To open the trunk lid from the outside, insert the master key and turn it clock- wise. See ºLuggage stowage precautionsº in
Part 2 for precautions to observe in load- ing luggage.
To close the trunk lid, lower it and press
down on it. After closing the trunk lid, try
pulling it up to make sure it is securely closed.
CAUTION!
Keep the trunk lid closed while driv-
ing. This not only keeps the luggage
from being thrown out but also pre-vents exhaust gases from entering
the vehicle.
To open the trunk lid from the driver's
seat, pull up on the lock release lever.

This system deactivates the lock re-
lease lever so that things locked in the
trunk can be protected.
1. Push down the security lock levers
to lock the rear seatbacks.
After locking the rear seatbacks, try fold-
ing them down to make sure they are se- curely locked-otherwise someone couldget into the trunk by folding down a rear seat.2. After closing the trunk lid, insert the master key and turn it counter-
clockwise to deactivate the lock re-
lease lever.
After closing the trunk lid, try pulling it up to make sure it is securely closed.To open the hood, do the following.
1. Pull the hood lock release lever. The hood will spring up slightly.
Before driving, be sure that the hood
is securely locked. Otherwise, the
hood may open unexpectedly and an
accident may occur.

2. In front of the vehicle, pull up on theauxiliary catch lever and lift the hood.3. Hold the hood open by insertingthe support rod into the slot.
Before closing the hood, check to see that
you have not forgotten any tools, rags,
etc. and return the support rod to its clip-
this prevents rattles. Then lower the hood
and make sure it locks into place. If neces-
sary, press down gently on the front edge
to lock it.
CAUTION!
After inserting the support rod into
the slot, make sure the rod supports
the hood securely.
To deter the vehicle theft, the system is
designed to give an alarm and keep the
engine from being started if any of the
doors, trunk or hood is forcibly un-
locked or the battery terminal is dis-
connected and then reconnected
when the vehicle is locked.
The alarm blows the horn intermittently
and flashes the headlights, tail lights, andother exterior lights. The engine cannot
be started because the starter circuit will be cut.

2. To remove the fuel tank cap, turnthe cap slowly counterclockwise,
then pause slightly before remov-
ing it. After removing the cap, hang
it on the cap hanger.
It is not unusual to hear a slight swoosh
when the cap is opened. When installing,
turn the cap clockwise till you hear a click.
If the cap is not tightened securely, themalfunction indicator lamp comes on.
Make sure the cap is tightened securely.
The indicator lamp goes off after driving several times. If the indicator lamp does
not go off, contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.
CAUTION!
Make sure the cap is tightened se-
curely to prevent fuel spillage in
case of an accident.
Use only a genuine Toyota fuel tank
cap for replacement. It has a built-
in check valve to reduce fuel tank vacuum.CAUTION!
To avoid serious personal injury, you
must do the following. While the vehicle is moving, always
keep the head, hands and other
parts of the body of all occupants away from the roof opening. Other-
wise, you could be seriously in-
jured if the vehicle stops suddenly
or if the vehicle is involved in an ac- cident.
Never sit on top of the vehicle
around the roof opening.
Never attempt to remove the moon
roof panel while driving. Other-
wise, the panel may become a haz-ard by falling into or flying off the vehicle.
After installing the moon roof pan-
el, make sure they are firmly se-
cured by pushing up on the under-
side of the panel.
Never put your hands between the
moon roof panel and the surround-
ing roof.

To tilt up the moon roof, first pull down
on the handle while pushing in one of
the lock buttons. Then push up the
moon roof until it locks. After tilting up the moon roof, make sure the handle is securely in place.
When closing the moon roof, slowly pull
down the handle while supporting the roof
with your hand. Close and lock the moon
roof by pushing the handle. Be sure to use
your palm to push the handle. After clos-
ing the moon roof, make sure it is securely locked.1. Pull the handle down while push-
ing in one of the lock buttons.2. Push in the retaining springs armsas shown and push up the moon roof.

the handle securely.2. Place the moon roof with sunshade on the stowage bag.
When placing them, be sure the interior
side of the moon roof facing downward.

3. Fold the stowage bag in half andzip. Put the stowage belt through
the retaining clip.
4. Put the stowage bag in the trunkroom. Then attach the hooks to the
stowage anchor.
When putting the stowage bag in the trunk
room, be sure the side attached the cau- tion label facing upward.
CAUTION!
Be sure to place the moon roof cor-
rectly. Placing incorrectly may cause a damage and possibly per-
sonal injury.
Make sure both hooks are securely
attached to the stowage anchor.
NOTICE
Be sure that the luggages in the
trunk room do not hit on the
stowed moon roof.
To avoid damaging the moon roof,do not press on the center of the
stowed moon roof and do not
place anything heavy on thestowed moon roof.

2. Raise the convertible top from out-side of the vehicle by holding its
front side securely.
CAUTION!
To prevent personal injury, do not
grasp the convertible top side rails.
INSTALLING THE TOP BOOT
The top boot is used to cover and conceal
the completely lowered convertible top. Itis in the trunk.
3. Secure the top boot snaps to the ones on the quarter trim.4. Open the trunk and fix the top bootwith right and left buttons and fas-
tener tapes, then close the trunk af-
ter fixing the top boot.

3. Open the trunk and release the leftand right buttons and fastener
tape, then close the trunk.
Store it in the trunk.4. Raise the convertible top from out- side of the vehicle by holding its
front side securely and move it to
the top of the front window glassframe.
CAUTION!
To prevent personal injury, do not
grasp the convertible top side rails.
5. Move into the front seat, grasp the handle which is under the convert-
ible top and pull the top fully for-ward.

6. While holding the convertible topagainst the windshield frame, push
latch handles fully forward till they are hooked.
Visually check that the latch handles are
fully seated in the strikers. Also, pull on
the convertible tip side rails to make surethe top is securely hooked.
7. Raise both the side windows and sun visors.
