Overheating
If you observe the following, your vehicle may be overheating:
The high engine coolant temperature warning light flashes or comes on
or a loss of power is experienced.
Steam comes out from under the hood.
CAUTION
To prevent an accident or injury when inspecting under the hood of
your vehicle
If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the hood until
the steam has subsided. The engine compartment may be very hot, caus-
ing serious injuries such as burns.
Keep hands and clothing away from the fan and drive belt while the engine
is running.
Do not loosen the radiator cap, or the coolant reservoir cap while the
engine and radiator are hot.
Serious injury, such as burns, may result from hot coolant and steam
released under pressure.
Diesel engine
Have the vehicle inspected at the nearest authorized Toyota dealer
or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional as
soon as possible.

NOTICE
When adding engine coolant
Wait until the engine has cooled down before adding engine coolant.
When adding coolant, do so slowly. Adding cool coolant to a hot engine too
quickly can cause damage to the engine.

If your vehicle overheats (hybrid vehicle)
Correction procedures
If the high engine coolant temperature warning light comes on
or flashes
Stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn off the air condition-
ing system.
Check to see if steam is coming out from the engine area.
If you see steam:
Stop the hybrid system. Carefully lift the hood after the steam
subsides and then restart the hybrid system.
If you do not see steam:
Leave the hybrid system operating and carefully lift the hood.
Check to see if the cooling fan is operating.
If the fan is operating:
Wait until the high engine coolant temperature warning light
goes off and then stop the hybrid system.
If the fan is not operating:
Stop the hybrid system immediately and call any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.
The following may indicate that your vehicle is overheating:
The high engine coolant temperature warning light comes on or
flashes:
The engine may be overheating.
If the hybrid system overheat warning light comes on:
The power control unit may be overheating.
Follow the correction procedure as described below.

Overheating
The following symptoms may occur when your vehicle is overheating:
Hybrid system output decreases.
Steam comes out from the engine area.
CAUTION
To prevent an accident or injury when inspecting under the hood of
your vehicle
If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the hood until
the steam has subsided. The engine compartment may be very hot, caus-
ing serious injuries such as burns.
Check that the “READY” indicator is off.
For vehicles with a hybrid system, there are times when the gasoline
engine automatically starts to run or the cooling fan suddenly start to oper-
ate. Do not touch or approach the rotating parts of the belt or fan. Doing so
may lead to fingers, clothes or tools getting caught, resulting in injury.
Do not loosen the coolant reservoir cap while the hybrid system and radia-
tor are hot.
Serious injuries, such as burns, may result from hot coolant and steam
released under pressure.

When adding engine/power control unit coolant
Wait until the hybrid system has cooled down before adding engine/power
control unit coolant.
When adding coolant, do so slowly. Adding cool coolant to a hot hybrid sys-
tem too quickly can cause damage to the hybrid system.
To prevent damage to the cooling system
Observe the following precautions:
Avoid contaminating the coolant with foreign matter (such as sand or dust
etc.)
Do not use commercially available coolant additives

If you run out of fuel and the engine stalls (diesel engine only)
If you run out of fuel and the engine stalls:
Refuel your vehicle.
Pull the rubber strip on the edge to unhook it from the
cover, and then push the tabs in and lift the cover off.
Left-hand drive vehicles
Right-hand drive vehicles

NOTICE
When restarting the engine
Do not crank the engine before refueling and operating the priming pump.
This may damage the engine and fuel system.
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: Do not crank the engine for
more than 30 seconds at a time. This may overheat the starter and wiring
system.
Start the engine. (P. 224, 228)
If the engine does not start after the above steps have been per-
formed, wait for 10 seconds and then try steps 3 and 5 again. If
the engine still does not start, contact any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped profes-
sional.
After starting the engine, depress the accelerator pedal lightly until
the engine runs smoothly.

If the vehicle becomes stuck
Carry out the following procedures if the tires spin or the vehicle
becomes stuck in mud, dirt or snow:
Vehicles with a hybrid transmission or a Multidrive: Stop the
engine (except hybrid vehicle) or hybrid system (hybrid
vehicle). Set the parking brake and shift the shift lever to P.
Vehicles with a multi-mode manual transmission or a man-
ual transmission: Stop the engine. Set the parking brake
and shift the shift lever to N.
Remove the mud, snow or sand from around the front
wheels.
Place wood, stones or some other material under the front
wheels to help provide traction.
Restart the engine (except hybrid vehicle) or hybrid system
(hybrid vehicle).
Vehicles with a hybrid transmission or a Multidrive: Shift the
shift lever to the D or R and carefully apply the accelerator
to free the vehicle.
Vehicles with a multi-mode manual transmission: Shift the
shift lever to E, M or R and carefully apply the accelerator to
free the vehicle.
Vehicles with a manual transmission: Shift the shift lever to
1 or R and carefully apply the accelerator to free the vehi-
cle.
