98 1−6. Theft deterrent system
nItems to check before locking the vehicle
To prevent unexpected triggering of the alarm and vehicle theft, make sure
of the following.
lNobody is in the vehicle.
lThe windows and moon roof are closed before the alarm is set.
lNo valuables or other personal items are left in the vehicle.
nTriggering of the alarm
The alarm may be triggered in the following situations.
(Stopping the alarm deactivates the alarm system.)
lA person inside the vehicle opens a door or hood.
lThe battery is recharged or replaced when the vehicle is locked.

Panic mode
nDeactivating or stopping the alarm
Do one of the following to deactivate or stop the alarm.
lUnlock the doors using the smar t key system or the wireless
remote control.
lStart the engine. (The alarm will be deactivated or stopped after
a few seconds.)
When is pressed for longer than
about one second, the headlights/tail
lights/emergency flashers will flash, the
front and rear interior lights will come on,
and an alarm will sound for about 60 sec−
onds to deter any person from trying to
break into or damage your vehicle.
To stop the alarm, press any button on
the wireless remote control.

CAUTION
nWhen starting the vehicle
Always keep your foot on the brake pedal while stopped with the engine run−
ning. This prevents the vehicle from creeping.
nWhen driving the vehicle
lDo not drive if you are unfamiliar with the location of the brake and accel−
erator pedals to avoid depressing the wrong pedal.
Accidentally depressing the accelerator pedal instead of the brake
pedal will result in sudden acceleration that may lead to an accident
that could result in death or serious injury.
When backing up, you may twist your body around, leading to a diffi−
culty in operating the pedals. Make sure to operate the pedals properly.
Make sure to keep a correct driving posture even when moving the
vehicle only slightly, allowing you to depress the brake and accelerator
pedals properly.
Depress the brake pedal using your right foot. Depressing the brake
pedal using your left foot may delay response in an emergency, result−
ing in an accident.
lDo not drive the vehicle over or stop the vehicle near flammable materials.
The exhaust system and exhaust gases can be extremely hot. This may
cause a fire if there is any flammable material nearby.
lDo not let the vehicle roll backwards while the shift lever is in a driving
position, or roll forward while the shift lever is in “R”.
Doing so may cause the engine to stall and lead to poor steering perfor−
mance, resulting in an accident or damage to the vehicle.

If the smell of exhaust is noticed inside the vehicle, open the windows and
check that the back door is closed.
Large amounts of exhaust in the vehicle can cause driver drowsiness and
an accident, resulting in death or a serious health hazard. Have the cause
of the problem inspected immediately.

CAUTION
nWhen driving on slippery road surfaces
lSudden braking, acceleration and steering may cause tire slippage and
reduce your ability to control the vehicle, resulting in an accident.
lSudden changes in engine speed, such as engine braking caused by up−
shifting or down−shifting, may cause the vehicle to skid, resulting in an
accident.
lAfter driving through a puddle, lightly depress the brake pedal to make
sure that the brakes are functioning properly. Wet brake pads may prevent
the brakes from functioning properly. If the brakes on only one side are wet
and not functioning properly, steering control may be affected, resulting in
an accident.
nWhen shifting the shift lever
Be careful not to shift the shift lever with the accelerator pedal depressed.
This may lead to unexpected rapid acceleration of the vehicle that may
cause an accident and result in death or serious injury.
nWhen the vehicle is stopped
lDo not race the engine.
If the vehicle is in any gear other than “P” or “N”, the vehicle may acceler−
ate suddenly and unexpectedly, and may cause an accident.
lDo not leave the vehicle with the engine running for a long time.
If such a situation cannot be avoided, park the vehicle in an open space
and check that exhaust fumes do not enter the vehicle interior.

Always keep a foot on the brake pedal while the engine is running to pre−
vent an accident caused by the vehicle moving.

