d Make sure that the floormat on the driver side is properly fastened and cannot interfere with the pedals.
d Assume a proper seating position before the vehicle starts to move and keep this position while
driving. Make sure that all passengers do the same ⇒Adjusting the seating position.
d Properly fasten your safety belt before driving the vehicle and wear your safety belt properly at all
times while driving. Make sure that all passengers do the same ⇒  Safety belts.
d Only transport as many passengers as there are seats and safety belts available.
d Never drive if your driving ability has been impaired, for example, by medication, alcohol, or illegal drugs.
d Never let passengers or phone calls distract you while driving and never take your attention off the road while using vehicle software or adjusting vehicle equipment or accessories.
d Always adapt your speed and driving style to visibility, weather, road, and traffic conditions.
d Always obey traffic laws and speed limits.
d On long trips make frequent rest stops – at least once every 2 hours.
d Secure animals in the vehicle with a system that corresponds to their weight and size.
WARNING
Always observe traffic rules and posted speed limits and use common sense. Your good judgment can mean the difference between arriving safely at your destination and being seri-ously injured in a crash or other kind of accident.
Regular service and maintenance of your vehicle is important both for operational and driving safety and to help prolong your vehicle's service life. Always follow the scheduled maintenance inter-
vals in the ⇒ Booklet Warranty and Maintenance, especially for changing the brake fluid. Hard use, frequent stop-and-go driving, driving in very dusty areas, trailer towing, and other factors may make it necessary to have the vehicle serviced more frequently. Ask an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility for more information.
Driving in other countries

To remove the storage compartment ⇒ fig. 37 B (1), pull it out of the brackets in the direction of the arrow.
To install the storage compartment ⇒ fig. 37 B (1), slide it into the brackets opposite the direction of the arrow.
WARNING
Installing or removing the wind blocker by the side of the road near moving traffic can cause accidents and serious personal injuries.
x Always park the vehicle a safe distance from moving traffic when installing or removing the wind blocker.
x Never install or remove the wind blocker while driving.
WARNING
Incorrect seating positions in the vehicle increase the risk of serious of fatal injuries in the event of an accident or sudden driving and braking maneuvers.
x Never let anyone sit on the rear seats when the wind blocker is installed.
WARNING
Unsecured or improperly secured objects can cause severe injuries during sudden braking maneuvers or if the vehicle is involved in an accident while driving.
x Never place unsecured objects underneath the wind blocker.
x Never use the wind blocker as a storage shelf. Items on the wind blocker can be thrown around inside the vehicle by the wind and cause injuries.
x Never use the wind blocker to secure objects.
WARNING
Always make sure that hands, fingers, and other parts of the body are out of the way when moving the wind blocker up or down, or when folding it together.
x Never fold the wind blocker upward while driving.
NOTICE
x Always store the wind blocker in its storage compartment when not in use.
x Do not store any other objects in the wind blocker storage compartment.

Installing and removing the wind blocker

The wind blocker, if equipped, is in a storage compartment in the vehicle's luggage compartment.
You can close the convertible top even when the wind blocker is installed.
Unfolding the wind blocker
Folding the wind blocker outward before installing it is the easiest way to get it into the correct position for installation.
x Remove the wind blocker from the luggage compartment ⇒  Removing the wind blocker from the luggage compartment and storing.
x Fold both side sections outward in the direction of the arrows ⇒ fig. 38 until they lock into place.
Installing the wind blocker
The wind blocker is installed correctly when the longer side faces toward the front and the wind block-er frame is on top.
x Insert both pins on the driver side of the wind blocker into the holes in the side trim panel above the
rear seats ⇒ fig. 39 A (1) (magnified area).
x Fold the handle ⇒ fig. 39 B (4) at the front center of the wind blocker upward in the direction of the arrow and hold it in place.
x Pull the section of the wind blocker that is facing the front passenger side upward slightly.

