Unlock – Press the Unlock button on the
remote once to unlock the driver's door. After a short pause, press the Unlock button a second time within 10 seconds to unlock theother doors and the trunk. This function can be changed so that all doors unlock at the same time by pressing My Car and
going to

Approach lighting – As you approach the
vehicle, press the button on the remote key to light the interior lighting, parking lights, license plate lighting and the lights in the door mirrors *.
These lights will switch off automatically after 30, 60 or 90 seconds. For a description of the menusystem, see My Car – introduction (p. 71).
Unlock/open trunk
Press once: This unlocks the trunk (but does
not open it) and disarms the alarm (the alarm indicator light on the dashboard will go out). If thetrunk is not opened within two minutes it willautomatically relock and the alarm will berearmed. Press twice: This both unlocks the trunk and
pops it open slightly.
NOTE
Any excess weight (snow, etc.) on the trunk lid may prevent it from opening.
For information on opening the trunk from the passenger compartment, see Locking/unlocking– trunk (p. 160). After closing, the trunk will not automatically relock. Press Lock to relock it and rearm thealarm.
Panic alarm – This button can be used to
attract attention during emergency situations. To activate the panic alarm, press and hold this button for at least 3 seconds or press it twicewithin 3 seconds. The turn signals and horn willbe activated. The panic alarm will stop automati-cally after 2 minutes and 45 seconds. To deactivate, wait approximately 5 seconds and press the button again. The Panic alarm button will not unlock the vehi- cle.

Remote key – range The remote key has a range of approximately 60 ft. (20 m) from the vehicle.
NOTE
Buildings or other obstacles may interfere with the function of the remote key. The vehi-cle can also be locked or unlocked with thekey blade, see Alarm-related functions(p. 164).
If the remote key is removed from the vehicle while the engine is running or if the ignition is in mode
I or II and all of the doors are closed, a
message will appear in the instrument panel dis- play and there will be an audible signal. When the remote key is returned to the vehicle, the message will be erased and the audible sig-nal will stop after one of the following has beendone:
• The remote key is inserted in the ignition slot
• The vehicle's speed exceeds 20 mph(30 km/h)
• The
OK button on the left steering wheel

WARNING
People with implanted pacemakers should not allow the pacemaker to come closer than9 inches (22 cm) to any of the keyless drivesystem's antennas. This is to help preventinterference between the pacemaker and thekeyless drive system.

Locking/unlocking – from the outside
The remote key (p. 144) is used to lock/unlock all of the doors and the trunk at the same time.Different settings for unlocking the vehicle canbe selected, see Remote key – functions(p. 147). Before the vehicle can be locked from the out- side with the remote key, the driver's door mustbe closed. If the trunk or any other door is open,it will be locked and the alarm will be armed.
NOTE
Be sure the remote key is outside of the vehi- cle before the other doors/trunk are closed tohelp avoid locking the remote inside the vehi-cle.
If the vehicle is equipped with the optional key- less drive system, all doors/trunk must be closedbefore the vehicle can be locked. The first press on the unlock button unlocks the driver's door and a second press unlocks theother doors and the trunk (see also remote keyand key blade (p. 144)). This setting can be changed in the menu system. See MY
CAR (p. 71) for a description.
If the locks repeatedly do not react when the unlock button is pressed, it may be necessary toreplace the battery in the remote, see Remote key – replacing the battery (p. 151). In this casethe vehicle can be unlocked with the detachablekey blade (p. 150).

•Adaptive Cruise Control cannot cover all driving situations and traffic, weather androad conditions. The "Function" sectionprovides information about limitations thatthe driver must be aware of before usingthis feature.
• This system is designed to be a supple-mentary driving aid. It is not, however,intended to replace the driver's attentionand judgement. set speed to maintaining
a set distance from that vehi-
cle.
When this happens, a speed range will be indicated on the
speedometer: The higher speed (the cur-
rently set speed (5)) will be marked in green.
The lower speed in the range is the speed of the
vehicle ahead.
Changing the set speed
• After a speed has been set, it can be increased or decreased by briefly pressing the
or buttons. Each time one of
these buttons is pressed, the vehicle's speed changes by 5 mph or 5 km/h. If the speed isincreased by pressing the accelerator pedal,the vehicle's speed when the button ispressed will be set.
• Press and hold one of these buttons toincrease/decrease the speed in 1-mph or 1-km/h increments. Release the button whenyou have reached the desired speed.
NOTE
•
If one of the Adaptive Cruise Control but- tons is pressed for more than approxi-mately one minute, ACC will be deacti-vated. The engine must then be switchedoff and restarted to reset ACC.
• In some situations Adaptive Cruise Con- trol cannot be put in active mode.

zontal bars. The greater the number of bars, the longer thetime interval. One bar repre-sents a time interval of approxi-
mately 1 second; 5 bars is approximately3 seconds.
To set/change a time interval:
• Press the
/ buttons (3).
At low speeds, when the distance to the vehicle ahead is short, ACC increases the time intervalslightly. In order to follow the vehicle ahead assmoothly as possible, ACC allows the time inter-val to vary considerably in certain situations.
WARNING
• Only use a time interval that is suitable in current traffic conditions.
• A short time interval gives the driver lim-ited reaction time if an unexpected situa-tion occurs in traffic.

