Maintenance and care
WARNING
■ Replacing light bulbs
●Be sure to stop the hybrid system and turn off the lights. Do not attempt to
replace the bulb immediately after turning off the lights.
The bulbs become very hot and may cause burns.
● Do not touch the glass portion of t he light bulb with bare hands. When it is
unavoidable to hold the glass portion, use and hold with a clean dry cloth
to avoid getting moisture and oils on the bulb.
Also, if the bulb is scratched or dropped, it may blow out or crack.
● Fully install light bulbs and any parts used to secure them. Failure to do so
may result in heat damage, fire, or water entering the headlight unit. This
may damage the headlights or cause condensation to build up on the lens.
● Do not attempt to repair or disassemble light bulbs, connectors, electric
circuits or component parts.
Doing so may result in death or serious injury due to electric shock.
■ To prevent damage or fire
●Make sure bulbs are fully seated and locked.
● Check the wattage of the bulb before installing to prevent heat damage.

Emergency flashers
Press the switch.
All the turn signal lights will flash.
To turn them off, press the switch
once again.
■Emergency flashers
If the emergency flashers are used for a long time while the hybrid system is
not operating (while the “READY” indicato r is not illuminated), the 12-volt bat-
tery may discharge.
The emergency flashers are used to warn other drivers when the
vehicle has to be stopped in the road due to a breakdown, etc.

When trouble arises
If a war ning light tur ns on or a warning
buzzer sounds
Calmly perform the following actions if any of the warning lights
comes on or flashes. If a light comes on or flashes, but then
goes off, this does not necessarily indicate a malfunction in the
system. However, if this continues to occur, have the vehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional.

Brake system warning light and warning buzzer (red

Indicates that:
• The brake fluid level is low; or
• The brake system is malfunctioning
→ Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and con-
tact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional.
Continuing to drive the vehicle may be dangerous.
This light also comes on when the parking brake is not
released. If the light turns off after the parking brake is fully
released, the system is operating normally.
Brake system warning light (yellow indicator) Indicates a malfunction in:
• The regenerative braking system; or
• The electronically controlled brake system
→ Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional immediately.
Charging system warning light Indicates a malfunction in the vehicle’s charging system
→ Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and con-
tact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional.

Parking lock system warning message (warning buzzer)Indicates a malfunction in the shift control system when
the vehicle is stopped
• In this situation, there is a possibility that the parkinglock mechanism will not work. When parking, park the
vehicle on a flat surface and apply the parking brake
securely.
• The power switch may not be turned off. If this happens,
applying the parking brake will enable the switch to be
turned off.
→ Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional immediately.
(If equipped)
Hybrid battery indicator light The hybrid battery (traction battery) will soon need to be
inspected or replaced
Have the hybrid battery (traction battery) inspected by any
authorized Toyota dealer or re pairer, or another duly quali-
fied and equipped professional immediately.

LED headlight warning light Indicates a malfunction in the LED headlights
The LED headlights will not normally illuminate when
there is a malfunction, however they may be able to illu-
minate depending on the nature of the problem.
→ Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional immediately.

P position request indicator light (warning buzzer)
The amount of charge remaining in the hybrid battery
(traction battery) has fallen because the shift position has
been left in N for a long time
→ Because recharging is not possible when the shift
position is in N, shift the shift position to P when
parking the vehicle for a long time.
• The driver’s door has been opened while the shift posi- tion is in N, D or B
• An attempt has been made to start the hybrid system
while the shift position is in anything other than P
→ Shift the shift position to P.

Driver’s and front passenger’s seat belt reminder light
(warning buzzer)

Warns the driver and/or front passenger to fasten their
seat belts
→ Fasten the seat belt.
If the front passenger’s seat is occupied, the front
passenger’s seat belt also needs to be fastened to
make the warning light (warning buzzer) turn off.
Rear passengers’ seat belt reminder lights (warning
buzzer)

Warns the rear passengers to fasten their seat belts
→ Fasten the seat belt.
(If equipped)
Master warning light
A buzzer sounds and the warning light comes on and
flashes to indicate that the master warning system has
detected a malfunction.

Tire pressure warning light
When the light comes on:
Low tire inflation pressure such as
• Natural causes ( →P. 394)
• Flat tire ( →P. 417, 431)
→ Adjust the tire inflation pressure to the specified
level.
The light will turn off after a few minutes. In case the
light does not turn off even if the tire inflation pres-
sure is adjusted, have the system checked by any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional.
When the light comes on after blinking for 1 minute:
Malfunction in the tire pressure warning system ( →P. 395)
→ Have the system checked by any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.

