• He/she is wearing loose-fitting clothing that may obscure body contours
• The bike is approaching your vehicle fromthe side

• The bike is carrying large objects
• Most of the cyclist's body or the bikeitself cannot be "seen" by the system'scamera

The system cannot identify all pedestrians
The Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake system can only identify and detect apedestrian who is standing upright. This personcan be standing still, walking or running. This means that the system has to be able to identify a person's head, arms, shoulders, legs,the upper and lower parts of the body and a per-son's pattern of movement when walking or run-ning. If parts of the body are not visible to the camera, the system cannot detect the pedestrian. The following conditions apply:
• In order to detect a pedestrian, the system must have a full view of the person's entire

208 body and the person must be at least 32 in. (80 cm) tall.
• The system cannot detect a pedestrian carry-ing a large object.
• The camera's capacity to see a pedestrian atdawn or dusk is limited, much as it is for thehuman eye.
• The camera's function is deactivated and willnot detect a pedestrian in darkness or in tun-nels, even if there is street lighting in thearea.

Strong sunlight, reflections, extreme light con- trasts, the use of sunglasses, or if the driver is notlooking straight ahead may make the visual warn-ing signal in the windshield difficult to see. Forthis reason, always activate the audible warningsignal. Slippery driving conditions increase braking dis- tance, which can reduce the system's capacity toavoid a collision. In these conditions, the ABS andstability systems provide the best possible brak-ing effect while helping to maintain stability.
NOTE
The visual warning signal may be temporarily disengaged in the event of high passengercompartment temperature due to strong sun-light, etc. If this occurs, the audible warningsignal will be used, even if it has been deacti-vated in the menu system.

Park Assist Pilot (PAP)* –
introduction
The Park Assist Pilot provides assistance when parallel parking by measuring the parking spaceand turning the steering wheel.

Park Assist Pilot (PAP) is a semi-automatic sys- tem that provides assistance when parallel park-ing by:
• Finding a parking space and determining if itis big enough for the vehicle
• Helping to steer the vehicle into the parkingspace
Information about the actions required of thedriver is provided in the instrument panel in theform of symbols, images and text.
NOTE
If a trailer hitch is configured in the vehicle's electrical system, PAP will take the trailerhitch into consideration when determining thenecessary size of a parking space.
WARNING
• PAP does not function in all situations and is only intended to assist the driverwhen parallel parking.
• As the driver, you have full responsibilityfor parking the vehicle in a safe manner.

Park Assist Pilot (PAP)

PAP's function is to measure the parking space and to turn the steering wheel during the parallelparking procedure. The driver is responsible forfollowing the instructions shown in the instru- ment panel and for: shifting between R (Reverse)
and D (Drive) when required, regulating the vehi-
cle's speed, applying the brakes and stopping the vehicle. PAP can be activated in the following conditions:
• When the stability or ABS systems are not working actively
• The vehicle is not towing a trailer
• The vehicle's speed is below 30 mph(50 km/h)
How PAP works

The PAP parking procedure will be cancelled if.
• The vehicle's speed goes above approxi- mately 4 mph 7 km/h
• The driver moves the steering wheel
• If the stability or ABS systems are activated(e.g., if a wheel starts to spin because of aslippery road surface
If the system has been switched off, this will beindicated by a text message in the instrumentpanel.
NOTE
• PAP will not function correctly if its sen- sors are obstructed by dirt, snow, etc.
• In certain situations, PAP may not be ableto measure a parking space. This couldbe due to external sources of sound (e.g.,a vehicle's horn, tires on wet asphalt,pneumatic brakes, noise from a motorcy-cle's exhaust, etc.) emitting ultrasoundusing approximately the same frequen-cies as PAP.
Information to keep in mind
PAP is only intended to provide parallel parking assistance but may not be able to function fully inall situations. •
PAP's function is based on the way that thevehicles are parked behind and in front ofyour parking space. If they are, for example,parked too close to the curb, there is a riskthat your vehicle's tires or wheel rims couldbe damaged by the curb during the parkingprocedure.
• PAP is intended to provide parking assis-tance on straight streets, not sections ofstreet with curved or irregular curbs. Be surethat your vehicle is parallel to the curb whenPAP measures the parking space.
• PAP may not be able to provide parkingassistance on narrow streets due to lack ofspace to maneuver the vehicle. In situationslike this, it may help to drive as close to theside of the road as possible where the park-ing space is located.
• Use only approved tires with the correct infla-tion pressure because this affects PAP'scapacity to provide parking assistance.Changing to a different approved tire sizemay affect PAP's parameters. Consult atrained and qualified Volvo service technician.
• Heavy rain or snow may inhibit PAP'scapacity to correctly measure a parkingspace.
• Do not use PAP if snow chains or a tempo-rary spare tire is being used.
• Do not use PAP if there are any objects pro-truding from the vehicle.
WARNING
• The front end of your vehicle may turn out toward oncoming traffic during the park-ing procedure.
• Objects located above the parking sen-sors' field of vision are not included whenPAP measures a parking space. For thisreason, PAP may turn into the parkingspace too soon. Avoid parking spaces ofthis type.
• The driver is always responsible for deter-mining if PAP has selected a suitableparking space.

