Understand the system characteristics
of the vehicle to use the functions of the
hybrid system. Also, keep in mind that
hybrid vehicles are similar to conven-
tional vehicles, and it is necessary to
refrain from activities such as sudden
acceleration. Refer to “Plug-in hybrid
vehicle driving tips” (P.99).

safe driving:

3025-1. Before driving
■Operating your vehicle in a foreign
country
Comply with the relevant vehicle regis- tration laws and confirm the availability
of the correct fuel. ( P.620)
WARNING
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
■When starting the vehicle
Always keep your foot on the brake pedal while stopped with the “READY” indicator is illuminated. This
prevents the vehicle from creeping.
■When driving the vehicle
●Do not drive if you are unfamiliar with the location of the brake and accelerator pedals to avoid
depressing the wrong pedal.
• Accidentally depressing the accel- erator pedal instead of the brake
pedal will result in sudden accelera- tion that may lead to an accident.
• When backing up, you may twist
your body around, leading to a diffi- culty in operating the pedals. Make sure to operate the pedals properly.
• Make sure to keep a correct driving posture even when moving the vehicle only slightly. This allows
you to depress the brake and accel- erator pedals properly.
• Depress the brake pedal using your
right foot. Depressing the brake pedal using your left foot may delay response in an emergency, result-
ing in an accident.
●The driver should pay extra atten- tion to pedestrians when the vehicle is powered only by the electric
motor (traction motor). As there is no engine noise, the pedestrians may misjudge the vehicle’s move-
ment. Even though the vehicle is equipped with the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System, drive with care as
pedestrians in the vicinity may still not notice the vehicle if the sur-rounding area is noisy.
●Do not drive the vehicle over or stop the vehicle near flammable
materials such as leaves, paper or rags.The exhaust system and exhaust
gases can be extremely hot. These hot parts may cause a fire if there is any flammable material nearby.
●During normal driving, do not turn off the hybrid system. Turning the
hybrid system off while driving will not cause loss of steering or brak-ing control, however, power assist
to the steering will be lost. This will make it more difficult to steer smoothly, so you should pull over
and stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. In the event of an emergency, such
as if it becomes impossible to stop the vehicle in the normal way:  P.560
●Use engine braking (downshift) to maintain a safe speed when driving
down a steep hill. Using the brakes continuously may cause the brakes to overheat and
lose effectiveness. ( P.321)
●Do not adjust the position of the
steering wheel, the seat, or the inside or outside rear view mirrors while driving.
Doing so may result in a loss of vehicle control.

■Tire information
●Increase the tire inflation pressure to
20.0 kPa (0.2 kgf/cm2 or bar, 3 psi) greater than the recommended value when towing. ( P.624)
●Increase the air pressure of the trailer
tires in accordance with the total
trailer weight and according to the val- ues recommended by the manufac-turer of your trailer.
■Safety checks before towing
●Check that the maximum load limit for the towing hitch/bracket and hitch ball
is not exceeded. Bear in mind that the coupling weight of the trailer will add to the load exerted on the vehicle.
Also make sure that the total load exerted on the vehicle is within the range of the weight limits. ( P.309)
●Ensure that the trailer load is secure.
●Supplementary outside rear view mir- rors should be added to the vehicle if the traffic behind cannot be clearly
seen with standard mirrors. Adjust the extending arms of these mirrors on both sides of the vehicle so that they
always provide maximum visibility of the road behind.
Trailer towing
Your vehicle is designed pri-
marily as a passenger carry-
ing vehicle. Towing a trailer
will have an adverse effect on
handling, performance, brak-
ing, durability, and fuel con-
sumption. Your safety and
satisfaction depend on the
proper use of correct equip-
ment and cautious driving hab-
its. For your safety and the
safety of others, do not over-
load the vehicle or trailer.
To tow a trailer safely, use
extreme care and drive the
vehicle in accordance with the
trailer’s characteristics and
operating conditions.
Toyota warranties do not apply
to damage or malfunction
caused by towing a trailer for
commercial purposes.
Ask your local authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer for further details
before towing, as there are
additional legal requirements
in some countries.
WARNING
Follow all the instructions described in
this section. Failure to do so could cause an acci-dent resulting in death or serious
injury.
■Trailer towing precautions
When towing, make sure that none of
the weight limits are exceeded. ( P.309)
■To avoid accident or injury
●Vehicles with compact spare tire: Do not tow a trailer when the com-
pact spare tire is installed on your vehicle.
●Vehicles with emergency tire punc-ture repair kit:Do not tow a trailer when the tire
installed is repaired with the emer- gency tire puncture repair kit.

Driving
If the hybrid system is stopped with
the shift lever in a position other
than P, the power switch will not be
turned to OFF but instead be turned
to ACC. Perform the following pro-
cedure to turn the switch to OFF:
1 Check that the parking brake is
set.
2 Shift the shift lever to P.
3 Check that “IGNITION ON” is
displayed on the multi-informa-
tion display and press the power
switch shortly and firmly.
4 Check that “ACCESSORY” or
“IGNITION ON” on the multi-
information display is off.

reduce noise, shift the shift lever to
D for normal driving.

only: Selecting shift ranges in the D
position allows suitable use of

Even when performing the following actions with the intent of enabling
engine braking, engine braking will not activate because dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range, or cruise
control will not be canceled.

charge
Do not stop the hybrid system when the shift lever is in a position other
than P. If the hybrid system is stopped in another shift lever position, the power switch will not be turned to
OFF but instead remain ON. If the vehicle is left in ON, 12-volt battery discharge may occur.

