● The Rear Cross Traff ic Alert function
Assists the driver when backing up
These functions use same sensors.
Outside rear view mirror indicators

When a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, the outside rear view mirror
indicator comes on while the turn signal lever is not operated. If the turn
signal lever is operated toward the detected side, the outside rear view
mirror indicator flashes.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert function:
When a vehicle approaching from the right or left rear of the vehicle is
detected, the outside rear view mirror indicators flash.

If a vehicle approaching from the right or left at the rear of the vehicle is
detected, the RCTA detection screen will be shown on the multi- informa-
tion display.
The Blind Spot Monitor function and Rear Cross Traffic Alert function
can be enabled/disabled on the screen ( P. 151) of the multi-

■The BSM outside rear view mi rror indicators visibility
When under strong sunlight, the outside rear view mirror indica tor may be dif-
ficult to see.
■ The Rear Cross Traffic Alert buzzer hearing
The Rear Cross Traffic Alert buzzer may be difficult to hear ov er loud noises
such as high audio volume.
■ When “Blind Spot Monitor Unavailable” is shown on the multi-inf orma-
tion display
The sensor voltage has become abnormal, water, snow mud, etc., may be
built up in the vicinity of the sensor area of bumper ( P. 353). Removing the
water, snow, mud, etc., from the vicinity of the sensor area bu mper should
return it to normal. Also, the sensor may not function normally when used in
extremely hot or cold weather.
■ When “Blind Spot Monitor System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer” is
shown on the multi-information display
There may be a sensor malfunction or misaligned. Have the vehicle
inspected by your Toyota dealer.
■ Customization
The brightness of the outside rear view mirror indicators can b e changed.

Driving
■The Blind Spot Monitor function is operational when
●The BSM system is set to on ( P. 151)
● Vehicle speed is greater than approximately 10 mph (16 km/h)
■ The Blind Spot Monitor functio n will detect a vehicle when
● A vehicle in an adjacent lane overtakes your vehicle.
● You overtake a vehicle in adjacent lane slowly.
● Another vehicle enters the detection area when it changes lanes.
■ Conditions under which the Blin d Spot Monitor function will not detect a
vehicle
The Blind Spot Monitor function is not designed to detect the f ollowing types
of vehicles and/or objects:
● Small motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians etc.
*
●Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction
● Guardrails, walls, signs, parked vehicles and similar stationar y objects
*
●Following vehicles that are in the same lane*
●Vehicles driving 2 lanes across from your vehicle*
●Vehicles which are being overtaken rapidly by your vehicle*
*
: Depending on conditions, detection of a vehicle and/or object may occur.
WARNING
■Cautions regarding the use of the system
The driver is solely responsible for safe driving. Always drive safely, taking
care to observe your surroundings.
The Blind Spot Monitor function is a supplementary function whi ch alerts the
driver that a vehicle is present in the blind spot. Do not over ly rely on the
Blind Spot Monitor function. The function cannot judge if it is safe to change
lanes, therefore over reliance could cause an accident resultin g in death or
serious injury.
According to conditions, the system may not function correctly. Therefore
the driver’s own visual confirmation of safety is necessary.

4-5. Using the driving support systems
The areas that vehicles can be detected in are outlined below.
To give the driver a more consistent time to react, the buzzer can alert
for faster vehicles from farther away.
Example:
■ The Rear Cross Traffic Alert f unction is operational when
● The BSM system is set to on. ( P. 151)
● The shift position is in R.
● Vehicle speed is less than approximately 5 mph (8 km/h).
● Approaching vehicle speed is between approximately 5 mph (8 km/ h) and
18 mph (28 km/h).

WARNING
■When using the compact spare tire (if equipped)
●Remember that the spare tire provided is specifically designed for use
with your vehicle. Do not use yo ur spare tire on another vehicle.
●Do not use more than one compact spare tire simultaneously.
●Replace the spare tire with a st andard tire as soon as possible .
●Avoid sudden acceleration, abrupt steering, sudden braking and shift-
ing operations that cause sudden engine braking.
■When the compact spare tire is attached (if equipped)
The vehicle speed may not be co rrectly detected, and the following sys-
tems may not operate correctly:
Also, not only can the following system not be utilized fully, but it may
even negatively affect the drive-train components:
• E-Four (Electric Four wheel drive system)
*
*
: If equipped
■Speed limit when using the co mpact spare tire (if equipped)
Do not drive at speeds in excess of 50 mph (80 km/h) when a com pact
spare tire is installed on the vehicle.
The compact spare tire is not designed for driving at high spee ds. Fail-
ure to observe this precaution ma y lead to an accident causing death or
serious injury.
■After using the tools and jack
Before driving, make sure all t he tools and jack are securely i n place in
their storage locatio n to reduce the possibility of personal in jury during a
