Engine immobilizer system
Vehicles without smart entry &
start system:
The indicator light flashes after
the key has been removed from
the engine switch to indicate that
the system is operating.
The indicator light stops flashing
after the registered key has been
inserted into the engine switch to
indicate that the system has been
canceled.
The vehicle’s keys have built-in transponder chips that prevent
the engine from starting if a key has not been previously regis-
tered in the vehicle’s on-board computer.
Never leave the keys inside the vehicle when you leave the vehi-
cle.
This system is designed to help prevent vehicle theft but does not
guarantee absolute security against all vehicle thefts.

Vehicles with smart entry & start system:
The indicator light flashes after the engine switch has been turned off
to indicate that the system is operating.
The indicator light stops flashing after the engine switch has been
turned to ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode to indicate that the
system has been canceled.
Q System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type engine immobilizer system.
Q Conditions that may cause the system to malfunction
O If the grip portion of the key is in contact with a metallic object
O If the key is in close proximity to or touching a key to the security system
(key with a built-in transponder chip) of another vehicle
NOTICE
Q To ensure the system operates correctly
Do not modify or remove the system. If modified or removed, the proper
operation of the system cannot be guaranteed.

Q Conditions affecting operation
The smart entry & start system uses weak radio waves. In the following situa-
tions, the communication between the electronic key and the vehicle may be
affected, preventing the smart entry & start system, wireless remote control
and engine immobilizer system from operating properly.
(Ways of coping: P. 600)
O When the electronic key battery is depleted
O Near a TV tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio station, large dis-
play, airport or other facility that generates strong radio waves or electrical
noise
O When carrying a portable radio, cellular phone, cordless phone or other
wireless communication device
O When the electronic key is in contact with, or is covered by the following
metallic objects
• Cards to which aluminum foil is attached
• Cigarette boxes that have aluminum foil inside
• Metallic wallets or bags
• Coins
• Hand warmers made of metal
• Media such as CDs and DVDs
O When multiple electronic keys are in the vicinity
O When other wireless keys (that emit radio waves) are being used nearby
O When carrying the electronic key together with the following devices that
emit radio waves
• Another vehicle’s electronic key or a wireless key that emits radio waves
• Personal computers or pers onal digital assistants (PDAs)
• Digital audio players
• Portable game systems
O If window tint with a metallic content or metallic objects are attached to the
rear window
O When the electronic key is placed near a battery charger or electronic devices

“LOCK”
The steering wheel is locked and
the key can be removed. (Vehicles
with automatic transmission: The
key can be removed only when the
shift lever is in P.)
“ACC”
Some electrical components such
as the audio system can be used.
“ON”
All electrical components can be used.
“START”
For starting the engine.
Q Turning the key from “ACC” to “LOCK”
Shift the shift lever to P (automatic transmission) or N (manual transmis-
sion). ( P. 231, 239)
Q If the engine does not start
The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( P. 115)
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer.

QNote for the electronic key
Carry the electronic key on your person, for example in your pocket.
The smart entry & start system does not operate properly if the electronic key
is on the floor or the instrument panel, or in the door pockets, cup holders or
auxiliary boxes.
Q Auto power off function
Vehicles with automatic transmission
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or IGNI-
TION ON mode (the engine is not running) for more than an hour with the
shift lever in P, the engine switch will automatically turn off. However, this
function cannot entirely prevent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle
with the engine switch in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for long peri-
ods of time when the engine is not running.
Vehicles with manual transmission
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or IGNI-
TION ON mode (the engine is not running) for more than an hour, the engine
switch will automatically turn off. However, this function cannot entirely pre-
vent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle with the engine switch in
ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for long periods of time when the
engine is not running.
Q Operation of the engine switch
If the switch is not pressed shortly and firmly, the engine switch mode may
not change or the engine may not start.

If the engine will not star t
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
O There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Gasoline engine: Refuel the vehicle.
Diesel engine: P. 6 1 4
O The engine may be flooded. (gasoline engine)
Try to restart the engine again following correct starting procedures.
( P. 220, 223)
O There may be a malfunction in the engine immobilizer system.
( P. 1 1 5 )
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
O The battery may be discharged. (P. 604)
O The battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.
The engine starting system may be malfunctioning due to an electrical
problem such as an open circuit or a blown fuse. However, an interim
measure is available to start the engine. ( P. 599)
If the engine will not start even though correct starting proce-
dures are being followed ( P. 220, 223), consider each of the
following points:
The engine will not start even though the starter motor operates
normally.
The starter motor turns over slowly, the interior lights and head-
lights are dim, or the horn does not sound or sounds at a low
volume.
The starter motor does not turn over (vehicles with smart entry &
start system).