x Insert both pins on the wind blocker on the front passenger side into the holes in the side trim
panel above the rear seats ⇒ fig. 39 B (2) (magnified area).
x Press down lightly on the center of the wind blocker ⇒ fig. 39 B (3) until it locks into place.
x Pull the top section of the wind blocker upward so it contacts the stops and snaps into place.
Removing the wind blocker
x Fold the upper section of the wind blocker down toward the rear of the vehicle.
x Fold the handle ⇒ fig. 39 B (4) at the front center of the wind blocker upward in the direction of the arrow and hold it in place.
x Pull the center of the wind blocker upward opposite the direction of the arrow ⇒ fig. 39 B (3).
x Remove both wind blocker retaining pins on the front passenger side from the holes in the side trim
panel opposite the direction of the arrows ⇒ fig. 39 B (2).
x Remove both wind blocker retaining pins on the driver side from the holes in the side trim panel
opposite the direction of the arrows ⇒ fig. 39 A (1).
Closing the wind blocker
x Fold the handle ⇒ fig. 39 B (4) at the front center of the wind blocker upward in the direction of the arrow and hold it in place.
x Fold both side sections inward opposite the direction of the arrow ⇒ fig. 38.
x Store the wind blocker in the luggage compartment ⇒  Removing the wind blocker from the lug-gage compartment and storing.

x When moving a front seat forward or back, make sure the backrest does not press against the wind blocker. This can damage the wind blocker, especially its locking mechanism.
x Always store the wind blocker in its storage compartment when not in use.
x Never put objects (luggage, grocery bags, etc.) on top of the wind blocker.
Installing and removing the convertible top cover (boot)

Your vehicle may be equipped with a convertible top cover (boot) that fits over the convertible top when it is down.
Installing the convertible top cover
x Remove the convertible top cover from the luggage compartment.
x Unfold the convertible top cover and lay it over the open top.
x Snap the clips on either side of the convertible top cover ⇒ fig. 40 A (1) into place on the rear side of the trim panels above the rear seats.
x Insert each interior side of the convertible top cover ⇒ fig. 40 A (arrows), behind the trim panels.
x Insert the front area of the convertible top cover ⇒ fig. 40 A (2) behind the Automatic Rollover Support System.
x Pull the cover over the convertible top.
x Insert the rear area of the convertible top cover ⇒ fig. 40 B (3) next to the seal above the luggage compartment lid until the edge of the convertible top cover is completely tucked under the seal and the seam is no longer visible.
x Press the left and right sides of the cover into the retainer completely ⇒ fig. 40 B (4).

WARNING
Always adjust seat, safety belts, and head restraints properly before driving and make sure that all passengers are properly restrained.
x Push the passenger seat as far back as possible. Always be sure that there are at least 10 inches (25 cm) between the front passenger's breastbone and the instrument panel.
x Always adjust the driver's seat and the steering wheel so that there are at least 10 inches (25 cm) between your breastbone and the steering wheel.
x Adjust the driver's seat so that you can easily push the pedals all the way to the floor while keeping your knee(s) slightly bent. The distance to the instrument panel in the knee area must be at least 4 inches (10 cm).
x If these requirements cannot be met for physical reasons, contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility to see whether adaptive equipment is available.
x Always hold the steering wheel on the outside of the steering wheel rim with your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions to help reduce the risk of personal injury if the driv-er's airbag inflates.
x Never hold the steering wheel at the 12 o'clock position or with your hands at other places inside the steering wheel rim or on the steering wheel hub. Holding the steering wheel the wrong way can cause serious injuries to the hands, arms, and head if the driver's airbag in-flates.
x Pointing the steering wheel toward your face decreases the ability of the driver's airbag to help protect you in a collision.
x Never drive with backrests reclined or tilted back farther than necessary to drive comfort-ably. The farther back the backrests are tilted, the greater the risk of injury caused by incor-rect positioning of the safety belts and improper seating position.
x Never drive with the front seat passenger backrest tilted forward. If the front airbag de-ploys, the front backrest can be forced backward and injure passengers on the rear seat.
x Sit as far back as possible from the steering wheel and the instrument panel.
x Always sit upright with your back against the backrest with the front seats properly ad-justed. Never lean against or place any part of your body too close to the area where the air-bags are located.
x Rear seat passengers who are not properly seated and restrained are more likely to be seriously injured in a crash.
WARNING
Improper adjustment of the seats can cause accidents and severe injuries.
x Never adjust the seats while the vehicle is moving. Your seat may move unexpectedly and you could lose control of the vehicle. In addition, you will not be in the correct seating posi-tion while adjusting the seats.
x Adjust the front seat height, angle and longitudinal direction only if the seat adjustment area is clear.
x The adjustment of the front seats must not be restricted by things in the footwell in front or behind the seats.

