When driving
NOTICE
■
To prevent battery discharge
Do not leave the key in the ACC or ON position for long periods if the engine
is not running.
■ When starting the engine
●Do not crank for more than 30 seconds at a time. This may overheat the
starter and wiring systems.
● Do not race a cold engine.
● If the engine becomes difficult to start or stalls frequently, have the engine
checked immediately.

■Caring for leather areas
Scion recommends cleaning the interior of the vehicle at least twice a year to
maintain the quality of the vehicle’s interior.
■ Shampooing the carpets
There are several commercial foaming-type cleaners available. Use a
sponge or brush to apply the foam. Rub in overlapping circles. Do not apply
water. Excellent results are obtained when keeping the carpet as dry as pos-
sible.
■ Seat belts
Clean with mild soap and lukewarm water using a cloth or sponge. Also
check the belts periodically for excessive wear, fraying or cuts.
CAUTION
■Water in the vehicle
●Do not splash or spill liquid in the vehicle. Doing so may cause the electri-
cal components etc. to malfunction or catch fire.
● Do not get any of the SRS components or wiring in the vehicle interior wet.

Electrical malfunction may cause the airbags to deploy or not function
properly, resulting in death or severe injury.
■ Cleaning the interior (esp ecially instrument panel)
Do not use polish wax or polish cleaner. The instrument panel may reflect off
the windshield, obstructing the driver’s view and leading to an accident,
resulting in death or serious injury.

■ After a fuse is replaced
●If the lights do not turn on even after the fuse has been replaced, a bulb
may need replacement. ( P. 255)
● If the replaced fuse blows again, have the vehicle inspected by your
Scion dealer.
■ If there is an overload in the circuits
The fuses are designed to blow, protecting the wiring harness from damage.

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency
*3: Front passenger’s seat belt reminder:
The front passenger’s seat belt reminder sounds to alert the front passenger
that his or her seat belt is not fastened. The buzzer sounds intermittently for
approximately 10 seconds after the vehicle has reached a speed of at least
12 mph (20 km/h). Then, if the seat belt is still unfastened, the buzzer will
sound in a different tone for approximately 20 more seconds.

■ SRS warning light
This warning light system monitors the airbag sensor assembly, front airbag
sensors, side and curtain shield airbag sensors, curtain shield airbag sen-
sors, rear airbag sensors, driver’s seat position sensor, driver’s seat belt
buckle switch, front passenger occupant classification system (ECU and
sensors), AIR BAG ON indicator light, AIR BAG OFF indicator light, front
passenger’s seat belt buckle switch, seat belt pretensioner assemblies, air-
bags, interconnecting wiring and power sources. ( P. 279)
■ Key reminder buzzer
The buzzer indicates that the key has not been removed with the engine
switch in the ACC or LOCK position and the driver’s door opened.
■ Electric power steering system warning light
When the battery charge becomes insufficient or the voltage temporarily
drops, the electric power steering system warning light may comes on.
■ If the malfunction indicator lamp comes on while driving
First check the following:
● Is the fuel tank empty?
If it is, fill the fuel tank immediately.
● Is the fuel tank cap loose?
If it is, tighten it securely.
The malfunction indicator lamp will go off after taking several driving trips.
If the malfunction indicator lamp does not go off even after several trips, con-
tact your Scion dealer as soon as possible.
