■Alarms and warning indicators
A combination of exterior and interior alarms as well as warning lights are
used to prevent theft of the vehicle and unforeseeable accidents resulting
from erroneous operation.
●When any warning lights come on
Take appropriate measures depending on which warning light comes on.

The following table describes circumstances and correction procedures

When driving

■The brightness of the instrument panel lights
When the headlight switch is turned to on, the brightness will be reduced
slightly unless the control knob is turned fully clockwise.
■Outside temperature display
●In the following situations, the correct outside temperature may not be
displayed, or the display may take longer than normal to change.
• When stopped, or driving at low speeds (less than 12 mph [20 km/h])
• When the outside temperature has changed suddenly (at the entrance/
exit of a garage, tunnel, etc.)
●When “--” is displayed, the system may be malfunctioning.
Take your vehicle to your Scion dealer.
NOTICE
■To prevent damage to the engine and its components
Do not let the indicator needle of the tachometer enter the red zone, which
indicates the maximum engine speed.
■The odometer/trip meter display at low temperatures
Allow the interior of the vehicle to warm up before using the liquid crystal
information display. At extremely low temperatures, the information display
monitor may respond slowly, and display changes may be delayed.

■Illuminated entry system
Vehicles without a smart key system
The lights automatically turn on/off according to the engine switch position,
whether the doors are locked/unlocked, and whether the doors are open/
closed.
Vehicles with a smart key system
The lights automatically turn on/off according to “ENGINE START STOP”
switch mode, the presence of the electronic key, whether the doors are
locked/unlocked, and whether the doors are open/closed.
■To prevent battery discharge
Vehicles without a smart key system
If the interior lights remain on when the engine switch is turned off, the lights
will go off automatically after 20 minutes.
Vehicles with a smart key system
If the interior lights remain on when the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is
turned off, the lights will go off automatically after 20 minutes.
■Customization that can be configured at Scion dealer
Settings (e.g. The time elapsed before lights turn off) can be changed.

When trouble arises

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency

If the engine will not star t
If the engine will not start even though correct starting procedures
are being followed (P. 165, 169), consider each of the following
points:
■The engine will not start even though the starter motor
operates normally.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
●There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle.
●The engine may be flooded.
Try to restart the engine again following correct starting proce-
dures. (P. 165, 169)
●There may be a malfunction in the engine immobilizer system.
(P. 102)
■The starter motor turns over slowly, the interior lights and
headlights are dim, or the horn does not sound or sounds at
a low volume.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
●The battery may be discharged. (P. 414)
●The battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.
■The starter motor does not turn over (vehicles with a smart
key system)
The engine starting system may be malfunctioning due to an
electrical problem such as an open circuit or a blown fuse. How-
ever, an interim measure is available to start the engine.
(P. 407)
