x Push the head restraint all the way down
x Unlock the front passenger backrest in the direction of the arrow ⇒ fig. 57 (1).
x Fold the front passenger backrest forward into the horizontal position in the direction of the arrow (2).
x The front passenger backrest must be securely latched in the folded down position.
Folding the front passenger backrest into place
x Make sure that nobody is near the hinges when folding the backrest back into place.
x Unlock the front passenger backrest to fold it back ⇒ fig. 58.
x Fold the front passenger backrest into the upright position.
x The front passenger backrest must be securely latched in the upright position.
WARNING
Improper folding and improper latching of the front passenger backrest can cause serious personal injury.
x Never fold the front passenger backrest forward or back when the vehicle is moving.
x Always make sure that the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF  light is on and stays on whenever the backrest of the front passenger seat is folded forward.
x Always keep hands, fingers, feet and other body parts out of the way of the seat hinges and the seat locking mechanism when folding the backrest forward and back.
x Floor mats and other objects can get caught in the front passenger backrest hinges. This can cause the front passenger backrest to incorrectly latch when folded back into the upright position.
x When folded back into place, the front passenger backrest must be securely latched in the upright position. An improperly latched front passenger backrest can suddenly move and cause serious personal injury.
WARNING
Open seat mountings and hinges of the folded front passenger backrest can cause severe injuries in the event of a braking maneuver or accident.
x Do not let passengers or children occupy the front passenger seat when the front passenger backrest is folded forward.
x When the front passenger backrest is folded down, only the outer seat of the rear bench behind the driver seat can be occupied. This also applies to children in child safety seats.

Expectant mothers must always wear the lap portion of the safety belt as low as possible across the pelvis and below the rounding of the abdomen – throughout the pregnancy. The safety belt must lie
flat against the body to avoid pressure against the abdomen ⇒ fig. 68.
Adjusting safety belt height
The safety belt position can be adjusted using the following features:
x Safety belt height adjusters for the front seats.
x Front seats with height adjustment.
WARNING
Improperly positioned safety belts can cause serious personal injury in an accident or a sudden braking maneuver.
x Always make sure that all vehicle occupants are correctly restrained and stay in a correct seating position whenever the vehicle is being used.
x Safety belts offer optimum protection only when the seat backrest is upright and belts are correctly positioned on the body.
x A loose-fitting safety belt can cause serious injuries by shifting its position on your body from the strong bones to more vulnerable soft tissue and cause serious injury.
x The shoulder belt portion of the safety belt must be positioned over the middle of the occupant's shoulder and never across the neck or throat.
x The safety belt must lie flat and snug on the occupant's upper body.
x Never wear the shoulder part of the safety belt under your arm or otherwise out of position.
x The lap portion of the safety belt must be positioned as low as possible across the pelvis and never over the abdomen. Make sure the belt lies flat and snug against the pelvis. Pull on the safety belt to tighten if necessary.
x Expectant mothers must always wear the lap portion of the safety belt as low as possible across the pelvis and below the rounding of the abdomen.
x Do not twist the belt when attaching it. If you cannot untwist a twisted safety belt, wear it anyway, but make sure the twisted part is not in contact with your body. Have the problem corrected right away by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
x Never hold the safety belt away from your body with your hand.
x Never wear belts over rigid or breakable objects, such as eye glasses, pens or keys.
x Never modify the position of the belt using comfort clips, loops or similar devices.

x If you have a physical impairment or condition that prevents you from sitting properly on the seat with the safety belt properly fastened, special modifications to your vehicle may be necessary.
x Contact your authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility or call the Volkswagen Customer CARE Center at 1-800-822-8987 for information about possible modifications to your vehicle.

Safety belt height adjusters

WARNING
Improper folding and improper latching of the rear seat backrest can cause serious personal injury.
x Always make sure there are no people or animals in the area around the rear seat backrest when folding it forward.
x Never fold the rear seat backrest up or down while the vehicle is moving.
x When folding the rear seat backrest back up, make sure that the safety belt does not get caught or damaged.
x Keep hands, fingers, feet and other body parts out of the away when folding the rear seat backrest up and down.
x Each rear seat backrest must be securely latched into place in the upright position so that the safety belts on the rear seats can provide protection. This is particularly the case for the middle seat on the rear bench.
x If a seat is used with an unsecured backrest, the passenger will move forward together with the rear seat backrest during sudden braking, driving maneuvers, or a collision.
x No one, including children, may ride on the rear seats if the rear seat backrest is folded down or not correctly latched.
NOTICE
Before folding the rear seat backrest forward, adjust the front seats so that the rear seat's head restraint or backrest cushion will not touch the front seats.
NOTICE
Items in the luggage compartment could be damaged or cause damage when the rear seat is adjusted in the fore and aft direction.
Removing and reinstalling the rear seat

