Air recirculation mode

General notes
There are different types of air recirculation mode:
Manual air recirculation mode (Heating and fresh air system).
Manual air recirculation mode (air condi-tioning system).
Left indicator lamp lit up in the button: manual air recirculation mode (Ciima-
------------Right indicator lamp lit up in the button: automatic air recircutation mode (Ciima-tronic).
The air recirculation mode prevents outside air from entering the vehicle.
if the outside temperature is very low or very high, the manual air recirculation mode should be selec-ted for a short time in order to heat or cool the ve-hicle interior more quickly.
For safety reasons, the air recirculation mode will switch off if the@ button is pressed, or if the air distribution regulator is switched to lliil => .1:!,.

Function of the automatic air recirculation mode e<>A
In position a>• fresh air will enter the vehicle interi-or. The air recirculation mode will switch on auto-matically if the system detects an increase in the

concentration of noxious substances in the outside air. The air recirculation mode will switch off as soon as this level has returned to normal.
The system cannot detect unpleasant odours.
The air recirculation mode will not be switched on automatically in certain circumstances such as when the ambient temperature is low or the air conditioning system has been switched on.
Switching the automatic air recirculation mode on and off
Switching on: press button repeatedly until the right indicator lamp in the button lights up.
Switching off: press button repeatedly until the indicator lamp in the button is no longer lit up.
A WARNING
Stale air can quickly make the driver tired and affect their concentration, which In turn can cause collisions, accidents and serious inju-ries.
• Never use the air reclrculation mode for an extended period as no fresh air will enter the vehicle Interior.
• If the cooling system is switched off, the windows can mist up very quickly In air recir-culatlon mode and reduce visibility consider-ably.
• Always switch off the air reclrculation mode when it is not required.

In vehicles with an air conditioning system, do not smoke when the air reclrculatlon mode Is switched on. The smoke drawn Into the cooling system can leave a residue on the evaporator and the dust and pollen filter with active carbon insert, producing a lasting unpleasant odour.
m Cllmatronic: when reversing the vehicle, or l!J when the wash and wipe system is being used, the air recirculation mode will switch on tem-porarily to prevent exhaust emissions from entering the vehicle interior.

Switching the supplementary heating system on and off

In vehicles with camping equipment (California), the supplementary heater is controlled via the cen-tral control panel =>page 192.
Switching on the supplementary heating sys-tem:
Manually with button [011/0IF) in the roof dis-ON/OFF play.
l/i Manually with the remote control key.
Automatically with a programmed and ac-tivated switch-on time.
Switching off the supplementary heating sys-tem:
ON/OFF Manually with the function button =>Fig. 264 CD in the roof display.

Automatically after the set operating dura-tion has elapsed.

Setting the operating duration (when the ignition is switched off)
The default setting for the operating duration is 30 minutes. You can set the operating duration be-tween 10 and 120 minutes.
• Press any button on the roof display to activate the roof display.
• Only if the vehicle has an auxiliary coolant heater: Press the button to set the operating mode.
• Press the@ button.
• Press the button@) to set the operating dura-tion.

The supplementary heating system has been switched on. The operatin_lLduration is counted backwards. Press to switch off the sup-plementary heating system prematurely.

Things to note
The supplementary heating system runs on for a short time after it is switched off in order to cool the heating unit (switch-off delay). The exhaust gases in the system can also be emitted.
Switch-off delay for the auxiliary heater
If the ignition is switched off while the auxiliary wa-ter heater is on, the selected function continues being performed for a maximum of 10 minutes. The set switch-off delay is shown on the display.
Each time button is pressed, the switch-off delay is reduced by one minute.

• Vehicles with a diesel engine should under no circumstances be filled and driven with pet· rol, kerosene, heating oil or any other fuels that have not been expressly approved for diesel engines. Other fuels could cause extensive and expensive engine damage and damage to the fuel system which will not be covered by any Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles guarantee.

