■If a warning light comes on, a warning message is displayed or the 12-
volt battery is disconnected
The hybrid system may not start. In that case, try to start the system again. If
the “READY” indicator does not come on, contact your Toyota dea ler.
■ Running out of fuel
When the vehicle has run out of fuel and the hybrid system cann ot be started,
refuel the vehicle with at least enough gasoline to make the lo w fuel level
warning light ( P. 673) go off. If there is only a small amount of fuel, the
hybrid system may not be able to start. (The standard amount of fuel is about
2.0 gal. [7.5 L, 1.7 Imp.gal.], when the vehicle is on a level surface. This value
may vary when the vehicle is on a slope. Add extra fuel when th e vehicle is
inclined.)
■ Electromagnetic waves
●High voltage parts and cables on the hybrid vehicles incorporat e electro-
magnetic shielding, and therefore emit approximately the same amount of
electromagnetic waves as conventional gasoline powered vehicles or home
electronic appliances.
● Your vehicle may cause sound interference in some third party-p roduced
radio parts.
■ Effect of magnetic forces
If objects that generate strong magnetic forces, such as large speakers, are
placed inside the luggage compartment or installed nearby, the generated
magnetic forces may negatively affect the hybrid system.
■ Hybrid battery (traction batt ery) (lithium-ion battery)
The hybrid battery (traction battery) has a limited service lif e.
The hybrid battery (traction battery) capacity (the ability to hold a charge)
reduces with time and use in the same way as other rechargeable batteries.
The extent at which capacity reduces changes drastically depending on the
environment (ambient temperature, etc.) and usage conditions, such as how
the vehicle is driven and how the hybrid battery (traction batt ery) is charged.
This is a natural characteristic of lithium-ion batteries, and is not a malfunc-
tion. Also, even though the distance that can be driven in EV m ode decreases
when the hybrid battery (traction battery) capacity reduces, ve hicle perfor-
mance does not significantly become worse.
In order to reduce the possibility of the capacity reducing, fo llow the directions
listed on P. 144, “Capacity reduction of the hybrid battery (tr action battery)”.
■ Starting the hybrid system in a n extremely cold environment
When the hybrid battery (traction battery) is extremely cold (b elow approxi-
mately -22 F [-30C]) under the influence of the outside temperature, it may
not be possible to start the hybrid system. In this case, try to start the hybrid
system again after the temperature of the hybrid battery increases due to the
outside temperature increase etc.

Driving
Opening the fuel tank cap
●Turn the power switch off and ensure that all the doors and win -
dows are closed.
● Confirm the type of fuel.

■ Fuel tank opening for unleaded gasoline
To help prevent incorrect fueling, your vehicle has a fuel tank opening that
only accommodates the special nozzle on unleaded fuel pumps.
The fuel tank of your vehicle h as a special structure, which
requires a reduction in fuel tank pressure before refueling. After
the opener switch has been pressed, it will take several second s
until the vehicle is r eady for refueling.

WARNING
■When refueling the vehicle
Observe the following precautions while refueling the vehicle. Failure to do
so may result in death or serious injury.
● After exiting the vehicle and before opening the fuel door, touch an
unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity. It is important to
discharge static electricity before refueling because sparks resulting from
static electricity can cause fuel vapors to ignite while refueling.
● Always hold the grips on the fuel tank cap and turn it slowly t o remove it.
A whooshing sound may be heard when the fuel tank cap is loosened.
Wait until the sound cannot be heard before fully removing the cap. In hot
weather, pressurized fuel may spray out of the filler neck and cause injury.
● Do not allow anyone that has not discharged static electricity from their
body to come close to an open fuel tank.
● Do not inhale vaporized fuel.
Fuel contains substances that are harmful if inhaled.
● Do not smoke while refueling the vehicle.
Doing so may cause the fuel to ignite and cause a fire.
● Do not return to the vehicle or touch any person or object that is statically
charged.
This may cause static electricity to build up, resulting in a p ossible ignition
hazard.
■ When refueling
Observe the following precautions to prevent fuel overflowing from the fuel
tank:
● Securely insert the fuel nozzle into the fuel filler neck.
● Stop filling the tank after the fuel nozzle automatically click s off.
● Do not top off the fuel tank.