CAUTION
nWhen the vehicle is parked
lDo not leave glasses, cigarette lighters, spray cans, or soft drink cans in
the vehicle when it is in the sun.
Failure to do so may result in the following:
Gas may leak from a cigarette lighter or spray can, and may lead to a
fire.
The temperature inside the vehicle may cause the plastic lenses and
plastic material of eye glasses to deform or crack.
Soft drink cans may fracture, causing the contents to spray over the
interior of the vehicle, and may also cause a short circuit in the vehi−
cle’s electrical components.
lAlways apply the parking brake, shift the shift lever to “P”, stop the engine
and lock the vehicle.
Do not leave the vehicle unattended while the engine is running.
lDo not touch the exhaust pipe while the engine is running or immediately
after turning the engine off.
Doing so may cause burns.
lDo not leave the engine running in an area with snow build up, or where it
is snowing. If snowbanks build up around the vehicle while the engine is
running, exhaust gases may collect and enter the vehicle. This may lead
to death or a serious health hazard.
nExhaust gases
Exhaust gases include harmful carbon monoxide (CO) that is colorless and
odorless. Inhaling exhaust gases may lead to death or a serious health haz−
ard.
lIf the vehicle is in a poorly ventilated area, stop the engine. In a closed
area, such as a garage, exhaust gases may collect and enter the vehicle.
This may lead to death or a serious health hazard.
l
The exhaust system should be checked occasionally. If there is a hole or
crack caused by corrosion, damage to a joint or abnormal exhaust noise,
make sure to have the vehicle inspected and repaired by your Toyota
dealer. Failure to do so may allow exhaust gases to enter the vehicle,
resulting in death or a serious health hazard.

CAUTION
nIf a safety system warning light does not come on
Should a safety system light such as Multi Terrain ABS and the SRS airbag
warning lights not come on when you start the engine, this could mean that
these systems are not available to help protect you in an accident, which
could result in death or serious injury. Have the vehicle inspected by your
Toyota dealer immediately if this occurs.
nWarning lights
Warning lights inform the driver
of malfunctions in the indicated
vehicle’s systems. ( P. 449)
*: These lights turn on when the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is turned
to IGNITION ON mode to indicate that a system check is being per−
formed. They will turn off after the engine is started, or after a few sec−
onds. There may be a malfunction in a system if the lights do not come
on, or if the lights do not turn off. Have the vehicle inspected by your
Toyota dealer.

When driving
nSystem check display
After switching the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to IGNITION ON mode,
“LAND CRUISER” is displayed while system operation is checked. When the
system check is complete, the normal screen will return.
nTire inflation pressure
Tire inflation pressure changes with temperature. The displayed values may
also be different from the values measured using other gauges.
nLiquid crystal display
Small spots or light spots may appear on the display. This phenomenon is
characteristic of liquid crystal displays, and there is no problem to continue
using the display.
NOTICE
nThe multiinformation display at low temperatures
Allow the interior of the vehicle to warm up before using the liquid crystal
information display. At extremely low temperatures, the information display
monitor may respond slowly, and display changes may be delayed.

nThe windshield wiper and washer can be operated when

n“INT” mode
nIf no windshield washer fluid sprays
Check that the washer nozzles are not blocked if there is washer fluid in the
windshield washer fluid reservoir.
nIn extremely hot or cold weather
The system will turn off if the windshield gets extremely hot (at more than
176 F [80 C]) or cold (at less than −14 F [−10 C]).
nWindshield wiper features
The rear window and outside rear view mirror defoggers automatically turn
on when you operate the wipers.
nCustomization
Settings (e.g. drip prevention function) can be changed. (

nBefore towing
Check that the following conditions are met:
lThe vehicle’s tires are properly inflated.
lTrailer tires are inflated according to the trailer manufacturer ’s recom−
mendation.
lAll trailer lights work.
lAll lights work each time you connect them.
lThe trailer ball is set up at the proper height for the coupler on the trailer.
lThe vehicle remains level when a loaded or unloaded trailer is hitched.
Do not drive if the vehicle is not level, and check for improper tongue
load, overloading, worn suspension, or other possible causes.
lThe trailer cargo is securely loaded.
lThe rear view mirrors conform to all applicable federal, state/provincial or
local regulations. If they do not, install rear view mirrors appropriate for
towing purposes.
nBreakin schedule
Toyota recommends that you do not use a new vehicle or a vehicle with any
new power train components (engine, transmission, differential, wheel bear−
ings, etc.) to tow a trailer for the first 500 miles (800 km) of driving.
nMaintenance
lIf you tow a trailer, your vehicle will require more frequent maintenance
due to the additional load. (See “Scheduled Maintenance Guide” or
“Owner ’s Manual Supplement”.)
lRetighten the fixing bolts of the towing ball after approximately 600 miles
(1000 km) of trailer towing.