Different engines require different fuels. The facto-ry-fitted sticker on the inside of the tank flap indi-cates the fuel type that is required for your particu-lar vehicle.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles recommends us-ing fuels with a low sulphur content or which are sulphur-free in order to reduce fuel consumption and prevent damage to the engine.
If the engine is not running smoothly or begins to judder, this can indicate poor or inadequate fuel quality, e.g. water in the fuel. If these symptoms appear, reduce the vehicle speed immediately and drive to the nearest qualified workshop at medium engine speeds, avoiding high engine loading. If these symptoms occur immediately after the vehi-

A WARNING
Incorrect handling of fuel can cause explo-sions, fire, serious burns and other injuries.
• Fuel is highly explosive and inflammable.
• Never handle fuel near open flames, sparks or glowing matter (e.g. cigarettes).
• Keep naked flames, hot parts and sparks at a safe distance.

• Your vehicle is not suitable for use with bio-diesel and must not be filled up or driven with biodiesel. Failure to observe this point can re-sult in damage to the fuel system and engine.
• Some diesel manufacturers blend biodiesel with diesel fuel in compliance with European Standard 590 or an equivalent standard (in Ger-many). Use of this diesel is allowed and will not damage the engine or fuel system.
• The diesel engine has been developed for use with diesel only. For this reason, petrol, heating oil or other unsuitable fuels may not be used. These fuels can cause serious damage to the fuel system and engine.

• The service life of the diesel particulate filter can be reduced considerably if diesels with a high sulphur content are used. SCR catalysts can be used to reduce emissions from diesel engines (SCR = Selective Catalytic Re-duction). The SCR catalyst uses Ad Blue® urea sol-ution to convert nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water.
If the vehicle is equipped with this kind of emission control system for diesel vehicles, the filler neck for the Ad Blue® tank is located below the filler cap for the fuel tank.
The Ad Blue® level should be checked within the scope of the service work Service schedule.
Information on AdBiue®
The Ad Blue® consumption figures depend on the individual driving style, the system's operating tem-perature and the ambient temperature that the ve-hicle is operated in.
The vehicle is fitted with a separate tank for Ad Bl-ue®. The Ad Blue® tank holds approximately 13 li-tres. For technical reasons, the capacity may be slightly larger when refilling using refill bottles.
The Ad Blue® tank must never run empty. As of a remaining distance of approximately 2,400 km. the instrument cluster display will indicate that the

A WARNING
If the AdBiue® level is too low, the vehicle cannot be restarted after the Ignition has been switched off. Starting with jump leads is also not possible.
• Refill AdBiue® at the latest when the re-maining distance reaches approximately 1,000 km.
• Never allow the Ad Blue® tank to run emp-ty.
A WARNING
Ad Blue® is an Irritant and corrosive fluid that can damage the skin, eyes and breathing passages upon contact.

• If Ad Blue® gets Into the eyes or onto the skin, Immediately wash the area with lots of water for at least 15 minutes and consult a doctor.
• If Ad Blue® is swallowed, Immediately rinse the mouth out with lots of water for at least 15 minutes. Do not induce vomiting un-less Instructed to do so by a doctor. Seek medical assistance Immediately.

Before continuing the journey
• After refilling, switch on the ignition only.
• Leave the ignition switched on for at least 30 seconds to allow the system to detect the refill procedure.
• Do not start the engine until the 30 seconds have elapsed!
Filling at low temperatures
Ambient temperatures below -11 •c (12.F) may af-fect the filling process.
If the Ad Blue® is frozen and the warning lamp lights up, it may not be possible the complete the filling procedure. Leave the vehicle at a warmer lo-cation until the Ad Blue® is liquid again, or have a qualified workshop fill the Ad Blue®.

Ad Blue® should only be kept In sealed origi-nal containers In a safe place.
• Never store Ad Blue® In empty food con-tainers, bottles or any other non-original con-tainers as people finding these containers may not know that they contain Ad Blue®.
• Ad Blue® must be stored out of the reach of children.

• Only use Ad Blue® which complies with the ISO 22241-1 standard and which Is still in its original packaging.
• Never mix water or additives with Ad Blue®. Any damage caused by mixing in water or addi-tives would not be covered by the factory war-ranty.

• Do not transport the refill bottle in the vehi-cle habitually. The bottle may develop a leak following changes In temperature and damage and the Ad Blue® may damage the vehicle Inte-rior.

