WARNING
Improper use of the electronic parking brake can cause accidents and severe injuries.
x Never use the parking brake to slow down the vehicle when it is moving, except in an emergency. Braking distance is much longer, since only the rear wheels are braked. Alwa ys use the foot brake.
x Never press the accelerator pedal when a selector lever position or gear is engaged and the engine is running. The vehicle could begin moving, even if the electronic parking brake is set.
x Never activate the throttle manually from the engine compartment when the engine is running and the automatic transmission is in gear. The vehicle will start to move even if the parking brake is engaged.
NOTICE
Even though the transmission is in Park (P), the vehicle may move a couple of inches (a few centimeters) forwards or backwards if you take your foot off the brake pedal after stopping the vehicle without first firmly setting the parking brake.
If the vehicle battery is dead, the electronic parking brake cannot be released. Use a jump-start
You may hear noises when setting or releasing the electronic parking brake.
If the electronic parking brake is not used for a while, an automatic system check will occasionally run when the vehicle is parked. This system check makes audible noises.
Parking

WARNING
High voltage systems in the engine compartment can cause electrical shocks or even elec-trocution, severe burns, other serious injuries, and even death!
x Never short-circuit the electrical system. Be especially careful when using jumper cables. The vehicle's battery could explode!
x To reduce the risk of electrical shock and personal injury while the engine is running or being started:
– Never touch ignition cables. Never touch other components of the high-voltage elec-tronic ignition system.
– Never touch the wiring of the HID – High Intensity Discharge (Xenon) headlights.
x Read and heed the important information and warnings on cleaning the engine compart-
ment ⇒  Cleaning the engine compartment.
WARNING
Moving parts in the engine compartment can cause serious personal injury on contact.
x Never reach into the area around or touch the radiator fan. Contact with the blades can cause serious personal injury. Always remember that the radiator fan is temperature-controlled and can come on suddenly even when the engine has been switched off for a while and the key has been removed from the ignition.
x If you have to perform a check or repair when the engine is running, there are more risks from the rotating parts, such as the drive belts, alternator, radiator fan, etc., and from the high-voltage ignition system. Always use extreme care.
– Always make sure that jewelry, loose clothing and long hair do not get caught in rotat-ing engine parts. Before starting any work remove your jewelry, take off your necktie, tie back and cover your hair, and do not wear clothing that can hang down and get caught in moving engine parts.
– Always use extreme caution if the accelerator pedal has to be depressed to perform a check. The vehicle will start to move even if the parking brake is on.
x Never leave any objects in the engine compartment, for example cleaning rags and tools. Objects left behind can cause malfunctions, engine damage, and even fires.
WARNING
Operating fluids and some materials in the engine compartment can catch fire easily, causing burns and other serious personal injuries!
x Do not smoke.
x Never work next to open flames or sparks.
x Never pour or spill operating fluids or other flammable liquids on the engine. These fluids can ignite on hot engine parts and cause injuries.
x If work on the fuel system or the electrical system is necessary:
– Always disconnect the 12 Volt vehicle battery. Make sure the vehicle is unlocked when you disconnect the battery, or the alarm will go off. Never touch the electrical wiring of the ignition system.
– Never work near heaters, water heaters, or other open flames.
x Always have a functional, approved fire extinguisher nearby.

