A buzzer also sounds.
Restart the hybrid system when starting
the vehicle.
Indicates a malfunction in the shift control system
In this situation, there is a possibility that the
parking lock mechanism will not work. When
parking, park the vehicle on a flat surface and
apply the parking brake securely. Also, it may
not be possible to turn the power switch off. If
this happens, applying the parking brake will
enable the switch to be turned off. A buzzer
also sounds.
Have the vehicle inspected by any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Indicates a malfunction in the hybrid system
A buzzer also sounds.
Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place
and contact any authorized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer.
Indicates that the hybrid battery (traction battery)
is low
A buzzer also sounds.
When stopping the vehicle, shift the shift
position to P. The battery cannot be
charged with the shift position in N.
Indicates that the shift position was changed and
Drive-Start Control was operated while depress-
ing the accelerator pedal
A buzzer also sounds.
Momentarily release the accelerator pedal.

When trouble arises

Indicates that the PCS (Pre-Crash Safety sys-
tem) is temporarily unavailable
When conditions improve, the system
resumes operation. If this item is displayed
continuously, have the vehicle inspected
by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

Indicates that the PCS (Pre-Crash Safety sys-
tem) is temporarily unavailable
When conditions improve, the system

An attempt was made to change the shift position
when the 12-volt battery voltage was low.
A buzzer also sounds.
Maintain the hybrid system operation state for approximately 15 minutes or more torecharge the 12-volt battery.
The hybrid system will not start: Start the hybrid system by following the “If the12-volt battery is discharged” procedure
( P. 513). The message appears frequently: The 12-volt battery may be deteriorating.
The 12-volt battery may be discharged if this continues. Have the 12-volt batteryinspected at any author ized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli- able repairer.
The shift lever and P position switch were repeat-
edly operated in quick succession.
A buzzer also sounds.
Wait approximately 20 seconds and change
the shift position.
An attempt was made to change the shift position
to B when the shift position was P or N.
A buzzer also sounds.
Change the shift position to D, and then
change the shift position to B.
An attempt was made to change the shift position to R, D or B with the power switch on (READY
indicator turned off). A buzzer also sounds.
After starting the hybrid system, change the shift position to R, D or B*.
*: When changing the shift position to B, first
change the shift position to D, and then
change the shift position to B.

Insufficient 12-volt battery charge
The parking lock mechanism may not function.
The hybrid system may not be able to start.
The power switch may not be able to be turned
off. In this case, the power switch may be
turned off by applying the parking brake.
After charging the 12-volt battery, the message
may continue to be displayed until the shift
position is changed from P.
A buzzer also sounds.
When parking, choose a level location and
apply the parking brake securely.
Maintain the hybrid system operation state
for approximately 15 minutes or more to
recharge the 12-volt battery.
The hybrid system will not start: Start the
hybrid system by following the “If the
12-volt battery is discharged” procedure
( P. 513).
If the message does not disappear: The
12-volt battery may be deteriorating.
The 12-volt battery may be discharged if
this continues. Have the 12-volt battery
inspected at any author ized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer.
Shift control system malfunction
A buzzer also sounds.
Have the vehicle inspected by any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
• The hybrid system may not be able to start.
• The parking lock mechanism may not func-
tion. When parking, choose a level location
and apply the parking brake securely.
• The power switch may not be able to be
turned off. In this case, the power switch
may be turned off by applying the parking
brake.

The reason the EV drive mode is not available

Use the EV drive mode when it becomes
available.

When trouble arises
If the hybrid system will not start
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
● The electronic key may not be functioning properly.* (P. 5 1 1 )
● There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle. ( P. 8 7 )
● There may be a malfunction in the immobilizer system.* (P. 9 1 )
● There may be a malfunction in the shift control system.*
( P. 229, 447, 460)
● The hybrid system may be malfunctioning due to an electrical prob-
lem such as electronic key battery depletion or a blown fuse. How-
ever, depending on the type of malfunction, an interim measure is
available to start the hybrid system. ( P. 510)
*: It may not be possible to shift the shift position other than P.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
● The 12-volt battery may be discharged. (P. 513)
● The 12-volt battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.
( P. 389)
Reasons for the hybrid system not starting vary depending on
the situation. Check the following and perform the appropriate
procedure:
The hybrid system will not start even though the correct starting
procedure is being followed. ( P. 224)
The interior lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does not
sound or sounds at a low volume.

One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
● The 12-volt battery may be discharged. (P. 513)
● One or both of the 12-volt battery terminals may be disconnected.
( P. 389)
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer,
or any reliable repairer if the problem cannot be repaired, or if repair
procedures are unknown.
When the hybrid system does not start, the following steps can be
used as an interim measure to start the hybrid system if the power
switch is functioning normally.
Do not use this starting procedure except in cases of emergency.
Set the parking brake.
Turn the power switch to ACCESSORY mode.
Press and hold the power switch for about 15 seconds while
depressing the brake pedal firmly.
Even if the hybrid system can be started using the above steps, the
system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
The interior lights and headlights do not turn on, or the horn
does not sound.

When trouble arises
If the electronic key does not operate
properly
Use the mechanical key ( P. 141)
in order to perform the following
operations:
Locks all the doors
Unlocks all the doors
Ensure that the shift position is in P and depress the brake pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side
of the electronic key to the
power switch.
When the electronic key is
detected, a buzzer sounds and the
power switch will turn to ON mode.
When the smart entry & start sys-
tem is deactivated in customization
setting, the power switch will turn
to ACCESSORY mode.
Firmly depress the brake pedal and check that the smart entry &
start system indicator light (green) turns on (vehicles without multi-
information display) or is shown on the multi-information
display (vehicles with multi-information display).
If communication between the electronic key and vehicle is inter-
rupted ( P. 156) or the electronic key cannot be used because the
battery is depleted, the smart entry & start system and wireless
remote control cannot be used. In such cases, the doors can be
opened and the hybrid system can be started by following the pro-
cedure below.
