THE NEW WORLD OF
ANTI-THEFT TECHNOLOGY
ThisToyota vehicle maybeequipped with
an electronic “immobilizer” anti-theft
system. Whenthekey isinserted intothe
ignition switchittransmits anelectronic
code toan immobilizer computer.The
engine willonly start ifthe code inthe key
matches thecode inthe immobilizer. Ifthe
code doesnotmatch, theimmobilizer
disables theignition andfuelsystems.
While anexact physical copyofthe key
will open thedoor andallow retrieval of
items locked inthe vehicle, itwon’t start
the vehicle unlessthekey has thesame
code asthe immobilizer.
SECURITY
For security purposes, accesstokey
codes andservice procedures for
electronically registeringreplacement keys
is restricted. OnlyaToyota dealeror
certain bonded/registered independent
locksmiths cangenerate replacement keys.

REPLACING THEKEY
Upon purchase, eachvehicle shouldhave
two master keysandanaluminum tag

To generate afully functional replacement
key (one thatwillboth open thedoors and
start theengine), oneofthe master keys
is required. Tomake akey that willopen
the door forretrieval ofitems locked
inside thevehicle, thealuminum key-code
tag can beused. Ifamaster keyorthe
aluminum key-codetagisnot available, a
Toyota dealerorcertain registered
locksmiths canobtain thekey code from a
restricted-access database.These
businesses canalso access aservice

KEEPING THEKEY SAFE
Replacing animmobilizer keymay be
costly. Itis advisable tokeep aspare

tag inasafe place. Ifyou record the
key-code inmore thanoneplace, donot
record itin away thatcanbeeasily
identified andassociated withthevehicle.
It is wise tokeep acopy ofthe key-code
outside ofthe vehicle.
If the vehicle wasdelivered withlessthan
two keys andthealuminum key-codetag,
consider havingtheToyota dealerora
qualified independent automotive
locksmith makeaduplicate keybefore you
need it.