4. Secure both seat rails of the rear seat in front and back with 2 hexagonal nuts each, tightening the nuts by hand - do not tighten them with the lug wrench yet.
5. Lift the right rear seat into the vehicle through the right rear door.
6. Set the seat rails of the rear seat first on the front anchoring studs and then on the rear studs.
7. Secure both seat rails of the rear seat in front and back with 2 hexagonal nuts each, tightening the nuts by hand - do not tighten them with the lug wrench yet.
8. To align the seat rails, press the left rear seat all the way to the left in the vehicle.
9. To align the seat rails, press the right rear seat all the way to the right in the vehicle.
10. Tighten the hexagonal nuts in the luggage compartment ⇒ fig. 101 (arrows) to 44 ft-lbs (60 Nm) using a torque wrench. If no torque wrench is available, tighten the hexagonal nuts using the lug wrench and have the torque checked at a qualified workshop as soon as possible.
11. Push the rear seats as far back as possible ⇒  Adjusting the rear seat.
12. Remove the hexagonal nuts in the rear of the footwell again, set the 3 plastic covers ⇒ fig. 100 on the studs and screw on with the hexagonal nuts.
13. Tighten the hexagonal nuts ⇒ fig. 100 (arrows) to 44 ft-lbs (60 Nm) using a torque wrench. If no torque wrench is available, tighten the hexagonal nuts using the lug wrench and have the torque checked at a qualified workshop as soon as possible.
14. Clip on the small covers (not pictured) on the hexagonal nuts ⇒ fig. 100 (arrows).
15. Install the foam insert and spare wheel in the vehicle ⇒  Compact spare wheel.
16. Install the luggage compartment floor ⇒  Variable luggage compartment floor.
17. Install the luggage compartment cover ⇒  Luggage compartment cover.
18. Install all rear head restraints ⇒  Adjusting the seating position.
WARNING
No one may ride in the back of the vehicle when the rear seat has been removed.
WARNING
An improperly installed rear seat can separate from its mountings during an accident.
x All securing bolts must be tightened to the specified torque after the rear seat has been installed.
CAUTION
Sharp-edged parts are located on the underside of the rear seat.
x Protect your hands when you lift the rear seat in or out.
NOTICE
x Have at least one person help to lift the rear seat in or out. One person should be in the vehicle and one outside.

x To secure, push the retaining pin ⇒ fig. 107 to the right.
x To close, push the retaining pin (1) to the left and guide the luggage compartment floor downwards.
Extending the luggage compartment floor forward
x Remove the luggage compartment cover ⇒  Luggage compartment cover.
x Remove the rear head restraints ⇒  Adjusting the seating position.
x Push both sections of the rear seat forward ⇒  Adjusting the seating position.
x Fold the rear backrests forward ⇒  Adjusting the seating position.
x Fold the cover forward ⇒ fig. 108 (1).
Extending the luggage compartment floor downward
x Remove the luggage compartment cover ⇒  Luggage compartment cover.
x Raise the luggage compartment floor, pull from the side pins (2) and remove it from the vehicle to the rear.
There may be a foam element with the spare wheel ⇒ fig. 107 located beneath the variable luggage
compartment floor. If a spare wheel is present, remove it ⇒  Compact spare wheel and remove the foam element from the luggage compartment.
WARNING
During hard braking or an accident, loose objects can fly through the passenger compartment and cause serious or even fatal injuries.
x Even if the luggage compartment floor panel is properly raised, it is still necessary to secure all objects.
x Objects stowed between the rear seat bench and the luggage compartment floor panel must never be more than 2/3 as high as the raised floor panel.
x Objects stowed between the rear seat bench and the raised luggage compartment floor panel must never weigh more than about 16.5 lbs. (7.5 kg).
NOTICE
Do not let the luggage compartment floor fall freely when closing it. Always guide it down into place. The trim or the luggage compartment floor could be damaged.
If you slide the rear seats forward, there is a gap between the luggage compartment floor and the rear seats. Make certain there are no objects in this space before sliding the rear seats back again.