WARNING
■ If both the ABS and the brake system warning lights remain on
Stop your vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped profes-
sional. The vehicle will become extremely unstable during braking, and the
ABS system may fail, which could cause an accident resulting in death or
serious injury.
■ When the electric power steering system warning light comes on
The steering wheel may become extremely heavy.
When steering wheel operations are heav ier than usually, grip the steering
wheel firmly and operate it using more force than usual.
■ If the tire pressure warning light comes on
Be sure to observe the following precautions. Failure to do so could cause a
loss of vehicle control and result in death or serious injury.
●Stop your vehicle in a safe place as soon as possible. Adjust the tire infla-
tion pressure immediately.
● Vehicles with spare tire: If the tire pressure warning light comes on even
after tire inflation pressure adjustment, it is probable that you have a flat
tire. Check the tires. If a tire is fl at, change it with the spare tire and have
the flat tire repaired by the nearest any authorized Toyota dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
● Vehicles with emergency tire puncture re pair kit: If the tire pressure warn-
ing light comes on even after tire inflation pressure adjustment, it is proba-
ble that you have a flat tire. Check the tires. If a tire is flat, repair the flat tire
by using emergency tire puncture repair kit.
● Avoid abrupt maneuvering and braking. If the vehicle tires deteriorate, you
could lose control of the steering wheel or the brakes.
■ If a blowout or sudden air leakage should occur
The tire pressure warning system may not activate immediately.
NOTICE
■To ensure the tire pressure warning system operates properly
Do not install tires with different specifications or makers, as the tire pres-
sure warning system may not operate properly.

The master warning light also
comes on or flashes in order to
indicate that a message is cur-
rently being displayed on the multi-
information display.
Multi-information display
If any of the warning lights come on again after the following actions
have been performed, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.

If a warning is shown on the multi-information display, stay calm
and perform the following actions:

→ Have the vehicle inspected by any autho-
rized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.
• The hybrid system may not be able to start.
• The parking lock mechanism may not func- tion. When parking, choose a level location
and apply the parking brake securely.
• The power switch may not be able to be turned off. In this case, the power switch
may be turned off by applying the parking
brake.
Shift control system malfunction A buzzer also sounds.
→ Have the vehicle inspected by any autho-
rized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional
immediately. If not inspected, vehicle sys-
tems may stop operating normally.
Shift control system communication malfunction
A buzzer also sounds.
→ Have the vehicle inspected by any autho-
rized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.
• The hybrid system may not be able to start.
• May not be switched to the P position. When parking, choose a level location and
apply the parking brake securely.
• The automatically P position selection func-
tion ( →P. 219) may not function. Before
turning the power switch off, securely press
the P position switch, and be sure to check
that the shift position is in P by verifying the
shift position or P position switch operation
indicator lights.
• The power switch may not be able to be turned off. In this case, the power switch
may be turned off by applying the parking
brake.

If the hybrid system will not start
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
●The electronic key may not be functioning properly.

● There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle. ( →P. 8 7 )
● There may be a malfunction in the immobilizer system.
* (→ P. 9 1 )
● There may be a malfunction in the shift control system.

( → P. 212, 389, 402)
● The hybrid system may be malfunctioning due to an electrical prob-
lem such as electronic key battery depletion or a blown fuse. How-
ever, depending on the type of malfunction, an interim measure is
available to start the hybrid system. ( →P. 449)
*: It may not be possible to shift the shift position other than P.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
● The 12-volt battery may be discharged. ( →P. 452)
● The 12-volt battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.
(→ P. 337)
Reasons for the hybrid system not starting vary depending on
the situation. Check the following and perform the appropriate
procedure:
The hybrid system will not start even though the correct starting
procedure is being followed. ( →P. 207)
The interior lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does not
sound or sounds at a low volume.

When trouble arises
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
●The 12-volt battery may be discharged. ( →P. 452)
● One or both of the 12-volt battery terminals may be disconnected.
(→ P. 337)
Contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional if the problem cannot be repaired,
or if repair procedures are unknown.
When the hybrid system does not start, the following steps can be
used as an interim measure to start the hybrid system if the power
switch is functioning normally.
Do not use this starting procedure except in cases of emergency. Set the parking brake.
Turn the power switch to ACCESSORY mode.
Press and hold the power switch for about 15 seconds while
depressing the brake pedal firmly.
Even if the hybrid system can be started using the above steps, the
system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.
The interior lights and headlights do not turn on, or the horn
does not sound.
