System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type alarm system.
Items to check before locking the vehicle
To prevent unexpected triggering of the alarm and vehicle theft, make sure
of the following:
Nobody is in the vehicle.
The windows is closed before the alarm is set.
No valuables or other personal items are left in the vehicle.
Triggering of the alarm
The alarm may be triggered in the following situations.
(Stopping the alarm deactivates the alarm system.)
The doors are unlocked using the
mechanical key.
A person inside the vehicle opens a
door, the back door or hood.
The 12-volt battery is recharged or
replaced when the vehicle is locked.

Alarm-operated door lock
When the alarm is operating, the doors are locked automatically to pre-
vent intruders.
Do not leave the key inside the vehicle when the alarm is operating, and
make sure the key is not inside the vehicle when recharging or replacing
the 12-volt battery.
Canceling and automatic re-enabling of the intrusion sensor
The alarm will still be set even when the intrusion sensor is canceled.
After the intrusion sensor is canceled, pressing the “POWER” switch or
unlocking the doors using the entry function or wireless remote control
will re-enable the intrusion sensor.
When the alarm system is set again, the intrusion sensor will be set.
Intrusion sensor considerations
The sensor may trigger the alarm in the following situations:
Persons or pets are in the vehicle.
A window is open.
In this case, the sensor may detect the
following:
• Wind or the movement of objects
such as leaves and insects inside
the vehicle
• Ultrasonic waves emitted from
devices such as the intrusion sen-
sors of other vehicles
• The movement of people outside
the vehicle

Driving the vehicle
The following procedures should be observed to ensure safe driv-
ing:
Starting the hybrid system

Driving
With the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift position to D.
(P. 224)
Check that the shift position indicator shows D. (P. 236)
Release the parking brake. (P. 234)
Gradually release the brake pedal and gently depress the
accelerator pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
Stopping
With the shift position in D, depress the brake pedal.
If necessary, set the parking brake.
When the vehicle will be stopped for an extended period of time,
shift the shift position to P. (P. 227)
Parking the vehicle
Stop the vehicle completely.
Set the parking brake. (P. 234)
Shift the shift position to P. (P. 227)
Check that the shift position indicator shows P. (P. 224)
Press the “POWER” switch to stop the hybrid system.
Slowly release the brake pedal.
Lock the door, making sure that you have the electronic key
on your person.
When parking on a hill, block the wheels as needed.

When the P position control system malfunctions
The “POWER” switch will not be able to be turned off. In such a case, the
switch can be turned off after applying the parking brake.
Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional immediately.
Meter display
When the “POWER” switch is turned off, each display will extinguish as fol-
lows.
The shift position indicator will extinguish after approximately 2 seconds.
The odometer, clock, etc. will extinguish after approximately 30 seconds.
(Each display will also extinguish immediately if a door is locked before 30
seconds has elapsed)
CAUTION
When starting the hybrid system
Always start the hybrid system while sitting in the driver’s seat. Do not
depress the accelerator pedal while starting the hybrid system under any cir-
cumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
Stopping the hybrid system in an emergency
If you want to stop the hybrid system in an emergency while driving the vehi-
cle, press and hold the “POWER” switch for more than 3 seconds, or press it
briefly 3 times or more in succession.
However, do not touch the “POWER” switch while driving except in an emer-
gency. Turning the hybrid system off while driving will not cause loss of
steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.
This will make it more difficult to steer and brake, so you should pull over
and stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.

Headlight control sensor (if equipped)
Automatic light off system
When the light switch is in the
, , or position: The
headlights turn off automatically if the “POWER” switch is turned to
ACCESSORY mode or OFF.
When the light switch is in the AUTO position: The headlights and all
lights turn off automatically if the “POWER” switch is turned to ACCES-
SORY mode or OFF and the driver’s door is opened.
To turn the lights on again, turn the “POWER” switch to ON mode, or turn the
light switch off once and then back to the
, , or posi-
tion.
The sensor may not function properly if
an object is placed on the sensor, or any-
thing that blocks the sensor is affixed to
the windshield.
Doing so interferes with the sensor
detecting the level of ambient light and
may cause the automatic headlight sys-
tem to malfunction.
Air conditioning operation may also be
interrupted.

Illuminated entry system
The lights automatically turn on/off according to “POWER” switch mode, the
presence of the electronic key, whether the doors are locked/unlocked, and
whether the doors are opened/closed.
To prevent 12-volt battery discharge
If the interior lights remain on when the door is not fully closed and the inte-
rior light switch (door position on/off) is on, the lights will go off automatically
after 20 minutes.
Customization
Settings (e.g. the time elapsed before the lights turn off) can be changed.

Clock
The clock is displayed when
The “POWER” switch is in ON mode.
After turning the “POWER” switch off
Even after the “POWER” switch has been turned off, the time will continue to
be displayed for approximately 30 seconds or until a door is locked.
When the 12-volt battery is disconnected
The time display will automatically be set to 1:00.

Jam protection function
If an object is detected between a panoramic roof shade and the frame
while closing, travel is stopped and the panoramic roof shades open
slightly.
When the jam protection function has operated, even if the “CLOSE” side
of the switch is pressed again, the shade will not move in the close direc-
tion until the reverse operation has stopped completely.
Depending on the driving conditions and the surroundings, the pan-
oramic roof shades may collide with something and operate in reverse.
Door lock linked automatic close function
When the “POWER” switch is off, the panoramic roof shades will close auto-
matically if the vehicle is locked from the outside or from the inside using the
wireless remote control.
If the panoramic roof shades do not close normally
Perform the following operations.
Stop the vehicle in a safe place.
With the panoramic roof shades stopped, push and hold the
“CLOSE” side of the switch for 10 seconds or more (until the pan-
oramic roof shades have closed completely).
If the panoramic roof shades continue to close but then re-open slightly even
after performing the above procedure correctly, have the vehicle inspected
by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.
Customization
The door lock linked automatic close function can be disabled.

When using a car wash
If the door handle becomes wet while the electronic key is within the effec-
tive range, the door may lock and unlock repeatedly. Place the key in a posi-
tion 2 m (6 ft.) or more separate from the vehicle while the vehicle is being
washed. (Take care to ensure that the key is not stolen.)
Aluminum wheels
Remove any dirt immediately by using a neutral detergent. Do not use
hard brushes or abrasive cleaners. Do not use strong or harsh chemical
cleaners.
Use the same mild detergent and wax as used on the paint.
Do not use detergent on the wheels when they are hot, for example after
driving for long distance in the hot weather.
Wash detergent from the wheels immediately after use.
Bumpers
Do not scrub with abrasive cleaners.
Front side windows water-repellent coating (if equipped)
The following precautions can extend the effectiveness of the water-
repellent coating.
• Remove any dirt etc. from the front side windows regularly.
• Do not allow dirt and dust to accumulate on the windows for a long
period. Clean the windows with a soft and damp cloth as soon as pos-
sible.
• Do not use wax or glass cleaners that contain abrasives when cleaning
the windows.
• Do not use any metallic objects to remove condensation build up.
When the water-repellent performance has become insufficient, the coat-
ing can be repaired. Contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional.