Rear Park Assist Camera (PAC) – introductionThe Park Assist Camera is designed to provide the driver with a view of the area behind the vehi-cle when backing up.
IntroductionPAC uses the display in the center console to show the area behind the car while you are back-ing up. PAC also shows guiding lines in the on-screen image to indicate the direction that the vehiclewill take as it moves rearward, which helps sim-plify parallel parking, backing into a tight space orwhen attaching a trailer to the vehicle. The images of vehicles in this section are generic and may not depict your specific model.
NOTE
A trailer hitch whose wiring is integrated with the vehicle's electrical system will be takeninto account when measuring the availablespace behind the vehicle.

BLIS * – function
When does BLIS functionThe system functions when your vehicle is mov- ing at speeds above 6 mph (10 km/h).
Zone 1. Blind area, Zone 2. Area for passing vehicles
BLIS is designed to react to: • Other vehicles in your door mirrors' "blind area"
• Vehicles that are passing your vehicle
When BLIS detects a vehicle in zone 1 or a pass-ing vehicle in zone 2, the indicator light in thedoor panel will glow steadily. If the driver thenuses the turn signal on the side on which thewarning is given, the indicator light will flash andbecome brighter.

BLIS* – Cross Traffic Alert (CTA)
Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) is a supplementary BLIS 15
function intended to detect vehicles
crossing behind your vehicle while you are back- ing up.
Park assist/CTA button
On vehicles equipped with the optional Park assist system (p. 231), Cross Traffic Alert (CTA)can be deactivated/reactivated by pressing thePark assist button on the center console. TheBLIS indicator lights on the front doors will flashwhen CTA is reactivated by pressing the button.

When does CTA function
How CTA works
CTA supplements BLIS by warning the driver of crossing traffic behind your vehicle, for example,when backing out of a parking space. It is primarily designed to detect another vehicle but in certain cases may also detect pedestriansor smaller objects such as bicycles. CTA is only activated when the vehicle is backing up and is activated automatically when the gearselector is put in reverse.
• An audible signal indicates that CTA hasdetected something that is approaching fromthe side. The signal will come from either theleft or right audio system speakers, depend-ing on which the side of your vehicle theapproaching vehicle/object has beendetected.
• CTA also provides a warning by illuminatingthe BLIS indicator lights.
• An icon will also illuminate in the Park assistgraphic on the center console display.
LimitationsCTA has limitations in certain situations, forexample, the CTA sensors cannot "see" throughother parked vehicles or obstructions. The following are several examples where CTA's "field of vision" may initially be limited andapproaching vehicles cannot be detected untilthey are too close:

