Hybrid battery air vent
There is an air intake vent on the
side of the lower part of the rear
left seat for the purpose of cool-
ing the hybrid battery (traction
battery). If the vent becomes
blocked, the hybrid battery (trac-
tion battery) may overheat, lead-
ing to a reduction in hybrid
battery output.
Emergency shut off system
When a certain level of impact is detected by the impact sensor, the
emergency shut off system blocks off the high voltage current and
stops the fuel pump to minimize the risk of electrocution and fuel
leakage. If the emergency shut off system activates, your vehicle will
not restart. To restart the hybrid system, contact any authorized Toy-
ota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped profes-
sional.
If a warning light comes on, or the 12-volt battery is disconnected
The hybrid system may not start. In that case, try to start the system again. If
the “READY” indicator does not come on, contact any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
Running out of fuel
When the vehicle has run out of fuel and the hybrid system cannot be
started, refuel the vehicle with at least enough gasoline to make the low fuel
level warning light (P. 566) go off. If there is only a small amount of fuel,
the hybrid system may not be able to start. (The minimum amount of fuel to
add to make the low fuel level warning light go out is about 7.0 L [1.8 gal.,
1.5 lmp. gal.] when the vehicle is on a level surface. This value may vary
when the vehicle is on a slope.)

Operation signals
The emergency flashers flash to indicate that the doors have been locked/
unlocked. (Locked: once; Unlocked: twice)
When the door cannot be locked by the lock sensor
Alarms and warning indicators
A combination of exterior and interior alarms as well as warning lights are
used to prevent theft of the vehicle and unforeseeable accidents resulting
from erroneous operation. Take appropriate measures for the warning light
that comes on. (P. 571)
The following table describes circumstances and correction procedures
when only alarms are sounded.

Note for the push-button start system
Even when the electronic key is within the effective range (detection
areas), the system may not operate properly.
For example, the electronic key is on the instrument panel, luggage
cover, floor or in the glove box when the hybrid system is started or
“POWER” switch modes are changed.
Even if the electronic key is not inside the vehicle, it may be possible to
start the hybrid system if the electronic key is near the window.
To operate the system properly
Make sure to carry the electronic key when operating the system.
Depending on the position and holding condition of the electronic key, the
key may not be detected correctly and the system may not operate properly.
(The alarm may go off accidentally, or the door lock prevention may not func-
tion.)

CAUTION
When children are in the vehicle
Do not allow children to play with the seat belt. If the seat belt becomes
twisted around a child’s neck, it may lead to choking or other serious injuries
that could result in death.
If this occurs and the buckle cannot be unfastened, scissors should be used
to cut the belt.
Seat belt pretensioners
Do not place anything, such as a cushion, on the front passenger’s seat.
The seat belt pretensioner for the front passenger’s seat may not activate
in the event of a collision.
If the pretensioner has activated, the SRS warning light will come on. In
that case, the seat belt cannot be used again and must be replaced at any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.
Seat belt damage and wear
Do not damage the seat belts by allowing the belt, plate, or buckle to be
jammed in the door.
Inspect the seat belt system periodically. Check for cuts, fraying, and loose
parts. Do not use a damaged seat belt until it is replaced. Damaged seat
belts cannot protect an occupant from death or serious injury.
Ensure that the belt and plate are locked and the belt is not twisted.
If the seat belt does not function correctly, immediately contact any autho-
rized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped pro-
fessional.
Replace the seat assembly, including the belts, if your vehicle has been
involved in a serious accident, even if there is no obvious damage.
Do not attempt to install, remove, modify, disassemble or dispose of the
seat belts. Have any necessary repairs carried out by any authorized Toy-
ota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
Inappropriate handling of the pretensioner may prevent it from operating
properly, resulting in death or serious injury.

SRS airbag system components
The main SRS airbag system components are shown above. The
SRS airbag system is controlled by the airbag sensor assembly. As
the airbags deploy, a chemical reaction in the inflators quickly fills the
airbags with non-toxic gas to help restrain the motion of the occu-

CAUTION
When braking
When the brakes are wet, drive more cautiously.
Braking distance increases when the brakes are wet, and this may cause
one side of the vehicle to brake differently than the other side. Also, the
parking brake may not securely hold the vehicle.
If the brake actuator (hybrid vehicle) or brake booster (except hybrid vehi-
cle) does not operate, do not follow other vehicles closely and avoid hills
or sharp turns that require braking.
In this case, braking is still possible, but the brake pedal should be
depressed more firmly than usual. Also, the braking distance will increase.
Do not pump the brake pedal if the engine stalls.
Each push on the brake pedal uses up the reserve for the power-assisted
brakes.
Except hybrid vehicle: The brake system consists of 2 individual hydraulic
systems; if one of the systems fails, the other will still operate. In this case,
the brake pedal should be depressed more firmly than usual and the brak-
ing distance will increase. If this happens, do not continue to drive the
vehicle. Have your brakes fixed immediately.
Hybrid vehicle: The brake system consists of 2 individual hydraulic sys-
tems; if one of the systems fails, the others will still operate. In this case,
the brake pedal should be depressed more firmly than usual and the brak-
ing distance will increase. If this happens, do not continue to drive the
vehicle. If the brake system warning light (red indicator) comes on together
with the buzzer sound while driving, immediately stop the vehicle in a safe
place and contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional.

NOTICE
To prevent damage to the engine and its components
Vehicles with a tachometer: Do not let the indicator needle of the tachome-
ter enter the red zone, which indicates the maximum engine speed.
The engine may be overheating if the high engine coolant temperature
warning light flashes or turns on. In this case, immediately stop the vehicle
in a safe place, and check the engine after it has cooled completely.