WARNING
Some kinds of cigarette lighters can be lit unintentionally, or crushed causing a fire that can result in serious burns and vehicle damage.
x Always make sure that there are no lighters in the seat tracks or near other moving parts before adjusting the seats.
x Before closing a storage compartment, always make sure that no cigarette lighter can be activated, crushed, or otherwise damaged.
x Never leave a cigarette lighter in a storage compartment, on the instrument panel, or in other places in the vehicle. Heat buildup in the passenger and luggage compartment of a parked vehicle can result in temperatures in the vehicle that are much higher than the outside temperatures, particularly in summer. High temperatures could cause the cigarette lighter to catch fire.
Examples of improper seating positions

Manual controls on the driver and front passenger seats

Your vehicle may be equipped with a seat heating feature.
When the ignition is switched on, the front seats can be electrically heated by heating elements that warm the seat backrest and cushion.
Do not use the seat heating if any of the following conditions apply:
x If the seat is not being used.
x If there is a child restraint installed on the front passenger seat.
x If there is a blanket or seat cover on the front passenger seat.
x If the seat is damp or wet.
x If the outside temperature or the temperature inside the passenger compartment is +77 °F (+25 °C) or more.

Function Action for seat heating ⇒ fig. 50 or ⇒ fig. 51
Switch on: Press the A or e button. Seat heating is switched on to maximum.
Adjust the heating level: Press the A or e button repeatedly until the desired heating level is set.
Switch off: Press the A or e button repeatedly until all indicator lights in the button are off.

Special seat heating features
The seat heating on the front passenger side is switched off every time the ignition is switched off. Seat heating must be switched on again each time the ignition is switched on.
On the front driver side, the seat heating will resume at the setting that was set when the ignition was switched off, as long as the ignition is switched on again within 10 minutes.
People suffering from a low level of perceived pain or a lowered awareness of pain as from medica-
tion, paralysis, or chronic illness (e.g. diabetes) should NEVER use the seat heating feature ⇒ !
The use of seat heating by persons with these conditions could result in burns to the back, buttocks, and legs that may take a long time to heal and may never heal completely. If you have any of these conditions, you should take regular breaks and get out of the vehicle, particularly on long trips. Consult your doctor for advice regarding your specific condition.
WARNING
Certain medical conditions, such as paralysis and diabetes, and certain medications can increase the risk of serious burns when the seat heating feature is switched on.
x Vehicle occupants who have a low level of perceived pain or a lowered awareness of pain can receive serious burns to the back, buttocks, and legs that take a long time to heal or may never heal completely.
x Never use the seat heating feature if you or your passengers are at risk of being burned because of a medical condition. Take regular breaks and get out of the vehicle, particularly on long trips. Consult your doctor for advice regarding your specific condition.
x Never let exposed skin remain in contact with the seat upholstery when the seat heating is being used.

WARNING
A wet seat can cause the seat heating to malfunction and increase the risk of serious burns.
x Always make sure the seats are dry before using the seat heating.
x Never sit on the seat with wet clothes.
x Never put damp or wet things including clothes on the seat.
x Never spill liquids on the seats.
NOTICE
x To help prevent damage to electrical and other parts in the seat, do not kneel on the front seats or apply concentrated pressure to a small area of the seat or backrest.
x Liquids, sharp objects and things that do not let the heat in the seat escape into the air, including, for example, a child restraint, a blanket, or seat covers on the seat can damage seat heating.
x If you smell an odor, immediately shut off seat heating and have it checked by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
x Never install leather upholstery on a vehicle with seat heating that originally had cloth upholstery. The seat heating elements for seats with cloth seats will overheat if the cloth up-holstery is replaced with leather upholstery.
Switch off seat heating when it is not needed to help reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.