WARNING
Some kinds of cigarette lighters can be lit unintentionally, or crushed causing a fire that can result in serious burns and vehicle damage.
x Always make sure that there are no lighters in the seat tracks or near other moving parts before adjusting the seats.
x Before closing a storage compartment, always make sure that no cigarette lighter can be activated, crushed, or otherwise damaged.
x Never leave a cigarette lighter in a storage compartment, on the instrument panel or in other places in the vehicle. Heat buildup in the passenger and luggage compartment of a parked vehicle can result in temperatures in the vehicle that are much higher than the outside temperatures, particularly in summer. High temperatures could cause the cigarette lighter to catch fire.
NOTICE
x The defroster heating wires or antenna in the rear window can be damaged by hard or sharp things on the shelf below the rear window
x Do not keep any food, medicine, or other items sensitive to heat or cold in the vehicle. They can be damaged or made unusable by heat or cold.
x Things that are made of transparent materials (such as eyeglasses, magnifying glasses, or transparent suction cups on the windows) can magnify sunlight and damage the vehicle.
The ventilation slots between the rear window and the luggage compartment cover must not be blocked so that stale air can escape from the vehicle.
Storage compartment in the front doors

backrests can damage the vehicle electrical system and prevent the airbag system from working
properly ⇒ .
Electrical components and connectors that could be damaged by incorrect cleaning or handling are
installed in power seats and heated seats ⇒ . This can also result in damage to other parts of the vehicle electrical system.
For this reason, read and follow these cleaning instructions:
x Do not use pressure washers, steam cleaners, or cooling spray.
x Do not use detergent pastes or mild detergent solutions.
x Do not wet the surface completely.
x Only use cleaning products approved by Volkswagen.
x If you have questions or concerns, consult a professional cleaner.
x Before using any cleaning agent, familiarize yourself with instructions and warnings on the packaging.
x Vacuum upholstery, fabric trim, Alcantara® upholstery, and carpeting regularly with a suitable brush attachment.
x A soft sponge or a commercially available lint-free microfiber cloth may be used for general
cleaning ⇒ .
x Clean Alcantara® surfaces with a damp cotton or wool cloth or a commercially available lint-free
microfiber cloth ⇒ .
Upholstery and fabric trim with light generalized soiling can be cleaned with a commercially available dry-foam cleaner.
If the upholstery fabric and fabric trim pieces are heavily soiled, see your authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility before you begin cleaning to learn about suitable cleaning options. If necessary, have the cleaning done by a professional.
Cleaning upholstery on non-heated seats, manual seats, or seats without airbag components
x Before using any cleaning agent, familiarize yourself with instructions and warnings on the packaging.
x Vacuum upholstery, fabric trim, Alcantara® upholstery, and carpeting regularly with a suitable brush attachment.
x Do not use pressure washers, steam cleaners, or cooling spray.
x A soft sponge or a commercially available lint-free microfiber cloth may be used for general
cleaning ⇒ .
x Clean Alcantara® surfaces with a damp cotton or wool cloth or a commercially available lint-free
microfiber cloth ⇒ .

Removing stains
When treating stains, it may be necessary to clean the entire surface and not just the stain itself. This is especially true if the entire surface has become dirty from normal use. Otherwise, the area that is treated may become lighter than the untreated area. If you have questions or concerns, consult a professional cleaner.

Type of stain Recommended cleaning for fabric and upholstery
Water-based stains, such as coffee or fruit juice. – Moisten a sponge with water and rub the stain gently with a circular motion. – Wipe dry with an absorbent cloth.
Persistent stains, such as chocolate or make-up. – Use only Volkswagen-approved cleaning products. – If necessary, have the fabric or upholstery professionally cleaned.
Grease-based stains, such as oil, lipstick, etc. – Use only Volkswagen-approved cleaning products. – If necessary, have the fabric or upholstery professionally cleaned.

WARNING
If there is a malfunction in the airbag system, the airbag may not deploy correctly or at all, or it may deploy unexpectedly. This could cause fatal injuries.
x Have the airbag system inspected immediately by your authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
NOTICE
If the upholstery on power seats, heated seats, or seats with airbag components is wet, electrical components and the vehicle electrical system could be damaged.
x If the seating surface becomes soaked, have it dried and the system components checked immediately by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
x Do not use steam cleaners because the steam could cause the dirt to penetrate deeper into the fabric and make it impossible to remove.
x Pressure washers and cooling sprays can damage the upholstery.
NOTICE
x Clean only the carpet and floor mats with brushes. Other textile surfaces can be damaged by brushes.
x If detergent pastes or mild detergent solutions are applied with a damp cloth or sponge, the surfactants in the detergent may cause visible lines to form at the edges of the area where the detergent was applied. These lines are generally difficult or impossible to remove.
NOTICE
x Do not soak Alcantara®.
x Do not treat Alcantara® with leather care products, solvents, floor wax, shoe polish, stain remover or similar products.
x Do not use brushes for damp cleaning, because they can damage upholstery surfaces.
x Do not use a steam cleaner, because dirt will penetrate deeper into the fabric.