While driving
•If you select the manual shifting position while driving, the gear that was being used inthe Drive position will also initially beselected in the manual shifting position.
• Move the gear selector forward (toward
+) to
shift to a higher gear or rearward (toward –)
to shift to a lower gear.
• If you hold the gear selector toward "
–", the
transmission will downshift one gear at atime and will utilize the braking power of theengine. If the current speed is too high forusing a lower gear, the downshift will notoccur until the speed has decreased enoughto allow the lower gear to be used.
• If you slow to a very low speed, the transmis-sion will automatically shift down.
Shiftlock: Neutral (N)
If the gear selector is in the
N position and the
vehicle has been stationary for at least 3 seconds (irrespective of whether the engine is running)then the gear selector is locked. In order to move the gear selector from N to
another gear position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition must be in at least position II, see Ignition modes (p. 74).
Geartronic : steering wheel paddles *
In addition to the manual gearshift function using the gear selector, this option makes it possible tomanually shift gears from the steering wheel.
Steering-wheel mounted gear shift paddles
"– ": Shift down to a lower gear.
"+ ": Shift up to a higher gear.
In order to shift gears with the paddles, they have to first be activated. The gear selector can be
in either the D or S position. Activating the paddles:
• Pull either paddle toward the steering wheel and release it; the
D in the instrument panel
will change to the number of the gear cur- rently being used. Shifting gears:
• Pull the paddle toward the steering wheeland release it.
Deactivating the paddles:
• Hold the "
+" paddle for approximately
3 seconds.
NOTE
If the gear selector was in D when paddle
shifting was activated ( D changed to the
number of the gear being used), the transmis- sion will automatically revert to D after
approximately 5 seconds if the paddles are not used to shift gears. This will not occur:

•during active driving (e.g., on a winding road, while accelerating, etc)
• if the gear selector was in
S when the
paddles were activated
If the transmission reverts to D, the paddles
will have to be reactivated (pull either paddletoward the steering wheel and release it)before they can be used to shift gears again. The paddles can also be manually deactivated by pulling both paddles toward the steeringwheel and holding them until the gear num-ber shown in the instrument panel changes to D .
Geartronic : Sport mode ( S)7
This transmission mode provides sportier shifting characteristics and enables a more active drivingstyle by making it possible to drive at higher rpmin each gear before shifting up. The engine alsoresponds faster when the accelerator pedal ispressed. To access Sport mode from Drive (
D), move the
gear selector to the left. The transmission will not switch to manual shifting mode until the gearselector is moved forward or rearward toward +or –. Sport mode can be selected any time.
NOTE
• On vehicles equipped with Sport mode, the transmission symbol in the main instrument panel will change from
D to S
when the gear selector is moved to the manual shifting mode. If the gear selectoris moved toward "+" or "-", the number ofthe gear currently being used will be dis-played, see Information displays – intro-duction (p. 63).
• Please be aware that using Sport modemay result in a slight decrease in fuel economy. Driving in
D can help improve
fuel economy.

ECO*
Eco is a function 10
developed by Volvo to give
the driver the opportunity to actively drive more economically and to help reduce fuel consump-tion.
IntroductionWhen Eco is activated, the fol- lowing functions are modified:
• The automatic transmission's shifting points
• The engine management system and accel- erator pedal response
• Stop/stop function (Start/Stop – introduction(p. 262)): the engine can auto-stop beforethe vehicle has come to a full stop
• Eco Coast functionality is activated: enginebraking is disabled
• Climate system settings: certain functions(e.g., air conditioning) will be temporarilyreduced or deactivated
NOTE
When Eco is activated, several climate system parameters are changed and the function ofcertain current-consuming systems will bereduced. Some of these functions can be restarted manually but full functionality will not berestored until Eco is deactivated.

When the engine is switched off, ECO is deacti- vated and must be reactivated each time theengine is started (with the exception of certainengines). The
ECO symbol will be displayed in the instru-
ment panel and the indicator light in the ECO
button will be on when Eco is activated.
Eco on or offWhen ECO is deactivated, theECO symbol will not be dis-
played in the instrument panel and the indicator light in the ECO button will be off. The
function will remain deactivated until the button is pressedagain.
Eco CoastEco Coast is an integral part of the Eco function and essentially deactivates engine braking, allow-ing the vehicle to roll freely.
NOTE
To function optimally, Eco Coast should pri- marily be used when the vehicle can coast asfar as possible.
When the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the transmission is automatically disengagedfrom the engine and engine rpm will be reducedto the idle level (approx. 700-800 rpm), whichhelps reduce fuel consumption.
