Shift position uses
*1: Shifting to the D position allows the system to select a gear suitable for
the driving conditions. Setting the shift lever to the D position is recom-
mended for normal driving.
*2: By selecting shift ranges using paddle shift switches, you can controlengine braking force.
*3: Selecting shift ranges using S mode restricts the upper limit of the pos-sible gear ranges, controls engine braking force, and prevents unnec-
essary upshifting.

■Shift ranges and their functions
●Automatically selecting gears between 1 and 6 according to
vehicle speed and driving conditi ons. But, the gear is limited
according to selected shift range.
● You can choose from 6 levels of engine braking force.
● A lower shift range will provide greater engine br aking force than
a higher shift ran ge, and the engine speed will also increase.
■Paddle shift switch
●When the “-” paddle shift switch is operated in the D position, a shift
range will be automatically selected. The highest gear of the first shift
range will be one gear lower than the gear in use during normal D posi-
tion driving.
● Automatic deactivation of shift range selection in the D position
Shift range selection in the D position will be deactivated in the following
situations:
• The “+” paddle shift switch is held down for a period of time
• When the vehicle comes to a stop
• If the accelerator pedal is depressed for longer than a certain period of
time in one shift range
■ S mode
●When the shift range is 4 or lower, holding the shift lever toward “+” sets
the shift range to 6.
● To prevent excessive engine speed, a function was adopted that auto-
matically selects a higher shift range before the engine speed becomes
too high.
● To protect the automatic transmission, a function is adopted that auto-
matically selects a higher shift range when the fluid temperature is high.

*1: These lights turn on when the engine switch is turned to the “ON” posi-tion (vehicles without a smart key system) or the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch is turned to IGNITION ON mode (vehicles with a smart
key system) to indicate that a system check is being performed. They
will turn off after the engine is started, or after a few seconds. There
may be a malfunction in a system if a light does not come on, or if the
lights do not turn off. Have the vehicle inspected by your Scion dealer.
*2: The light flashes to indicate that the system is operating.

Warning lights
Warning lights inform the driver of malfunctions in any of the
vehicle’s systems. ( P. 374)

position (vehicles without a smart key system) or the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch is turned to IGNITION ON mode (vehicles
with a smart key system) to indicate that a system check is being
performed. They will turn off after the engine is started, or after a
few seconds. There may be a malfunction in a system if a light does
not come on, or if the lights do not turn off. Have the vehicle
inspected by your Scion dealer.

■Automatic light off system
Vehicles without a smart key system
●When the headlights come on: The headlights and tail lights turn off 30
seconds after a door is opened and closed if the engine switch is turned
to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position. (The lights turn off immediately if
on the key is pressed after all the doors are locked.)
● When only the tail lights come on: The tail lights turn off automatically if
the engine switch is turned to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position and the
driver’s door is opened.
To turn the lights on again, turn the engine switch to the “ON” position, or
turn the lights off and then back to or .
If any of the doors is kept open, the lights automatically turn off after 20 min-
utes.
Vehicles with a smart key system
● When the headlights come on: The headlights and tail lights turn off 30
seconds after a door is opened and closed if the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch is turned to ACCESSORY mode or turned off. (The lights
turn off immediately if on the key is pressed after all the doors are
locked.)
● When only the tail lights come on: The tail lights turn off automatically if
the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is turned to ACCESSORY mode or
turned off and the driver’s door is opened.
To turn the lights on again, turn the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to IGNI-
TION ON mode, or turn the light switch off and then back to or .

■The windshield wipers and washer can be operated when
Vehicles without a smart key system
The engine switch is in the “ON” position.
Vehicles with a smart key system
The “ENGINE START STOP” switch is in IGNITION ON mode.
■ If no windshield washer fluid sprays
Check that the washer nozzles are not blocked if there is washer fluid in the
windshield washer fluid reservoir.
CAUTION
■Caution regarding the use of washer fluid
When it is cold, do not use the washer fluid until the windshield becomes
warm. The fluid may freeze on the windshield and cause low visibility. This
may lead to an accident, resulting in death or serious injury.
Washer/wiper dual opera-
tion
The wipers will automatically
operate a couple of times after
the washer squirts.

Dinghy towing (manual transmission)
Towing your vehicle with 4 wheels on the groundTo prevent damage to your vehicle, perform the following procedures
before towing: Shift the shift lever to N.
Vehicles without a smart key system:
Turn the engine switch to the “ACC” position. ( P. 165)
Vehicles with a smart key system:
Turn the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to ACCESSORY
mode. ( P. 169)
Ensure that the audio system and other powered devices are turned
off.
Release the parking brake.
After towing, leave the engine in idle for at least 3 minutes before
driving the vehicle.
■Necessary equipment and accessories
Specialized equipment and accessories are required for dinghy towing. Con-
tact the service branch of the motor home manufacturer regarding recom-
mended equipment.
Your vehicle can be dinghy towed in a forward direction (with 4
wheels on the ground) behind a motor home.

244 3-1. Using the air conditioning system and defogger
tC_OM_OM21054U_(U)
■When outside air temperature is below 32 °F (0 °C)
The cooling and dehumidification function may not operate even when
is pressed.
■ Ventilation and air conditioning odors
●To let fresh air in, set the air conditioning system to the outside air mode.
● During use, various odors from inside and outside the vehicle may enter
into and accumulate in the air conditioning system. This may then cause
odor to be emitted from the vents.
● To reduce potential odors from occurring:
It is recommended that the air conditioning system be set to outside air
mode prior to turning the vehicle off.
CAUTION
■To prevent the windshield from fogging up
Do not use during cool air operation in extremely humid weather. The
difference between the temperature of the outside air and that of the wind-
shield can cause the outer surface of the windshield to fog up, blocking your
vision.
NOTICE
■To prevent battery discharge
Do not leave the air conditioning system on longer than necessary when the
engine is stopped.

CAUTION
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may cause the driver’s floor mat to slip, possibly interfering
with the pedals while driving. An unexpectedly high speed may result or it may
become difficult to stop the vehicle, leading to an accident, or leading to death
or a serious injury.
■When installing the driver’s floor mat
●Do not use floor mats designed for other models or different model year
vehicles, even if they are Scion Genuine floor mats.
● Only use floor mats designed for the driver’s seat.
● Always install the floor mat securely using the retaining hooks (clips) pro-
vided.
● Do not use two or more floor mats on top of each other.
● Do not place the floor mat bottom-side up or upside-down.
■ Before driving
●Check that the floor mat is securely
fixed in the correct place with all the
provided retaining hooks (clips). Be
especially careful to perform this check
after cleaning the floor.
● With the engine stopped and the shift
lever in P (automatic transmission) or N
(manual transmission), fully depress
each pedal to the floor to make sure it
does not interfere with the floor mat.
