WARNING
⬛Modification and disposal of SRS airbag system components
Do not dispose of your vehicle or pe rform any of the following modifications
without consulting your Toyota dealer.
The SRS airbags may malfunction or deploy (inflate) accidentally, causing death
or serious injury.
⚫Installation, removal, disassembly and repair of the SRS airbags
⚫Vehicles without SRS side and curtain shield airbags: Repairs, modifications,
removal or replacement of the steerin g wheel, instrument panel, dashboard
⚫Vehicles with SRS side and curtain sh ield airbags: Repairs, modifications,
removal or replacement of the steering wheel, instrument panel, dashboard,
seats or seat upholstery, front, side and rear pillars or roof side rails
⚫Repairs or modifications of the front fender, front bumper or side of the
occupant compartment
⚫Installation of a grille guard (bull bars, kangaroo bar, etc.), snow plows or
winches
⚫Modifications to the vehi cle’s suspension system
⚫Installation of electronic devices such as mobile two-way radios (RF trans-
mitter) and CD players
⚫Modification to your vehicle for a person with a physical disability
⬛If the SRS airbags deploy (inflate)
⚫A loud noise and white gas will be emitted.
⚫Vehicles without SRS curtain shield airbag : In addition to the front seat, parts
of the airbag module (steering whee l hub, airbag cover and inflator) may
become hot for several minutes. Th e airbag itself may also be hot.
⚫Vehicles with SRS side and curtain shie ld airbags: Parts of the airbag module
(steering wheel hub, airbag cover and infl ator), as well as parts of the front
seat, front pillar, center pillar, rear pillar, and roof side rails, may also become
hot for several minutes. The airbag itself may also be hot.
⚫The windshield may be damaged.

⬛When using a high pressure car wash
⚫Do not splash water directly to the cameras✽ or their surrounding area using
a high-pressure washer during a car wash. The high water pressure adds
stress and may prevent the equipment from working properly.
⚫Do not bring the nozzle tip close to the coupling parts, boots (rubber or resin
covers) and connectors of the following parts.
The parts may be damaged if they come into contact with high pressure
water.

⦁ Suspension parts
⦁ Brake parts
⚫Resin parts, such as moldings and bumpers, may be deformed and dam-
aged, so keep the cleaning nozzle at le ast 30 cm (11.9 in.) away from the
vehicle body. Also, do not continuous ly spray water in the same place.
⚫Do not spray the lower part of the windshield continuously. If water enters
the air conditioning system intake loca ted there, the air conditioning system
may not operate correctly.

Do-it-yourself maintenance
⚫What about do-it-yourself maintenance?
Many of the maintenance items are easy to do yourself if you have a little mechanical
ability and a few basic automotive tools. Simple instructions for how to perform them
are presented in this section.
Note, however, that some maintenance task s require special tools and skills. These
are best performed by qualified technician s. Even if you are an experienced do-it-
yourself mechanic, we recommend that repairs and maintenance be conducted by
your Toyota dealer who will keep a record of maintenance on your vehicle. This
record could be helpful should you ever require Warranty Service.
⬛Does your vehicle need repairs?
Be on the alert for changes in performance and sounds, and visual tip-offs that
indicate service is needed. Some important clues are:
⚫Engine misses, stumbling or pinging
⚫Appreciable loss of power
⚫Strange engine noises
⚫A fluid leak under the vehicle (However , water dripping from the air condi-
tioning system after use is normal.)
⚫Change in exhaust sound (This may indica te a dangerous carbon monoxide leak.
Drive with the windows open and have th e exhaust system checked immediately.)
⚫Flat-looking tires, excessive tire squeal when cornering, uneven tire wear
⚫Vehicle pulls to one side when driven straight on a level road
⚫Strange noises related to suspension movement
⚫Loss of brake effectiveness, spongy feeling brake pedal or clutch pedal (vehi-
cles with a manual transmission), pe dal almost touches the floor, vehicle
pulls to one side when braking
⚫Engine coolant temperature continually higher than normal
If you notice any of these clues, take yo ur vehicle to your Toyota dealer as soon
as possible. Your vehicle may need adjustment or repair.

Improper maintenance could result in serious damage to the vehicle and pos-
sible death or serious injury.
⬛Handling of the battery
Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead com-
pounds which are known to cause brain damage. Wash your hands after han-
