Adjust the interval settings with switch ⇒ fig. 88 (1) (vehicles without rain sensors) or the sensitivity of the rain sensor (vehicles with rain sensors).

(E) x One-tap wiping – brief wiping. Hold the lever pressed down longer to wipe more often.
(F) W Pull the lever toward the steering wheel to activate the windshield washers, then release.
(G) Z Intermittent wiping for the rear window. The wiper wipes about every 6 seconds.
(H) \ Press the lever forward as far as it will go to activate the rear window washers, then release.

NOTICE
x To help prevent damage to the wiper blades and the wiper motor when it is cold outside, always make sure that blades are not frozen to the windshield before operating the wipers. Using the service position can be helpful in cold weather so the wipers do not freeze to the
windshield ⇒ Windshield wiper service position.
x If the ignition is switched off while the wipers are running, the wipers will continue at the same wiping speed when the ignition is switched on again. Frost, ice, snow, leaves, and other objects on the windshield can damage the wipers and the wiper motor.
x Remove snow and ice from the wipers before you begin driving.
x If the wiper blades freeze to the windshield, loosen them carefully. Volkswagen recommends using a deicing spray.
NOTICE
Never switch on the windshield wipers when the windshield is dry because the windshield can be scratched.
The windshield wipers work only if the ignition is switched on and the engine hood is closed. The windshield wipers turn off automatically when the engine hood is opened. The rear windshield wipers turn off automatically when the rear hatch is opened.
If the front wipers are on, the rear wiper is switched on automatically when backing up.
If the windshield wiper lever is in the rear window intermittent wiping position ⇒ fig. 89 (G) when the ignition is switched off and back on or the engine is started, rear window wiper action does not resume until the windshield wipers are activated. This is to keep the wiper from working when the

Driving with an open rear hatch

Turn the threaded retainer in the center of the compact spare wheel (2) clockwise until the wheel replaced is securely in place.
If necessary, return the vehicle tool kit to its location in the luggage compartment.
Raise the floor covering and release the retaining pin, then fold the floor covering back down onto the floor of the luggage compartment.
Close the rear hatch.
Differences between the road tires and the compact spare
The compact spare is different in design from the road tires and must be used only in the event of a
flat tire, only for a brief time, and only when driving with extra caution ⇒ .
Replace it with a tire matching the others on your vehicle as soon as possible.
Please heed the following:
x Do not drive faster than 50 mph (80 km/h)!
x Avoid full-throttle acceleration, hard braking and fast cornering!
x Do not use snow chains on the compact spare wheel ⇒ Snow chains.
x After installing the compact spare tire, check the tire pressure as soon as possible ⇒ Tire inflation pressure.
Check the tire inflation pressure of the compact spare whenever you check the tire pressure of the road wheels, at least once a month. Inflate a compact spare tire to the cold tire pressure specified for the compact spare on the tire pressure label or on a separate label for the compact spare, if there is one.

WARNING
Even if empty, portable fuel containers can leak and cause a fire and serious personal injuries, especially in a crash.
x For your safety, we strongly recommend that you do not travel with a portable fuel container in your vehicle.
x If, under exceptional circumstances, you must transport a portable fuel container, please observe the following:
– Never fill a portable fuel container while it is anywhere in or on the vehicle (for example, in the luggage compartment or on the rear hatch). Static electricity can build up while filling and can ignite fuel vapors, causing a fire.
– Always place a portable fuel container on the ground before filling. Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are highly flammable.
– Always keep the filler nozzle completely inside the portable container before and during filling.
– If filling a portable container made of metal, the filler nozzle must always be in contact with the container. This will help prevent static electricity from discharging and causing a fire.
– Always observe local and state or provincial laws about the use, storage, and transportation of portable fuel containers.
– Make certain that the portable fuel container meets industry standards, such as ANSI/ASTM F852-86.
NOTICE
x Remove fuel spills from the vehicle immediately to help prevent damage to the paint, tires, and wheel housings.
x Refueling with diesel fuel when your vehicle has a gasoline engine can cause very serious and expensive engine and fuel system damage that is not covered by any Volkswagen Limited Warranty.
x If you put any amount of incorrect fuel in the fuel tank, do not start the engine under any circumstances. Immediately contact the nearest authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility for assistance. These fuels contain substances that can severely damage the fuel system and the engine if the engine is started.
Fuels can pollute the environment. Spilled fuel must be collected and disposed of properly, following all applicable environmental regulations.
There is no emergency release for the fuel filler flap. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility for assistance.