x Vigorously shake the tire inflation cylinder ⇒ fig. 343 (10) a few times back and forth.
x Tightly screw the filling hose ⇒ fig. 343 (3) to the tire inflation bottle (turn clockwise). The foil on the seal is automatically pierced.
x Remove the sealing plug from the filling hose ⇒ fig. 343 (3) and slide the open end onto the tire valve.
x Hold the cylinder with the bottom pointing up and fill the entire contents of the tire inflation cylinder into the tire.
x Detach the empty tire inflation cylinder from the valve.
x Using the valve core wrench ⇒ fig. 343 (1) screw the valve core back into the tire valve.
Inflating the tire
x Screw the tire inflation hose ⇒ fig. 343 (5) of the air compressor tightly to the tire valve.
x Check whether the air release valve ⇒ fig. 343 (7) is screwed on tightly.
x Open the engine hood ⇒  Working in the engine compartment.
x Attach the cable clips ⇒ fig. 343 (9) only to the jump-start terminals in the engine compartment
⇒ fig. 344. The red clip on the compressor cable is connected to the positive (+) terminal; the black clip is connected to the negative terminal (—).
x Start the vehicle engine and let it run.
x Switch the air compressor on using the ON / OFF switch ⇒ fig. 343 (8),
x Let the air compressor run until a pressure of 36 – 44 psi (250 - 300 kPa) is reached ⇒ . Maxi-
mum run time 8 minutes ⇒ .
x Switch off the air compressor.
x If an air pressure of 36 – 44 psi (250 - 300 kPa) cannot be reached, unscrew the tire inflation hose from the tire valve.
x Drive about 30 feet (10 meters) backwards or forwards so that the sealant can be distributed inside the tire.
x Connect the tire inflation hose of the air compressor again to the tire valve and repeat the inflation process.
x If the required tire pressure still cannot be reached, the tire is too badly damaged. The tire cannot
be sealed using the tire mobility set. Do not drive the vehicle. Get professional assistance ⇒ .
x Disconnect the air compressor and unscrew the tire inflation hose from the tire valve.
x If a tire pressure of 36 – 44 psi (250 – 300 kPa) is reached, continue driving right away and drive at a speed of not more than 50 mph (80 km/h).
x Check tire pressure after 10 minutes of driving ⇒  Check after 10 minutes of driving.
WARNING
The tire inflation hose and air compressor can get hot during inflation.
x Protect hands and skin from hot parts.
x Do not place the hot tire inflation hose or hot air compressor on flammable material.
x Let the equipment cool off almost completely before stowing it.
x If the tire cannot be inflated to at least 36 psi (250 kPa), the damage is too great to be re-paired with the tire mobility set. The sealant is not able to seal the tire. Do not drive the vehi-cle. Get professional assistance.

Jump-starting

WARNING
Improper use of jumper cables when jump-starting a vehicle with a dead battery can cause the battery to explode, leading to serious personal injury. To help reduce the risk of battery explosion:
x All work on the batteries or the electrical system in your vehicle can cause serious acid burns, fires, or electrical shocks. Always read and heed the following WARNINGS and safety
precautions before working on the batteries or the electrical system ⇒  12 Volt vehicle bat-tery.
x Always make sure that the battery providing starting assistance (the booster battery) has the same voltage as the dead battery (12 V) and about the same amperage capacity (see bat-tery label).
x Never jump-start a vehicle with a thawed or frozen battery. The battery can explode. A dead battery can freeze at temperatures around +32 °F (0 °C).
x A battery that is frozen or was frozen, but has since thawed, must be replaced.
x When the vehicle battery is jump-started, it gives off hydrogen gas, which is highly explo-sive! Always keep fire, sparks, open flame, and smoking materials far away from vehicle bat-teries. Never use a cellular telephone while connecting or disconnecting jumper cables.
x Jump-start batteries only in well-ventilated areas. Batteries give off highly explosive hy-drogen gas during jump-starting.
x Always route the jumper cables so that they cannot get caught in any moving parts in the engine compartment.
x Never short out the battery terminals by connecting the positive terminal (+) and negative (–) terminals with each other.
x Never connect the negative cable from the other vehicle directly to the negative terminal of the dead battery, as this may cause the hydrogen gas given off by the dead battery to ex-plode.
x Never attach the negative cable from the vehicle providing starting assistance to any part of the fuel system or to the brake hoses or brake lines.
x Never allow the non-insulated parts of the battery clamps to touch.
x Never allow the jumper cable attached to the positive battery terminal to contact metal parts of the vehicle.
x Always follow the instructions of the jumper cable manufacturer.
NOTICE
To help prevent extensive damage to the vehicle electrical system, read and heed the follow-ing:
x Connecting jumper cables improperly can cause a short circuit and do expensive damage to the vehicle's electrical system.
x Do not let the vehicles touch each other while the jumper cables are connected. If they do, electrical current may flow between the vehicles when the positive (+) terminals are connected, causing electrical system damage.

