Immobilizer system
The vehicle’s keys have built-in transponder chips that prevent the
hybrid system from starting if the key has not been previously regis-
tered in the vehicle’s on-board computer.
Never leave the keys inside the vehicle when you leave the vehicle.
Vehicle with smart key sys-
tem:
The indicator light flashes after
the “POWER” switch has been
turned OFF to indicate that the
system is operating.
Vehicles without smart key
system:
The indicator light flashes after
the key has been removed
from the “POWER” switch to
indicate that the system is

■System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type of immobilizer system.
■ Conditions that may cause the system to malfunction
● If the grip portion of the key is in contact with a metallic object.
● If the key is in close proximity to or touching a key to the security system
(key with a built-in transponder chip) of another vehicle.
■ Certifications for the hybr id system immobilizer system
For vehicles sold in the U.S.A.

For proper system operation
Do not modify, remove or disable the hybrid vehicle immobilizer system. If
any unauthorized changes or modifications are made, the proper operation
of the system cannot be guaranteed.

■If the hybrid system does not start
The hybrid system immobilizer system may not have been deactivated.

■ If the “READY” light does not come on
If the “READY” light does not come on when you press the power switch with
the shift lever in “P” and the brake pedal pressed, contact your Toyota dealer
immediately.
■ When the “POWER” switch in dicator flashes in amber
The system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toy-
ota dealer immediately.
■ Auto power OFF function
The “POWER” switch will automatically turn OFF when left in ACCESSORY
mode for 1 hour or more.
■ Electronic key battery depletion

■ Leak detection pump
Several hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear a sound coming
from underneath the luggage compartment for several minutes.
This is normal operation and does not indicate a malfunction.

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency

If the hybrid system will not start
If the engine will not start even though correct starting procedures
are being followed (
P. 130), consider each of the following points.
■ The hybrid system will not start even when the starter motor
operates normally.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
●The electronic key battery may be discharged. ( P. 450)
● The engine may be flooded.
Try to restart the hybrid system once more following correct
starting procedures. (P. 130)
● There may be a malfunction in the immobilizer system.
( P. 8 1 )
■ The interior lights and headlight s are dim, or the horn does
not sound or sounds at a low volume
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
● The 12 volt battery may be discharged. ( P. 451)
● The 12 volt battery terminal c onnections may be loose or cor-
roded.
■ The interior lights and headlights do not turn on, or the horn
does not sound
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
●One or both of the 12 volt battery terminals may be discon-
nected.
● The 12 volt battery may be discharged. ( P. 451)
Contact your Toyota dealer if the problem cannot be repaired,
or if repair procedures are unknown.
