Using the system in recirculated air mode
The windows will fog up more easily if recirculated air mode is used for an
extended period of time.
When
is selected for the air outlets used
For your driving comfort, air flowing to the feet may be warmer than air flow-
ing to the upper body depending on the position of the temperature adjust-
ment dial.
When the indicator light on goes off by itself
(vehicles with
the button)
Press to turn off the cooling and dehumidification function and turn it
on again. There may be a problem in the air conditioning system if the indi-
cator light goes off again. Turn the air conditioning system off and have it
inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly quali-
fied and equipped professional.
When outside air temperature is decreased to around 0°C (32°F)
(vehi-
cles with the button)
The air conditioning system may not operate even when is pressed.
Air conditioning odors
During use, various odors from inside and outside the vehicle may enter
into and accumulate in the air conditioning system. This may then cause
odor to be emitted from the vents.
To reduce potential odors from occurring:
It is recommended that the air conditioning system be set to outside air
mode prior to turning the vehicle off.

Using the automatic mode

Adjusting the settings
Turning the cooling function on and off
Press .
The air conditioning system (cooling function) turns on and off each time
is pressed.
Adjusting the temperature setting
Press “” to increase the temperature and “” to decrease the tem-
perature on .
Adjusting the fan speed
Press “” (increase) or “” (decrease) on .
The fan speed is shown on the display. (7 levels)
Press to turn the fan off.
Changing the air outlets
Press .
The air outlets switch each time is pressed. The air flow shown
on the display indicates the following.
Air flows to the upper body.

Using the automatic mode
Fan speed is adjusted automatically in accordance with the temperature set-
ting and ambient conditions. As a result, the following may occur.
Immediately after
is pressed, the fan may stop for a while until
warm or cool air is ready to flow.
Cool air may flow to the area around the upper body when the heater is
on.
Switching between outside air and recirculated air modes
Recirculated air mode or outside air mode may be automatically switched to
in accordance with the temperature setting and the inside temperature.
Using the system in recirculated air mode
The windows will fog up more easily if recirculated air mode is used.
Window defogger feature
Recirculated air mode may automatically switch to
(outside air)
mode in situations where the windows need to be defogged.

CAUTION
When working near the electric cooling fans or radiator grille
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: Be sure the engine switch is
off. With the engine switch in the “ON” position, the electric cooling fans may
automatically start to run if the air conditioning is on and/or the coolant tem-
perature is high. (P. 377)
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system: Be sure the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch is off. With the “ENGINE START STOP” switch in IGNITION
ON mode, the electric cooling fans may automatically start to run if the air
conditioning is on and/or the coolant temperature is high. (P. 377)
Safety glasses
Wear safety glasses to prevent flying or falling material, fluid spray, etc. from
getting in your eyes.
NOTICE
If you remove the air cleaner filter
Driving with the air cleaner filter removed may cause excessive engine wear
due to dirt in the air.
If the fluid level is low or high
It is normal for the brake fluid level to go down slightly as the brake pads
wear or when the fluid level in the accumulator is high.
If the reservoir needs frequent refilling, it may indicate a serious problem.

Coolant selection
Only use “Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” or a similar high quality ethylene
glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, and non-borate coolant
with long-life hybrid organic acid technology.
“Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 50% coolant and 50%
deionized water. (Minimum temperature: -35C [-31F])
For more details about engine coolant, contact any authorized Toyota dealer
or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
If the coolant level drops within a short time of replenishing
Visually check the radiator, hoses, engine coolant reservoir cap, drain cock
and water pump.
If you cannot find a leak, have any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional, test the cap and check for
leaks in the cooling system.
CAUTION
When the engine is hot
Do not remove the engine coolant reservoir cap.
The cooling system may be under pressure and may spray hot coolant if the
cap is removed, causing serious injuries, such as burns.
NOTICE
When adding coolant
Coolant is neither plain water nor straight antifreeze. The correct mixture of
water and antifreeze must be used to provide proper lubrication, corrosion
protection and cooling. Be sure to read the antifreeze or coolant label.
If you spill coolant
Be sure to wash it off with water to prevent it from damaging parts or paint.
