PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE
If a normal code is displayed during the DTC check but the trouble still occurs (reappears), troubleshoot for
each problem symptom, checking the circuits for each symptom in the order given in the table below. Pro-
ceed to the page indicated for each circuit.
HINT:
If the instruction ”Proceed to next circuit inspection shown on matrix chart” is given in the flow chart
for each circuit, proceed to the circuit with the next highest number in the table to continue the check.
If the trouble still reappears even through there are no abnormalities in any of the other circuits, then
check or replace the cruise control ECU as the last step.

1996 RAV4 (RM447U)
Electronically Controlled Transaxle Communication Circuit
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
When driving uphill under cruise control, in order to reduce shifting due to ON−OFF overdrive operation and
to provide smooth driving, when down shifting in the electronically controlled transaxle occurs, a signal to
prevent upshift until the end of the uphill slope is sent from the cruise control ECU to the electronically con-
trolled transaxle.
Terminal ECM of the cruise control ECU detects the shift change signal (output to electronically controlled
transaxle No.2 solenoid) from the electronically controlled transaxle.
If vehicle speed down, also when terminal electronically controlled transaxle of the cruise control ECU re-
ceive down shifting signal, it sends a signal from terminal OD to OD1 to cut overdrive until the end of the
uphill slope, and the gear shifts are reduced and gear shift points in the electronically controlled transaxle
are changed.

Park/Neutral Position Switch Circuit
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
When the shift position is put in except D position, a signal is sent from the park/neutral position switch to
the ECU. When this signal is input during cruise control driving, the ECU cancels the cruise control.

the pulley toward the left as far as it will go, and temporari-
ly tighten it.
(b) Remove the timing belt from the camshaft timing pulley.

HINT:
When re−using timing belt:
Remove the pulley without turning it.
20. REMOVE NO. 1 TIMING BELT COVER
(a) Disconnect the engine wire from the timing belt cover.
(b) Remove the 4 bolts and timing belt cover.

22. REMOVE TIMING BELT
HINT:
(When re−using timing belt): Draw a direction arrow on the tim-
ing belt (in the direction of engine revolution), and place match-
marks on the timing belt and crankshaft timing pulley.

31. REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER
Remove the 3 bolts and timing belt cover.
NOTICE:
Support the timing belt, so the meshing of the crank-
shaft timing pulley and timing belt does not shift..
Be careful not to drop anything inside the timing belt
cover
Do not allow the belt to come into contact with oil, wa-
ter or dust.
32. REMOVE CAMSHAFTS
NOTICE:
Since the thrust clearance of the camshaft is small, the
camshaft must be kept level while it is being removed. If the
camshaft is not kept level, the portion of the cylinder head
receiving the shaft thrust may crack or be damaged, caus-
ing the camshaft to seize or break. To avoid this, the follow-
ing steps should be carried out.
(a) Remove the exhaust camshaft.
(1) Set the knock pin of the intake camshaft at 10 − 45°
BTDC of camshaft angle.
HINT:
The above angle allows No. 2 and No. 4 cylinder cam lobes of
the exhaust camshaft to push their valve lifters evenly.
(2) Secure the exhaust camshaft sub gear to drive gear
with a service bolt.
Recommended service bolt:
Thread diameter6 mm
Thread pitch1.0 mm
Bolt length16 − 20 mm (0.63 − 0.79 in.)
