To lock and unlock all the doors, push
the switches of the wireless remote
control key slowly and securely.
To lock: Push the lock switch. The side
doors and back door are locked simulta-
neously. At this time, the turn signal lights
will flash once.
Check to see that the side doors and
back door are securely locked.
If any of the doors is not securely closed,
or if the key is in the engine switch,
locking cannot be performed by the lock
switch.
To unlock: Push the unlock switch once to
unlock the driver ’s door alone. Pushing
the switch twice within 3 seconds unlocks
all the doors simultaneously. Each time
the unlock switch is pushed, the turn sig-
nal lights will flash twice.
When the unlock switch is pressed, the
interior lights and engine switch light come
on. The lights remain on for about 15
seconds unless any of the doors is
opened and then closed. (For further infor-
mation, see “Interior lights” on page 92
and “Engine (ignition) switch light” on
page 93.)You have 30 seconds to open a door after
using the wireless remote unlock feature.
If a door is not opened by then, all the
doors will be automatically locked again.
If the lock or unlock switch is kept
pressed in, the locking or unlocking opera-
tion is not repeated. Release the switch
and then push it again.

Pushing the panic switch for 1 second
blows the horn intermittently and
flashes the headlights, tail lights and
emergency flashers and turns on the
interior light.
The panic switch is used to deter vehicle
theft when you witness anyone attempting
to break into or damage your vehicle.
The panic mode will last for one minute.
To stop the panic mode midway, do the
following:
Push any switch on the key.
Turn the engine switch from the
“LOCK” to “ON” position.
The panic mode does not work when the
engine switch is in the “ON” position.

When the side doors and back door are
unlocked simultaneously using either the
key or the wireless remote control func-
tion, the interior lights and engine switch
light will come on and remain on for about
15 seconds before fading out. (For further
information, see “Interior lights” on page
92 and “Engine (ignition) switch light” on
page 93.)

LOCKING AND UNLOCKING WITH
INSIDE LOCK KNOB
Move the lock knob.
To lock: Push the knob forward.
To unlock: Pull the knob backward.
The side doors can be opened by pulling
the inside handle even if the lock knobs
are in the locked position.
CAUTION
Do not pull the inside handle of the
doors while driving. The doors may
be opened and the passengers are
thrown out of the vehicle and it may
result in death or serious injury. Be
especially careful for the side doors,
the doors may be opened even if the
inside lock knobs are in locked posi-
tion. Scion strongly recommends that
all children be placed in the rear seat
of the vehicle.
Closing the door with the lock knob in the
lock position will also lock the door. Be
careful not to lock your keys in the ve-
hicle.
The side doors cannot be locked when
either door is open and the key is in the
engine switch.

Power windows

The windows can be operated with the
switch on each door. The passenger ’s
window can also be controlled by the
switch on the driver ’s door.
The power windows work when the engine
switch is in the “ON” position.
OPERATING THE SWITCHES
To lower the window, push the switch
halfway down. Pull it up to raise the
window. The window glass moves as
long as the switch is operated.

switch
Automatic operation: Push the switch
completely down or pull it completely up,
and then release it. The window will fully
open or close. To stop the window part-
way, lightly move the switch in the oppo-
site direction and then release it.
Window lock switch: If you push in the
window lock switch on the driver ’s door,
the passenger ’s window cannot be oper-
ated.
The indicator lights on the switch tell you
which of the switches can be operated.
Jam protection function: During automat-
ic closing operation, the window stops and
opens halfway if something gets caught
between the window and body. If the window receives a strong impact,
this function may work even if nothing is
caught.
CAUTION
To avoid death or serious injury, you
must do the following.
Before you close the power win-
dows, always make sure there is
nobody around the power windows.
You must also make sure the
heads, hands and other parts of the
bodies of all occupants are kept
completely inside the vehicle. If
someone’s neck, head or hands get
caught in a closing window, it
could result in death or serious in-
jury. When anyone closes the power
windows, make sure he or she op-
erates the windows safely.
When small children are in the ve-
hicle, never let them use the power
window switches without supervi-
sion. Use the window lock switch to
prevent them from making unex-
pected use of the switches.
Be sure to remove the ignition key
when you leave your vehicle.