Positive and negative jump-starting terminals

The procedure for attaching and for removing the jumper cables is described below. Perform each of the following steps only in the order in which it is described.
Before you begin
d Switch off the ignition in both vehicles.
d Open the hoods of both vehicles.
d Remove the cover from the positive terminal on your vehicle and, if necessary, the battery cover of the other vehicle.

jump-started by a vehicle whose battery is in the engine compartment (2) ⇒ .
1. Attach one end of the red jumper cable to the positive jump-start terminal (+) of the vehicle with the dead battery (1).
2. Attach the other end of the red jumper cable to the positive terminal (+) of the booster battery (2).
3. Connect one end of the black jumper cable to a suitable ground connection (3) on the vehicle with the booster battery (2). A suitable ground connection is a solid metal part bolted directly to the en-gine block of the vehicle with the booster battery or this vehicle's engine block itself.
4. Attach the other end of the black jumper cable to the negative jump-start terminal (-) of the vehicle with the dead battery (1).

Diagram B applies where the dead battery (1) is in the engine compartment of the vehicle being jump-
started, and the vehicle providing starting assistance has jump-start terminals (2) ⇒ .
1. Attach one end of the red jumper cable to the positive terminal (+) of the dead battery (1).
2. Attach the other end of the red jumper cable to the positive jump-start terminal (+) of the vehicle providing starting assistance (2).
3. Attach one end of the black jumper cable to the negative jump-start terminal (-) of the vehicle providing starting assistance (2).
4. Connect the other end of the black jumper cable to a suitable ground connection (3) on the vehicle with the dead battery (1). A suitable ground connection is a solid metal part bolted directly to the engine block of the vehicle with the dead battery or this vehicle's engine block itself.

1. Attach one end of the red jumper cable to the positive jump-start terminal (+) of the vehicle with the dead battery (1).
2. Attach the other end of the red jumper cable to the positive jump-start terminal (+) of the vehicle providing starting assistance (2).
3. Attach one end of the black jumper cable to the negative jump-start terminal (-) of the vehicle providing starting assistance (2).
4. Attach the other end of the black jumper cable to the negative jump-start terminal (-) of the vehicle with the dead battery (1).
Starting the engine
1. Start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery that is providing help and let it run at idle speed.

2. Turn the ignition of the vehicle with the dead battery. If the engine starts, wait 2 to 3 minutes until it
“runs smoothly” before removing the jumper cables as described below ⇒ . If the engine does not start within about 10 seconds, turn off the ignition and wait at least 1 minute; then try again.
Before removing the jumper cables
1. Switch off the headlights (if they are on).
2. In the vehicle with the dead battery, switch on the heater fan and the rear window defroster. This helps tit minimize voltage spikes when the cables are disconnected.
Removing the jumper cables
1. Before you remove the jumper cables, switch off the headlights (if they are on).
2. In the vehicle with the dead battery, switch on the heater fan and the rear window defroster. This helps to minimize voltage spikes when the jumper cables are disconnected.
3. With the engine running, remove the jumper cables in reverse order to the way they were con-nected. Specifically:
– Disconnect the black (–) cable from the vehicle with the dead battery.
– Disconnect the black (–) cable from the other vehicle (vehicle with the good battery).
– Disconnect the red (+) cable from the other vehicle (vehicle with the good battery).
– Disconnect the red (+) cable from the vehicle with the dead battery.
4. Turn off the heater fan and the rear winder defroster on the vehicle with the dead battery.
5. Snap the cap of the positive jump-start terminal back on, reinstall covers, and close engine hoods.

x Avoid electrostatic discharge in the vicinity of the vehicle battery. Sparks may cause the hydrogen gas escaping from the vehicle battery to ignite.
x Never jump-start a vehicle with a battery that is damaged or frozen or that was frozen and has thawed. The battery can explode. Replace the battery instead.
x Always follow the instructions of the jumper cable manufacturer.
x Always make sure that the battery providing starting assistance has the same voltage as the dead battery (12 V) and about the same capacity (see battery label).
x Batteries give off explosive hydrogen gas. Always keep fire, sparks, open flame and smok-ing materials away from batteries.
x Never connect the negative cable from the other vehicle directly to the negative terminal of the dead battery. The hydrogen gas from the battery is explosive.
x Never short out the battery terminals by connecting the positive (+) and negative (–) ter-minals with each other.
NOTICE
Checking the electrolyte level
x The 12 Volt vehicle battery is located under the left front seat. Specialized knowledge and tools are required to access the vehicle battery. For this reason, have an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility check the electrolyte level of the vehicle battery.
