If the hybrid system does not start
The immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. (P. 155)
Contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified
and equipped professional.
Steering lock
After turning the “POWER” switch off and opening and closing the doors, the
steering wheel will be locked due to the steering lock function. Operating the
“POWER” switch again automatically cancels the steering lock.
When the steering lock cannot be released
Steering lock motor overheating prevention
To prevent the steering lock motor from overheating, the motor may be sus-
pended if the hybrid system is turned on and off repeatedly in a short period
of time. In this case, refrain from operating the hybrid system. After about 10
seconds, the steering lock motor will resume functioning.
Check that the shift lever is securely set
in P. The hybrid system may not start if
the shift lever is displaced out of P. The
smart entry & start system indicator light
(green) will flash quickly.

If the engine will not start (except hybrid vehicle)
If the engine will not start even though correct starting procedures
are being followed (P. 224, 228), consider each of the following
points:
The engine will not start even though the starter motor
operates normally.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Gasoline engine: Refuel the vehicle.
Diesel engine: (P. 644)
The engine may be flooded. (gasoline engine)
Try to restart the engine again following correct starting proce-
dures. (P. 224, 228)
There may be a malfunction in the engine immobilizer system.
(P. 155)
The starter motor turns over slowly, the interior lights and
headlights are dim, or the horn does not sound or sounds at
a low volume.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
The battery may be discharged. (P. 624)
The battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.
The starter motor does not turn over. (vehicles with a smart
entry & start system)
The engine starting system may be malfunctioning due to an
electrical problem such as an open circuit or a blown fuse. How-
ever, an interim measure is available to start the engine.

If the hybrid system will not start (hybrid vehicle)
Reasons for the hybrid system not starting vary depending on the
situation. Check the following and perform the appropriate proce-
dure:
The hybrid system will not start even though the correct
starting procedure is being followed. (P. 238, 243)
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
Vehicles with an electronic key: The electronic key may not be
functioning properly. (P. 619)
There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle. (P. 151)
There may be a malfunction in the immobilizer system.
(P. 155)
There may be a malfunction in the steering lock system.
The hybrid system may be malfunctioning due to an electrical
problem such as an open circuit or a blown fuse. However,
depending on the type of malfunction, an interim measure is
available to start the hybrid system. (P. 615)
The interior lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does
not sound or sounds at a low volume.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
The 12-volt battery may be discharged. (P. 631)
The 12-volt battery terminal connections may be loose or cor-
roded.
