Volkswagen Anti-Theft
Volkswagen; Corrado SLC, Passat
DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
The anti-theft system monitors the radio, all doors, hood and
trunk lid position. When the anti-theft system is activated, The horn
and emergency flashers will be activated and the vehicle will not
start. The windows and sun roof (if equipped) are not monitored.
The anti-theft system has self-diagnostic capabilities that
monitor all components and wiring harness. If the system is
functioning correctly, the horn will sound briefly after front door is
locked with the key.

SYSTEM DOES NOT OPERATE
NOTE: Ensure battery is fully charged and all fuses are okay.
1) Ground Circuit Check
Obtain radio security code. Disconnect battery cable
terminals. Disconnect anti-theft control module 6-pin and 10-pin
wiring harness connector. See ANTI-THEFT CONTROL MODULE LOCATION
table. Connect ohmmeter negative lead to ground. Connect positive lead
to anti-theft control module 10-pin wiring harness connector terminal
No. "3" (Brown wire). If continuity is present, go to next step. If
continuity is not present, repair open circuit.
2) Power Circuit Check
Connect battery cable terminals. Connect voltmeter negative
lead to ground. Connect positive lead to anti-theft control module 6-
pin wiring harness connector terminal No. "3" (Red wire). Switch
positive lead to anti-theft control module 10-pin wiring harness
connector terminal No. "1" (Red wire). If 12 volts are present at both
terminals, go to next step. If 12 volts are not present, repair open
circuit.
3) Turn ignition on. Leave voltmeter negative lead connected
to ground. Connect positive lead to anti-theft control module 10-pin
wiring harness connector terminal No. "4" (Black wire for Corrado;

VACUUM SYSTEM CHECK
Door Lock System Does Not Operate
Locate vacuum hose junction. See Fig. 1, 2 or 3. Individually
remove vacuum hose from junction box. Plug junction box port. If door
lock system operates, repair vacuum in hose. If door lock system does
not operate, repeat procedure for all other vacuum circuit at junction
box.
TESTING
SYSTEM TEST
Ensure vehicle battery is fully charged, fuses are okay and
no leaks are present in vacuum system. When activated, bi-pressure
should operate longer than 5 seconds and then pulse.
CONTROL MODULE TEST
Perform all procedures under TROUBLESHOOTING. If system still
does not perform correctly, replace control module.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory
systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may
exist until computer systems have completed a relearn
cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL
INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
BI-PRESSURE PUMP
Removal & Installation
Remove right rear luggage trim. Remove bi-pressure pump
bracket and insulation. Remove bi-pressure pump. See Fig. 5. To

FUSE PANEL LOCATION
Fuse panel is located under left side of dash board by
driver's knee. Fuses are numbered from left to right.
FUSE PANEL IDENTIFICATION
NOTE: Four separate 30 amp fuses for power windows, air
conditioning, ABS main relay and ABS hydraulic pump relay are

CAUTIONS & WARNINGS
ELECTRICAL SHOCK
WARNING: Contact with live components of ignition system while
engine is running could lead to a fatal electric shock.
RADIATOR FAN
Keep hands away from radiator fan. Fan is controlled by a
thermostatic switch which may come on or run for up to 15 minutes even
after engine is turned off.
RADIATOR CAP
CAUTION: Always disconnect the fan motor when working near the
radiator fan. The fan is temperature controlled and could

start at any time even when the ignition key is in the OFF
position. DO NOT loosen or remove radiator cap when cooling
system is hot.
REPLACING BLOWN FUSES
Before replacing a blown fuse, remove ignition key, turn off
all lights and accessories to avoid damaging the electrical system. Be
sure to use fuse with the correct indicated amperage rating. The use
of an incorrect amperage rating fuse may result in a dangerous
electrical system overload.
BATTERY WARNING
WARNING: When battery is disconnected, vehicles equipped with
computers may lose memory data. When battery power is
restored, driveability problems may exist on some vehicles.
These vehicles may require a relearn procedure. See COMPUTER
RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION section.
BRAKE PAD WEAR INDICATOR
Indicator will cause a squealing or scraping noise, warning
that brake pads need replacement.
HALOGEN BULBS
Halogen bulbs contain pressurized gas which may explode if
overheated. DO NOT touch glass portion of bulb with bare hands. Eye
protection should be worn when handling or working around halogen
bulbs.
SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (AIR BAG)
NOTE: See the AIR BAGS article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Section.
Modifications or improper maintenance, including incorrect
removal and installation of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS),
can adversely affect system performance. DO NOT cover, obstruct or
change the steering wheel horn pad in any way, as such action could
cause improper function of the system. Use only plain water when
cleaning the horn pad. Solvents or cleaners could adversely affect the
air bag cover and cause improper deployment of the system.
WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and
carefully follow all warnings and service precautions. See
appropriate AIR BAGS article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT.
CAUTION: Disconnect negative battery cable before servicing any air
bag system, steering column or passenger side dash
component. After any repair, turn ignition key to the ON

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM
The anti-lock brake system contains electronic equipment that
can be susceptible to interference caused by improperly installed or
high output radio transmitting equipment. Since this interference
could cause the possible loss of the anti-lock braking capability,
such equipment should be installed by qualified professionals.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER
To prevent catalytic converter overheating, DO NOT allow
engine to idle for more than 20 minutes.

VAG ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS
NOTE: If VAG SELF-DIAGNOSIS (VAG ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC) display
does not appear on scan tester, check DLC terminals for
battery voltage and ground. Upper terminal should have
battery voltage, bottom terminals serve as ground.
Corrado SLC
1) Ensure battery voltage and fuses No. 18 and 22 are okay.
Ensure engine ground connections at cylinder head cover and at
manifold are okay.
2) Connect Scan Tester (VAG 1551) to Data Link Connectors
(DLC) located in center console, in front of shift lever. Attach Black
connector first, wait for VAG ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC display, then
connect White connector. DO NOT connect scan tester Blue connector.
3) Turn ignition on or start engine depending on function
being selected. See appropriate SELECTABLE FUNCTIONS table. Press "1"
button to select RAPID DATA TRANSFER function.
4) Press "0" and "1" buttons to select ENGINE ELECTRONICS
function. Press "Q" button to enter input. Electronic Control Module
(ECM) identification will be displayed on scan tester.
5) If CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT ANSWER message is displayed,
press HELP button to print a list of possible causes. With scan tester
in RAPID DATA TRANSFER function, press right arrow button. Press "02"
to "08" buttons to select desired function. Press "Q" button to enter
input.