To help prevent incorrect fueling, your vehicle has a fuel tank opening that only accommodates the special nozzle on
unleaded fuel pumps.

Observe the following precautions
while refueling the vehicle. Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
●After exiting the vehicle and before opening the fuel door, touch an unpainted metal surface to dis-
charge any static electricity. It is important to discharge static elec-tricity before refueling because
sparks resulting from static electric- ity can cause fuel vapors to ignite while refueling.
●Always hold the grips on the fuel tank cap and turn it slowly to remove it.
A whooshing sound may be heard when the fuel tank cap is loosened. Wait until the sound cannot be
heard before fully removing the cap. In hot weather, pressurized fuel may spray out of the filler neck
and cause injury.
●Do not allow anyone that has not
discharged static electricity from their body to come close to an open fuel tank.
●Do not inhale vaporized fuel.Fuel contains substances that are
harmful if inhaled.
●Do not smoke while refueling the
vehicle. Doing so may cause the fuel to ignite and cause a fire.
●Do not return to the vehicle or touch any person or object that is stati-
cally charged. This may cause static electricity to build up, result-ing in a possible ignition hazard.
■When refueling
Observe the following precautions to
prevent fuel overflowing from the fuel tank:
●Securely insert the fuel nozzle into
the fuel filler neck.
●Stop filling the tank after the fuel
nozzle automatically clicks off.
●Do not top off the fuel tank.
NOTICE
■Refueling
Do not spill fuel during refueling. Doing so may damage the vehicle,
such as causing the emission control system to operate abnormally or dam-aging fuel system components or the
vehicle’s painted surface.

switches to Eco drive mode and the
Eco drive mode indicator illuminates on

2 Normal mode
Suitable for normal driving.
The driving mode returns to normal
mode if the switch is pressed while in
Eco drive mode or sport mode.
3 Sport mode
Controls the steering feeling and hybrid
system to create an acceleration
response that is suitable for sporty driv-
ing. Suitable for when crisp handling is
desired, such as when driving on
mountainous roads.
When the switch is turned to the right
while not in sport mode, the system
switches to sport mode and the sport
mode indicator illuminates on the multi-
information display.
■When changing to a driving mode
other than normal mode
●The background color of the multi-
information display changes accord- ing to the selected driving mode.
●When the speedometer is set to ana-log display, the speedometer display color also changes.
●The color of the switch changes according to the selected driving
mode. (On some models)
■Air conditioning system operation in Eco drive mode
In Eco drive mode, heating/cooling oper-
ations and the fan speed is controlled to improve fuel efficiency. Perform the fol-lowing procedures to increase the air
conditioning performance.
●Adjust the fan speed ( P.453)
●Cancel Eco drive mode
■Canceling a driving mode
●Sport mode is automatically canceled and the driving mode returns to nor-mal mode when the power switch is
turned off.
●Normal mode and Eco drive mode are

■If “Exhaust Filter Full See Owner’s
Manual” is shown on the multi- information display
●The message may be displayed while high load driving with particulate mat-ter accumulating.
●Hybrid system output (engine speed) is restricted when a certain amount of
particulate matter accumulates, how- ever, it is possible to drive the vehicle unless the malfunction indicator lamp
comes on.
●Particulate matter can accumulate
more quickly if the vehicle is fre- quently driven short trips or at low speeds, or if the hybrid system is reg-
ularly started in an extremely cold environment. Excessive accumula-
tion of particulate matter can be pre- vented by periodically driving long distances continuously with intermit-
tent releasing of the accelerator pedal, such as when driving on highways and freeways.
■If the malfunction indicator lamp
comes on or “Hybrid System Mal- function Output Power Reduced Visit Your Dealer” is shown on the
multi-information display
The amount of accumulated particulate matter has exceeded a certain level.
Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer immediately.
GPF (Gasoline Particu-
late Filter) system
The GPF system collects par-
ticulate matter in the exhaust
gas by using an exhaust gas
filter. The system will operate
to regenerate the filter auto-
matically, depending on the
vehicle conditions.
NOTICE
■To prevent the GPF system from not operating properly
●Do not use fuel other than the spec-ified type
●Do not modify the exhaust pipes

Driving
Vehicles with 225/60R18 tires
Use the correct tire chain size when
mounting the tire chains. Chain size
is regulated for each tire size.
Side chain:
3 mm (0.12 in.) in diameter
10 mm (0.39 in.) in width
30 mm (1.18 in.) in length
Cross chain:
4 mm (0.16 in.) in diameter
14 mm (0.55 in.) in width
25 mm (0.98 in.) in length
Vehicles with 235/55R19 tires
Tire chains cannot be mounted.
Snow tires should be used instead.
Regulations regarding the use of
tire chains vary depending on loca-
tion and type of road. Always check
local regulations before installing
chains.
■Tire chain installation
Observe the following precautions when installing and removing chains:
●Install and remove tire chains in a safe location.
●Install tire chains on the front tires only. Do not install tire chains on the rear tires.
●Install tire chains on front tires as tightly as possible. Retighten chains
after driving 0.5 - 1.0 km (1/4 - 1/2 mile).
●Install tire chains following the instruc-tions provided with the tire chains.
■Consumption of fuel and electricity
In cold temperatures, resistance of the
parts of a vehicle (transmission, tires, etc.) generally increases, resulting in increase of energy consumption. As a
result, fuel economy is likely to decrease.
Consumption of fuel and electricity of
this vehicle is also likely to become worse in cold temperatures.