WARNING
After the vehicle has been washed, the wet brakes or, in winter, brake discs or pads coated with ice, react slower and need longer stopping distances.
x Always dry the brakes and clean off any ice coatings with a few careful applications of the brake. Make sure not to endanger other motorists or cyclists or disobey legal requirements.
CAUTION
Sharp edges under the vehicle can cut exposed skin.
x Always protect your hands and arms from cuts on sharp metal edges when cleaning the underbody, the inside of the wheel housings, etc.
NOTICE
x The water temperature must not be more than +140 °F (+60 °C).
x To help prevent damage to the paint, do not wash the vehicle in direct sunlight.
x Do not use insect sponges, abrasive kitchen sponges or similar things to clean the vehicle. These can damage the paint finish.
x Never clean headlights with a dry cloth or sponge. Always use a wet cloth or sponge. For best results use soapy water.
x When washing or rinsing the vehicle in cold weather, do not let water get into the lock cylinders or point the hose at gaps around the doors, hood, or rear hatch. The water could freeze on the locks and seals and make it difficult to open the vehicle!
NOTICE
To help prevent vehicle damage in a car wash:
x Compare the vehicle track width with the dimensions of the guide rails in the car wash to help prevent damage to wheel rims and tires!
x Switch off the rain sensor before driving through a car wash 122.
x Make sure there is enough clearance for the height and width of the vehicle.
x To help prevent paint damage to the engine hood, place wiper blades against the windshield after they have dried. Do not let them snap back into place.
x Fold the outside mirrors toward the vehicle body. Do not fold power mirrors manually!
x Lock the rear hatch to prevent unintentional opening in the car wash.
Washing with a power washer

Never use a power washer to clean the engine compartment ⇒ Cleaning the engine compartment.
WARNING
Improper use of power washers can cause serious invisible permanent damage leading to tire failure and loss of vehicle control. This can cause accidents and severe personal injury.
x Keep sufficient distance between water jet and tires. Never wash tires with a nozzle that sprays the water out in a direct stream regardless of the distance to the tire and even for a very short time.
x Never use “dirt blasters” to clean tires. Even spraying from a relatively long distance for a very short time can do visible or invisible damage to tires.

x Always dry the brakes and clean off any ice coatings with a few careful applications of the brake. Make sure not to endanger other motorists or cyclists or disobey legal requirements.

x When using a power washer or steam cleaner, only spray the rear assist sensors directly for a short period of time and always keep the nozzle at least 4 inches (10 cm) from the sensor.
x Do not clean icy or snow-covered windows with a power washer.
x When washing or rinsing the vehicle in cold weather, do not let water get into the lock cylinders or point the hose at gaps around the doors, hood, or rear hatch. The water could freeze on the locks and seals and make it difficult to open the vehicle!
Cleaning windows and outside mirrors

Please carry out each step only in the order specified:
3. Remove the screw (1) using the screwdriver in the vehicle tool kit
4. Remove the headlight.
5. Release the connector ⇒ fig. 203 (1) and disconnect it.
6. Turn the bulb holder (2) counterclockwise in the direction of the arrow until it stops and remove it toward the rear with the bulb.
7. Replace the burned out light bulb with a new bulb of the same type.
8. Insert the bulb holder into the headlight assembly and turn it clockwise until it stops.
9. Connect the connector (1) on the bulb holder (2). You must hear the connector click into place.
10. Insert the headlight.
11. Tighten the screw ⇒ fig. 202 (1) with the screwdriver.
12. Install cover in the bumper .

6. Remove the screws (3) C.
7. Pull the tail light out of the body carefully until the electrical connector is visible.
8. Remove the red locking mechanism ⇒ fig. 207 (1) D as illustrated and disconnect the electrical connector with the lever (2) D pressed down.
9. Lay the tail light on a clean and level surface.

Replacing light bulbs

10. Remove the screws (4) E.
11. Remove the bulb holder (3) E from the tail light.
12. Replace burned out tail light, brake light (5) F or turn signal bulbs (6) F with bulbs that are identical to the ones being replaced.
13. Insert the bulb holder in the tail light and screw it in E.

14. Turn the locking mechanism ⇒ fig. 206 (1) A 90 ° clockwise until it stops.
15. Insert the electrical connector into the bulb holder until it clicks into place. Press the red
locking mechanism ⇒ fig. 207 (1) D back in.
16. Insert the tail light into the opening on the body carefully.
17. Hold the tail light in the correct position with one hand and tighten the screws with the other hand (3) C.
18. Insert the trim panel ⇒ fig. 206 (2) B into its original position, first at the bottom and then at the top.
19. Close the side storage compartment in the luggage compartment.
20. Close the rear hatch

LEDs in the rear taillights
Changing LEDs is not possible without dismantling vehicle components. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
Taillights with LEDs may also have some “standard” light bulbs. These bulbs can be replaced.
Different models may have different lights, and the location and design of covers, bulb holders, and bulbs may be in a different location than shown in the illustrations.
