Saving Fuel and Protection of the Environment
How you operate your Toyota determines how far it will travel on a
tank of fuel. Use these suggestions to help save fuel and reduce CO2.
• Avoid long warm-ups. Once the en gine runs smoothly, begin driv-
ing.
• Avoid fast starts.
• Drive at lower speeds.
• Anticipate when to apply the brakes (avoid sudden braking).
• Follow the maintenance schedule and have your Toyota dealer per- form inspections and servicing.
• Use the air conditioner only when necessary.
• Slow down on rough roads.
• Keep the tires properly inflated.
• Do not carry unnecessary weight.
• Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal while driving.
• Keep the wheels in correct alignment.
• Keep windows closed at high speeds.
• Slow down when driving in crosswinds and headwinds.
WARNING
■ Never stop the engine when going down a hill
Stopping the engine when going down a hill is dangerous. This causes the
loss of power steering and power brake control, and may cause damage to
the drivetrain. Any loss of steering or braking control could cause an acci-
dent.

3-1. Start/Stop Engine
Ignition Switch
The system operates only when the driver is in the vehicle or within
operational range while the key is being carried.
Each time the push button start is
pressed, the ignition switches in
the order of off, ACC, and ON.
Pressing the push button start
again from ON switches the igni-
tion off.
■Off
The power supply to electrical devices turns off and the push button
start indicator light (amber) also turns off.
In this position the steering wheel is locked.
■ACC (Accessory)
Some electrical accessories will operate and the indicator light
(amber) illuminates.
■ON
This is the normal running position after the engine is started. The
indicator light (amber) turns off. (The indicator light (amber) illumi-
nates when the ignition is switched ON and the engine is not run-
ning.)
Some indicator lights/warning li ghts should be inspected before the
engine is started ( →P. 156).

When Driving
These lights turn on or flash to notify the user of the system operation
status or a system malfunction.
*1: The light turns on when the ignition is switched on for an operation chec\
k, and turns off a few seconds later or when the engine is started. If the light
does not turn on or remains turned on, have the vehicle inspected at your
Toyota dealer.
*2: The light turns on continuously when the parking brake is applied.

3-3. Transaxle
■Passing
For extra power when passing another vehicle or climbing steep
grades, depress the accelerator fully. The transaxle will shift to a
lower gear, depending on vehicle speed.
Some models:
The accelerator pedal may initially feel heavy as it is being depressed,
then feel lighter as it is depressed further. This change in pedal force
aids the engine control system in determining how much the accelerator
pedal has been depressed for performing kickdown, and functions to
control whether or not kickdown should be performed.
■
Climbing steep grades from a stop
To climb a steep grade from a stopped position:
Depress the brake pedal.
Shift to D or M1, depending on the load weight and grade steep-
ness.
Release the brake pedal while gradually accelerating.
■Descending steep grades
When descending a steep grade, shift to lower gears, depending on
load weight and grade steepness. Descend slowly, using the
brakes only occasionally to pr event them from overheating.
Driving Tips
WARNING
■Do not let the vehicle move in a di rection opposite to the direction
selected by the selector lever
Do not let the vehicle move backward with the selector lever in a forward
position, or do not let the vehicle move forward with the selector lever in the
reverse position. Otherwise, the engine may stop, causing the loss of the
power brake and power steering functions , and make it difficult to control
the vehicle which could result in an accident.

When Driving
Power Steering
• Power steering is only operable when the engine is running. If theengine is off or if the power steeri ng system is inoperable, you can
still steer, but it requires more physical effort.
If the steering feels stiffer than usual during normal driving or the
steering vibrates, consul t your Toyota dealer.
• The warning light notifies the dr iver of system abnormalities and
operation conditions.
In addition, the buzzer may also activate depending on the system
abnormality or operation condition.

NOTICE
Never hold the steering wheel to the extreme left or right for more than 5
seconds with the engine running. This could damage the power steering
system.

Interior Features
■Microphone (hands-free)
The microphone is used for speaking voice commands or when
making a Hands-free call.
■Talk button, Pick-Up button and Hang-Up button (hands-free)
The basic functions of Bluetooth
® Hands-Free can be used for such
things as making calls or hanging up using the talk, pick-up and
hang-up buttons on the steering wheel.
■Commander switch (Type B)
The commander switch is used for volume adjustment and display
operation. Tilt or turn the commander knob to move the cursor.
Press the commander knob to select the icon.
■Volume adjustment
The power/volume dial of the audio unit
*1 or the volume dial of the
commander switch
*2 is used to adjust the volume. Turn the dial to
the right to increase volume, to the left to decrease it.
The volume can also be adjusted using the volume button on the
steering wheel.
If the volume is lower compared to other audio modes, increase the vol-
ume from the device side.
Type B only:
Conversation volume and the vo lume of the voice guidance and
ringtone can each be set in advance.
Select the icon on the home screen and display the Com-
munication screen.
