Important safety instructions on monitoring the Advanced Airbag
System
WARNING
A n airbag syste m that is not functioning prop
er ly cannot provide supplementa l protection
in a frontal crash.
• If the
indi cator light comes on, it
mean s that there may be s omething wron g
with the Adva nced Airbag Sy stem. It is pos
sib le th at the airbag will inflate when it is not
suppo sed to, or will not inflate when it sh ou ld.
• Hav e the airb ag system inspected immedi
at ely by you r Vo lkswage n dealer.
WARNING
If th e front airbag inflates, a child without a
child restraint, in a rearwa rd-facing child scat
or in a forward-faci ng child restraint that has
not been properly insta lled
b e s eriousl y
injured and can be killed.
• Eve n though your vehicle is equipped with
a n Advanced Airbag System, make certain
that all childr en , e specially 12 year s and
yo ung er, always rid e on the back scat properly
restrained for their age and size.
• Alwa ys install forward or rear-facing child

Airbag System.

facing child r estraint attached to the front pas
se nger sea t can pu t too mu ch pr essure on th e
weight-sens ing mat in the seat and register

weight than is actua lly on the sea t. The

sea t and deploy th e A dvanced A irbag w hen

- Onl y use child restraint syste m s that
full y contact the flat portion of
seat
cushion. The child restraint must not tip or
lean t o either side. Volkswag en do cs not
r eco mmend using child scats that r es t on
l egs o r tube -lik e fram es. They do not pro
vide adequate co ntact with the scat.
- Always hee d all legal r equirem ent s per
t a inin g to the in stallati on an d u se of ch ild
sc ats and care fully follo w the in structions
pro vided by the manufacturer of the seat

• Neve r allow childr en und er 4 ft 9 in (57
in che s, 1.5 met ers) to wear a normal safety
belt. They must always be restr ained b y a

- The strongest person could not hold the

jur e each another in an accident.
• Ne ver install rear-faci ng child seat s or in
fant carriers on the front passe nge r sea t.

killed when the passenger airbag inflates
even with Advanced Airbag System.
• The i nflating airb ag w ill hit th e child scat
o r infant carrier w ith great force and will
s mash th e child scat a nd child against the
backr est, ce nter arm res t, d oo r or roof.
• Alwa ys insta ll rear-facing child scats or in
fant carri ers on the r ear seat.
• Forward-facing child seats insta lled on th e
front pa ssenger 's sca t can interfer e with th e
a irb ag w hen it inflate s an d cau se se riou s in
ju ry to th e child . Always install forward-facing
c hild scats on the rear seat.
• I f exce ptional circumstance s requir e th e
u se of a forward-facing child res traint on the
front pa ssenger's scat, th e c hild 's safet y and
we ll-be ing require that the following sp ecia l
pr ecaut ions be taken:

of serious personal injury and/or death:
• Always make sure to position the should er
portion of the three-point belt over the middle
of chi ld's shoulder.
• Never le t the sh o uld er portion of the belt
r es t again st or across the neck, face, chin, or
th roa t of the ch ild.
• 1\Jway s make sure the lap belt portion of
th e thr ee-po int belt is worn s nug and pas ses as
l ow as possib le across the child 's pelvi s. Neve r

Activating the switchable locking feature
Us e the switchable Locking feature to properly secure a child restraint
Always ca refully fo llow t he c hild sear man
u fac turer's instruct io n s w hen insta lling a
c hild res tra int in yo ur vehicle .
To activat e
th e sw itch able lock ing fe a ture:
- Pla ce the ch ild res train t on a sea t, pref
erab ly o n the rear
- Route the safe ty belt around or th rough
the child restra int usi ng the proper path
for the sa fety be lt as speci fied by the child
re stra int manu facturer
- In se rt the belt tongu e into the buckle
fo r that seat ing po siti on.
- Make su re th at the red re lease button is
faci ng away from th e child restra int so that
it ca n be unbuckled quickly .
- Push the c hild sca t do wn w it h your full
we ig ht t o get the sa fety belt rea lly tight
- S low ly pull the belt all the way out.