In normal driving conditions, the needle will be in the middle section of the scale. The temperature may also rise when the engine is working hard, es-pecially at high ambient temperatures.
Several warning and indicator lamps will light up briefly as a functional check when the ignition is switched on. They will go out after a few seconds.
Solution
t Do not drive on! Stop the vehicle as soon as possible and when safe to do so. Stop the engine, let the engine cool down until the needle is back in the normal area. Check the coolant level =>page 361.
After the engine has cooled down, check the coolant level and refill engine coolant if the level is too low =>page 361. There is a fault if the coolant level is correct.

Checking the coolant level and refilling coolant

The warning lamp for the engine coolant will light up if the engine coolant level is too low.
Preparation
• Park the vehicle on a firm and level surface.
• Allow the engine to cool down &.
• Open the bonnet&. 350.
• The coolant expansion tank has the all. symbol on its cap 278.
Checking the coolant level
• When the engine is cold, check the coolant lev-el on the side markings of the engine coolant ex-pansion tank 277.
• Refill the coolant if the liquid level is below the minimum marking ("min"). When the engine is warm, the coolant level may be slightly above the top end of the marked area.
Refilling coolant
• Always protect your face, hands and arms from hot coolant or steam by placing a suitable cloth on the cap of the coolant expansion tank.
• Unscrew the cap carefully &.
• Refill only new coolant according to the Volks-wagen specification 360)
• Only top up coolant if there is coolant residue in the expansion tank. If this is not observed, the en-gine could be damaged. If you cannot see any coolant in the expansion tank do not drive on. Seek professional assistance.

• If you can see coolant residue in the expansion tank, top up coolant until the level remains stable.
• The coolant level must be between the marks on the engine coolant expansion tank 277. Do not fill up over the top line of the marked area
• Close the cap tightly.
• If in an emergency you do not have access to the coolant of the required specification 360), do not use any other coolant addi-tive. Instead, initially refill with distilled water only. Then add the correct proportion of coolant ad-ditive as soon as possible 360.
A WARNING
Hot steam or engine coolant can cause seri-ous burns.
• Never open the bonnet if you can see or hear steam or engine coolant coming out of the engine compartment. Always wait until no escaping steam or coolant can be seen or heard.
• Always allow the engine to cool down completely before carefully opening the bon-net. Hot components can burn the skin.
• The following points should be noted be-fore opening the bonnet once it has cooled down.
-Apply the handbrake fully and move the selector lever to position P or move the manual gear lever to the neutral position.

A WARNING
Any work on the vehicle battery and the elec-trical system can cause serious chemical burns, fire or electric shocks. Always read the following warnings and safety informa-tion before carrying out any kind of work:
• Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers before carrying out any work on the vehicle battery and also disconnect the negative cable from the vehicle battery.
• Children should always be kept away from electrolyte and the vehicle battery.
• Always wear eye protection.
• Electrolyte Is very aggressive. lt can burn the skin and can cause blindness. When working with the battery, ensure that your hands, arms and face in particular are protec-ted from acid spillages.

• Do not smoke during the work, and never work near naked flames or sparks.
• When handling cables and electrical equipment, avoid generating sparks and elec-trostatic charge.
• Never short circuit the battery poles.
• Never use a damaged vehicle battery. it can explode. Damaged vehicle batteries must be replaced as soon as possible.
• Damaged or frozen vehicle batteries must be replaced immediately. Discharged vehicle batteries can even freeze at temperatures of around ooc (+32°F).
• In vehicles with a second battery under the driver's seta or a third battery in the lug-gage compartment, ensure that the gas dis-charge hose is connected properly to the ve-hicle battery.
• Do not allow direct sunlight onto the vehicle battery for an extended period as the UV rays could damage the battery housing.
• If the vehicle is left standing in cold condi-tions for a long period, protect the vehicle bat-tery from frost. If it freezes it wilt be damaged.
• Vehicles with a starUstop system are fitted with a special vehicle battery. The installation of a different vehicle battery could cause prob-lems with the vehicle electronics. When replac-ing the vehicle battery, only insert a battery with specifications that correspond exactly with those of the original battery.
W After starting the engine with a discharged L!J vehicle battery, or after the battery has been changed, system settings (time, date, personal convenience settings and programming) may have been changed or deleted. Check and correct the settings as necessary once the vehicle battery has been sufficiently charged. In the engine compartment 363