Never leave anyone (particularly a
small child) alone in your vehicle,
especially with the ignition key still
inserted. Otherwise, he/she could
use the power window switches and
get trapped in a window. Unat-
tended person (particularly a small
child) can be involved in a serious
accident.
Never try jamming any part of your
body to activate the jam protection
function intentionally, as it could re-
sult in death or serious injury.
The jam protection function may
not work if something gets caught
just before the window is fully
closed.
If the battery is disconnected or run
down
The power window may not operate auto-
matically and the jam protection function
will not function correctly after you recon-
nect, replace or recharge the battery. At
this time, the indicator lights of the
switches will flash. In any of these cases,
you should normalize the power window
on each door.To normalize the power windows:
1. Push down the power window switch of each door and lower the windows half-
way.
2. Pull up the switch until the windows close and hold the switch for at least
one second.
Make sure that the windows open and
close automatically. If the power windows
cannot be operated properly, have them
checked by your Scion dealer.
Back door

To open the back door, push the back
door opener and raise the door.
The back door can be opened when the
vehicle is stopped.
The back door is locked and unlocked
simultaneously with side doors (see
“—Locking and unlocking doors and back
door” on page 12 and “Side doors” on
page 15).

When the side doors and back door are
unlocked simultaneously with a key, the
interior lights and engine switch light will
come on and remain on for about 15 sec-
onds before fading out. (For details, see
“Interior lights” on page 92 and “Engine
(ignition) switch light” on page 93.)
If the back door opener does not operate,
see “If you cannot operate back door
opener” on page 210.
If the battery is disconnected or run
down, the back door will be automatically
locked and the back door system may not
work after you reconnect, replace or re-
charge the battery. In any of these cases,
normalize the back door system by follow-
ing procedure.
1. Unlock the back door with the remote control key or power door lock switch.
2. Close the back door completely by hand.
If the back door system does not operate
properly after the above procedure, there
may be a problem in the system. Contact
your Scion dealer.

When closing the back door, the inside
handle can be used to make the reach
easier.
To close the back door, lower it and press
down on it. After closing the back door,
try pulling it up to make sure it is secure-
ly closed.
See “Cargo and luggage” on page 175 for
precautions to observe when loading lug-
gage.
CAUTION
Keep the back door closed while driv-
ing. This not only keeps the luggage
from being thrown out but also pre-
vents exhaust gases from entering
the vehicle.

CAUTION
To avoid death or serious injury, you
must do the following.
While the vehicle is moving, always
keep the heads, hands, etc. away
from the roof opening. Failure to do
so could result in death or serious
injury.
Before you close the moon roof,
always make sure there is nobody
around the moon roof. You must
also make sure nobody places his
or her head, hands and other parts
of the body in the roof opening. If
someone’s neck, head or hands get
caught in the closing roof, it could
result in death or serious injury.
When anyone closes the moon roof,
first make sure it is safe to do so.
Be sure to remove the ignition key
when you leave your vehicle.
Never leave anyone (particularly a
small child) alone in your vehicle,
especially with the ignition key still
inserted. Otherwise, he/she could
use the moon roof switches and get
trapped in the roof opening. Unat-
tended persons (particularly a small
child) can be involved in a serious
accident.
Never sit on top of the vehicle
around the roof opening.
Never try jamming any part of your
body to activate the jam protection
function intentionally, as it could re-
sult in death or serious injury.
The jam protection function may
not work if something gets caught
just before the moon roof is fully
closed.
NOTICE
There is the possibility that water or
rain will get into the vehicle if you
operate the moon roof after a rainfall,
snowfall or car wash. Wipe the moon
roof dry with a cloth before operating
it.

Do not put anything or any part of
your body on or in front of the
dashboard, lower portion of instru-
ment panel, steering wheel pad that
houses the front airbag system or
in the area where the SRS knee
airbag will inflate. They might re-
strict inflation or cause death or
serious injury as they are projected
rearward by the force of the deploy-
ing airbags. Likewise, the driver
and front passenger should not
hold objects in their arms or on
their knees.
If a vinyl cover is put on the area
where the SRS knee airbag will
deploy, be sure to remove it.
Do not modify or remove any wir-
ing. Do not modify, remove, strike
or open any components such as
the steering wheel pad, steering
wheel, column cover, dashboard
near the front passenger airbag,
front passenger airbag cover, front
passenger airbag, driver knee air-
bag or airbag sensor assembly. Do-
ing so may prevent the front airbag
system from activating correctly,
cause sudden activation of the sys-
tem or disable the system, which
could result in death or serious in-
jury.
Failure to follow these instructions
can result in death or serious injury.
Consult your Scion dealer about any
repair and modification.
If you wish to modify your vehicle for
a person with a physical disability,
consult your Scion dealer. It may dan-
gerously interfere with the SRS front
airbags operation.

Do not attach any heavy, sharp or
hard objects such as keys or acces-
sories to the ignition key. The ob-
jects may restrict the SRS knee air-
bag inflation or be thrust into the
driver’s seat area by the force of
the deploying airbag, thus causing
a danger.