Press the opener to open the
fuel filler door.
The fuel filler door will open within
about 10 seconds of the switch
being pressed. Before refueling is
possible, a message will be shown
on the multi-information display in
the instrument cluster to indicate
the progress of the fuel filler door
opener.
Turn the fuel tank cap slowly to
open and hang it on the back of
the fuel filler door.
NOTICE
■Refueling
● Finish refueling within 30 minutes. If more than 30 minutes pas ses, the
internal valve closes. In this condition, fuel may overflow dur ing the refuel-
ing process.
Press the fuel filler door opener switch again.
● Do not spill fuel during refueling.
Doing so may damage the vehicle, such as causing the emission c ontrol
system to operate abnormally or damaging fuel system components or the
vehicle’s painted surface.

■When the fuel filler door cannot be opened by pressing the inside switch
Using the lever to open the fuel filler door may not allow for an adequate
reduction in fuel tank pressure before refueling. To prevent fu el from spilling
out, turn the cap slowly when removing it.
During refueling, fuel may spill out from the filler opening due to air being dis-
charged from inside the fuel tank. Therefore, fill the fuel tan k carefully and
slowly. Open the back door and remove the
cover underneath the luggage compart-
ment light.
Pull the lever backward and check that
the fuel lid opens.

■
When refueling

When refueling your vehicle, make sure
that the fuel filler door lock is not pushed
by the fuel nozzle boot, etc., as this may
cause a valve to close, possibly resulting
in a fuel spill.
If the fuel filler door lock has been
pushed, operate the fuel filler door
opener switch in the vehicle before con-
tinuing to refuel.

After refueling, turn the fuel tank
cap until you hear a click. Once
the cap is released, it will turn
slightly in the opposite direction.

■When replacing the fuel tank cap
Do not use anything but a genuine Toyota fuel tank cap designed for your
vehicle. Doing so may cause a fire or other incident which may result in
death or serious injury.

Fogging up of the windows
●The windows will easily fog up when the humidity in the vehicle is high.
Turning on will dehumidify the air from the outlets and defog the
windshield effectively.
● If you turn off, the windows may fog up more easily.
● The windows may fog up if the recirculated air mode is used.
■ Windshield fog detection function
When automatic mode is set, the humidity sensor (P. 519) detects fog on
the windshield and controls the air conditioning system to prev ent fog.
■ When driving on dusty roads
Close all windows. If dust thrown up by the vehicle is still drawn into the vehi-
cle after closing the windows, it is recommended that the air intake mode be
set to outside air mode and the fan speed to any setting except off.
■ Outside/recirculated air mode
●Setting to the recirculated air mode temporarily is recommended in prevent-
ing dirty air from entering the vehicle interior and helping to cool the vehicle
when the outside air temperature is high.
● Outside/recirculated air mode may automatically switch dependin g on the
temperature setting or the inside temperature.
■ Fresh air intake system while parking
When parking, the system automatically switches to outside air mode to
encourage better air circulation throughout the vehicle, helpin g to reduce
odors that occur when starting the vehicle.
■ Operation of the air conditioning system in the air conditionin g eco
mode
● In the air conditioning eco mode, the air conditioning system i s controlled as
follows to prioritize fuel efficiency:
• Engine speed and compressor operation controlled to restrict h eating/
cooling capacity
• Fan speed restricted when automatic mode is selected
● To improve air conditioning performance, perform the following operations:
• Adjust the fan speed
• Adjust the temperature setting
• Turn off the air conditioning eco mode
● When the driving mode is set to Eco driving mode, the air condi tioning eco
mode will be turned on automatically. Even in this case, the ai r conditioning
eco mode can be turned off by pressing . ( P. 425)
■ When the outside tempera ture falls to nearly 32F (0 C)
The dehumidification function may not operate even when is pressed.
