vehicle does not pass the I/M test
Contact your Toyota dealer to prepare the vehicle for re−testing.

 After changing the engine oil (U.S.A. only)
The oil change system should be reset. Perform the following procedures:
Turn the engine switch off with the odometer reading shown.( P.
124)
Turn the engine switch to the ON position while holding down the
trip meter reset button.
Continue to press and hold the button until the odometer displays
000000.
If the system fails to reset, the light will continue flashing.
CAUTION
 Used engine oil
 Used engine oil contains potentially harmful contaminants which may
cause skin disorders such as inflammation or skin cancer, so care should
be taken to avoid prolonged and repeated contact. To remove used engine
oil from your skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water.
 Dispose of used oil and filters only in a safe and acceptable manner. Do
not dispose of used oil and filters in household trash, in sewers or onto the
ground. Call your Toyota dealer, service station or auto parts store for
information concerning recycling or disposal.
 Do not leave used engine oil within the reach of children.
NOTICE
 To prevent serious engine damage
Check the oil level on regular basis.
When replacing the engine oil
Be careful not to spill engine oil on the vehicle components.
Avoid overfilling, as the engine could be damaged.
Check the oil level on the dipstick every time you refill the vehicle.

Be sure the engine oil filler cap is properly tightened.

CAUTION
When replacing wheels
Do not use wheels that are a different size from those recommended in
the Owner ’s Manual, as this may result in loss of handling control.
Never use an inner tube in a leaking wheel which is designed for a
tubeless tire. Doing so may result in an accident, causing death or seri−
ous injury.
NOTICE
Replacing tire pressure warning valves and transmitters
Because tire repair or replacement may affect the tire pressure warn−
ing valves and transmitters, make su re to have tires serviced by your
Toyota dealer or other qualified service shop. In addition, make sure to
purchase your tire pressure warning valves and transmitters at your
Toyota dealer.
Ensure that only Genuine Toyota wheels are used on your vehicle.
Tire pressure warning valves and transmitters may not work properly
with non−genuine wheels.
