Installation of a mobiletwoway radio system
As the installation of a mobile two −way radio system in
your vehicle could affect electronic systems such as the
multiport fuel injection system/sequential multiport fuel
injection system, cruise control system, anti −lock brake
system, traction control system, vehicle stability control
system, SRS airbag system and seat belt pretensioner
system, be sure to check with your Scion dealer for
precautionary measures or special instructions regarding
installation.
Tires and loading on your Scion
Underinflated or overinflated tire pressure and the
excess load may result in the deterioration of
steering ability and braking ability, leading to an
accident. Check the tire inflation pressure periodi-
cally and be sure to keep the load limits given in
this Owner ’s Manual. For details about tire inflation
pressure and load limits, see page 260 and pages
191 through 193.

The light may occasionally flicker when
the engine is idling or it may come on
briefly after a hard stop. There is no
cause for concern if it then goes out when
the engine is accelerated slightly.
The light may come on when the oil level
is extremely low. It is not designed to
indicate low oil level, and the oil level
must be checked using the level dipstick.
NOTICE
Do not drive the vehicle with the
warning light on—even for one block.
It may ruin the engine.
(i) “ABS” Warning Light
The light comes on when the engine
switch is turned to the “ON” position. If
the anti−lock brake system and the brake
assist system work properly, the light
turns off after a few seconds. Thereafter,
if the system malfunctions, the light
comes on again.
When the “ABS” warning light is on (and
the brake system warning light is off), the
anti −lock brake system, the brake assist
system, the traction control system and
the vehicle stability control system do not
operate, but the brake system still oper-
ates conventionally. When the “ABS” warning light is on (and
the brake system warning light is off), the
anti
−lock brake system does not operate
so that the wheels could lock up during
sudden braking or braking on slippery
road surfaces.
If either of the following conditions
occurs, this indicates a malfunction
somewhere in the components moni-
tored by the warning light system.
Contact your Scion dealer as soon as
possible to service the vehicle.
When the engine switch is turned to
the “ON” position, the light does not
come on or remains on.
The light comes on while you are driv-
ing.
A warning light turning on briefly during
operation does not indicate a problem.
CAUTION
If the “ABS” warning light remains on
together with the brake system warn-
ing light, immediately stop your ve-
hicle at a safe place and contact your
Scion dealer.
In this case, not only the antilock
brake system will fail but also the ve-
hicle will become extremely unstable
during braking.
(j) Open Door Warning Light
This light remains on until all the side
doors and back door are completely
closed.

CAUTION
If the electric power steering system
warning light comes on, take your ve-
hicle to your Scion dealer as soon as
possible. In this case, more effort is
required for the steering wheel to
turn than usual. Drive your vehicle
while firmly gripping the steering
wheel.
(n) Slip indicator Light
The light will come on when the engine
switch is turned to the “ON” position, and
will go off after a few seconds.
The light blinks while the vehicle stability
control system or traction control system
is operating.
The light will come on if the vehicle stabil-
ity control system or traction control sys-
tem malfunction during normal driving.
If the light comes on while you are driv-
ing, the vehicle stability control system
and/or traction control system do not
work. However, as conventional braking
operates when applied, there is no prob-
lem to continue your driving.
In the following cases, contact your Scion
dealer:
When the engine switch is turned to
the “ON” position, the light does not
come on or remains on.
The light comes on while you are driv-
ing.(o) Tire Pressure Warning Light
This light comes on when the engine
switch is turned to the “ON” position. If
the tire pressure warning system works
properly and tire inflation pressure is ap-
propriate, the light goes off after a few
seconds.
This light comes on or flashes in the fol-
lowing cases when the engine switch is
turned to the “ON” position.
When the low tire inflation pressure
is detected while driving...
If any tire has low inflation pressure,
the light comes on.
The light goes off after the tire inflation
pressure is adjusted to a specified lev-
el.
When initializing the system...
When ready to be initialized, the light
blinks three times.
When the system malfunctions...
If the system malfunctions, the light
comes on after blinking for 1 minute.
Although it is no problem to continue
driving, have your vehicle checked by
your Scion dealer as soon as possible.

The traction control system automatical-
ly helps prevent the spinning of the
front wheels when the vehicle is started
or accelerated on slippery road sur-
faces.
When the engine switch is turned to “ON”
position, the system automatically turns
on.
CAUTION
Under certain slippery road condi-
tions, full traction of the vehicle and
power against front wheels cannot be
maintained, even though the traction
control system is in operation. Do not
drive the vehicle under any speed or
maneuvering conditions which may
cause the vehicle to lose traction
control. In situations where the road
surface is covered with ice or snow,
your vehicle should be fitted with
snow tires or tire chains. Always
drive at an appropriate and cautious
speed for the present road condi-
tions.
NORMAL DRIVING MODE
Leave the system on during ordinary
driving so that it can operate when
needed.
You may hear a sound in the engine
compartment for a few seconds just after
the vehicle begins to move. This means
that the traction control system is in the
self−check mode, but does not indicate a
malfunction. When the traction control system is oper-
ating, the following conditions occur:
The system controls the spinning of the
front wheels. At this time, the slip indi-
cator light blinks.
You may feel vibration or noise in your
vehicle, caused by operation of the
brakes. This indicates the system is
functioning properly.
The slip indicator light comes on for a few
seconds when the engine switch is turned
to “ON” position. If the indicator light does
not come on when the engine switch is
turned on, contact your Scion dealer.

TRACTION CONTROL OFF MODE
If your wheels get stuck in a ditch
when you are driving on a severe off
road or sand, turn off the traction con-
trol system or vehicle stability control
system. (See page 132 to turn off the
vehicle stability control system.) These
systems control engine performance
that interferes with the process of free-
ing your wheels.

To turn off: Push VSC OFF switch brief-
ly.
The “TRAC OFF” indicator light will come
on.
When the engine switch is turned to “ON”
position, the traction control system and
vehicle stability control system always turn
on.
The traction control system turns back on
when the vehicle reaches to the certain
speed.
To turn on: Push VSC OFF switch once
again.
The “TRAC OFF” indicator light will go off.
CAUTION
When the traction control and vehicle
stability control systems are off, be
especially careful and drive at a
speed appropriate to the road condi-
tions. As these are systems to ensure
vehicle stability and driving force, do
not turn off the traction control and
vehicle stability control systems un-
less necessary.
In the following cases, contact your Scion
dealer:
The “TRAC OFF” indicator light does
not come on when the engine switch
is turned to “ON” position.
The “TRAC OFF” indicator light re-
mains on after the engine switch is
turned to “ON” position.
The slip indicator light comes on in the
normal driving mode while driving.

VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL OFF
MODE
If your wheels get stuck in a ditch
when you are driving on a severe off
road or sand, turn off the traction con-
trol system or vehicle stability control
system. (See page 130 to turn off the
traction control system). These systems
control engine performance that inter-
feres with the process of freeing your
wheels.
To turn off: Push and hold the VSC
OFF switch for 3 seconds when the ve-
hicle is not moving.
The “TRAC OFF” indicator light and VSC
OFF indicator light will come on.
When the engine switch is turned to “ON”
position, the traction control system and
vehicle stability control system always turn
on.
To turn on: Push the VSC OFF switch
once again.
The “TRAC OFF” indicator light and VSC
OFF indicator light will go off.
CAUTION
When the traction control and vehicle
stability control systems are off, be
especially careful and drive at a
speed appropriate to the road condi-
tions. As these are systems to ensure
vehicle stability and driving force, do
not turn off the traction control and
vehicle stability control systems un-
less necessary.

—Uniform Tire Quality Grading
This information has been prepared
in accordance with regulations issued
by the National Highway Traffic Safe-
ty Administration of the U.S. Depart-
ment of Transportation. It provides
the purchasers and/or prospective
purchasers of Scion vehicles with in-
formation on uniform tire quality grad-
ing.
Your Scion dealer will help answer
any questions you may have as you
read this information.
DOT quality grades—All passenger
vehicle tires must conform to Fed-
eral Safety Requirements in addi-
tion to these grades. Quality
grades can be found where appli-
cable on the tire sidewall between
tread shoulder and maximum sec-
tion width.
For example:
Treadwear 200 Traction AA
Temperature ATreadwear—
The treadwear grade is
a comparative rating based on the
wear rate of the tire when tested un-
der controlled conditions on a speci-
fied government test course. For ex-
ample, a tire graded 150 would wear
one and a half (1 −1/2) times as well
on the government course as a tire
graded 100. The relative performance
of tires depends upon the actual
conditions of their use, however, and
may depart significantly from the
norm due to variations in driving hab-
its, service practices and differences
in road characteristics and climate. Traction AA, A, B, C—
The traction
grades, from highest to lowest, are
AA, A, B, and C, and they represent
the tire’s ability to stop on wet pave-
ment as measured under controlled
conditions on specified government
test surfaces of asphalt and concrete.
A tire marked C may have poor trac-
tion performance.
Warning: The traction grade assigned
to this tire is based on braking
(straight ahead) traction tests and
does not include cornering (turning)
traction.

2. All season tires
All season tires are designed to pro-
vide better traction in snow and to be
adequate for driving in most winter
conditions, as well as for use all year
round.
All season tires, however, do not have
adequate traction performance
compared with snow tires in heavy or
loose snow. Also, all season tires fall
short in acceleration and handling
performance compared with summer
tires in highway driving.
The details about how to distinguish
summer tires from all season tires are
described on page 177.
CAUTION
 Do not mix summer and all sea-
son tires on your vehicle as
this can cause dangerous han-
dling characteristics, resulting
in loss of control.
 Do not use tires other than the
manufacturer’s designated
tires, and do not mix tires or
wheels of the sizes different
from the originally equipped
tires and wheels.

When rotating tires, check for uneven
wear and damage. Abnormal wear is
usually caused by incorrect tire infla-
tion pressure, improper wheel align-
ment, out
−of −balance wheels, or se-
vere braking.
CAUTION
Do not include a compact spare
tire when rotating the tires. It is
designed for temporary use only.
The tire pressure warning system
must be initialized when rotating tires,
in case that specified tire inflation
pressure is different between front
and rear.
WHEN TO USE SNOW TIRES OR
CHAINS
Snow tires or chains are recommended
when driving on snow or ice.
On wet or dry roads, conventional tires
provide better traction than snow tires.
SNOW TIRE SELECTION
If you need snow tires, select tires of
the same size, construction and load
capacity as the originally installed tires.
Do not use tires other than those men-
tioned above. Do not install studded tires
without first checking local regulations for
possible restrictions.
CAUTION
Do not use snow tires other than the
manufacturer ’s recommended size, as
this may cause dangerous handling
characteristics resulting in loss of
control. Otherwise, an accident may
occur resulting in death or serious
injuries.
SNOW TIRE INSTALLATION
Snow tires should be installed on all
wheels.
Installing snow tires on the front wheels
only can lead to an excessive difference
in road grip capability between the front
and rear tires which could cause loss of
vehicle control.
When storing removed tires you should
store them in a cool dry place.
Mark the direction of rotation and be sure
to install them in the same direction when
replacing.
CAUTION
Do not drive with the snow tires
incorrectly inflated.
Never drive over 120 km/h (75 mph)
with any type of snow tires.