WARNING
The vehicle may accelerate quickly after has been pressed if its current speed is con- siderably lower than the set speed.
Standby mode due to action by the driver
ACC is temporarily deactivated and put in standby mode:
• if the brakes are applied
• if the gear selector is moved to
N
• if the driver drives faster than the set speed for more than
1 minute.
In this happens, the driver will have to regulate
the vehicle's speed.
NOTE
If the accelerator pedal is only depressed for a short time, such as when passing anothervehicle, ACC is deactivated temporarily and isreactivated when the pedal is released.
Automatic standby modeACC is linked to other systems such as the sta- bility system. If this system is not functioningproperly, ACC will switch off automatically.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – Queue AssistQueue Assist is an added ACC feature that is linked to your vehicle's automatic transmission.
IntroductionQueue Assist is an added ACC feature that is linked to your vehicle's automatic transmission. Queue Assist consists of the following functions:
• Enhanced speed interval (including when the vehicle is at a complete stop or is moving atspeed below 18 mph (30 km/h))
• Automatic standby mode when ACC changestarget vehicles
• No automatic braking when at a standstill
• The parking brake is applied automatically
Please note that the lowest speed that can beset is 18 mph (30 km/h), although ACC canmaintain a set speed/distance to a vehicle aheaddown to a standstill. Queue Assist consists of thefollowing features:
Enhanced speed interval
NOTE
The driver's door must be closed and the driv- er's seat belt must be fastened before ACCcan be put in active mode. If the driver's seatbelt is taken off or if the driver's door isopened, ACC will return to standby mode.
Your vehicle can maintain the set time interval to the vehicle ahead at any permissible speed,including a complete stop. In order to activate ACC at speeds below 18 mph (30 km/h):
• The vehicle ahead must be within a reasona-ble distance (not farther away than approx.100 ft/30 meters)
• The lowest speed that can be selected is18 mph (30 km/h), although ACC will alsohelp maintain the set time interval to thevehicle ahead at lower speeds, including acomplete stop.
During short stops (less than approximately3 seconds) in slow-moving traffic, your vehiclewill begin moving again automatically as soon asthe vehicle ahead begins to move. If it takes more than 3 seconds for the vehicle ahead to begin moving, ACC will be automaticallygo into standby mode. The driver will then have to reactivate ACC in oneof the following ways: •
By pressing
• By accelerating up to at least 3 mph (4 km/h). ACC will then resume following thevehicle ahead.
Your vehicle will then resume following the vehi-cle ahead at the set time interval.
NOTE
ACC can remain active and keep your vehicle at a standstill for up to 4 minutes. After4 minutes have elapsed, the parking brakewill be engaged and ACC will go into standbymode. To reactivate ACC, the driver must release the parking brake (see Parking brake – generalinformation (p. 271)).

Collision warning – introduction Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake is designed to assist the driver if there is arisk of a collision with a pedestrian, a cyclist, avehicle ahead that is at a standstill or one that ismoving in the same direction as your vehicle.
This system consists of the following three func- tions:
• Collision Warning
warns the driver of a
potential collision situation.
• Brake Support
helps the driver brake effi-
ciently in a critical situation.
• Auto-brake
brakes the vehicle automatically
if a collision with a pedestrian, a cyclist oranother vehicle cannot be avoided and thedriver does not apply the brakes in time orsteer around the person/vehicle. Auto-brakecan help prevent a collision or reduce thespeed at which a collision occurs.
Since Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with FullAuto Brake is activated in circumstances wherethe driver should have begun braking muchsooner, the system will not be able to assist thedriver in all situations. This system is designed to activate as late as possible to help avoid unnecessary intervention. The system should not be used in such a way that the driver changes his/her way of operatingthe vehicle. If the driver relies entirely on the sys- tem, the chances of an accident eventually occur-ring increase considerably. The Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake and City Safety
™ systems supple-
ment each other. See City Safety – introduction (p. 194) for detailed information about City Safety ™.

No automatic system can be guaranteed to function 100% correctly in all situations. Forthat reason, never test the Auto-brake systemby driving toward a person or object. Thiscould result in serious injury or death.

Transmission – Geartronic
Geartronic allows you to manually shift among your vehicle's forward gears. The manual posi-tion ( +S–) can be selected at any time.
Geartronic: manual shifting (+S–)To shift gears manually, move the gear selector to the side from D toward

panel will change from white to
orange and the number of the gear currently
being used (
1, 2, 3, etc.) will be displayed (see

This option indicates when to shift up or down to help conserve fuel. A white arrow will appearabove or below the number of the current gear toprompt the driver to shift up or down.
While driving
•
If you select the manual shifting position while driving, the gear that was being used inthe Drive position will also initially beselected in the manual shifting position.
• Move the gear selector forward (toward
+) to
shift to a higher gear or rearward (toward –)
to shift to a lower gear.
• If you hold the gear selector toward "
–", the
transmission will downshift one gear at atime and will utilize the braking power of the engine. If the current speed is too high forusing a lower gear, the downshift will notoccur until the speed has decreased enoughto allow the lower gear to be used.
• If you slow to a very low speed, the transmis-sion will automatically shift down.
Shiftlock: Neutral (N)
If the gear selector is in the
N position and the
vehicle has been stationary for at least 3 seconds (irrespective of whether the engine is running)then the gear selector is locked. In order to move the gear selector from N to
another gear position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition must be in at least position II, see Ignition modes (p. 74).

Geartronic: Sport mode ( S)7
This transmission mode provides sportier shifting characteristics and enables a more active drivingstyle by making it possible to drive at higher rpmin each gear before shifting up. The engine alsoresponds faster when the accelerator pedal ispressed. To access Sport mode from Drive (
D), move the
gear selector to the left. The transmission will not switch to manual shifting mode until the gearselector is moved forward or rearward toward +or –. Sport mode can be selected any time.
NOTE
• On vehicles equipped with Sport mode, the transmission symbol in the main instrument panel will change from
D to S
when the gear selector is moved to the manual shifting mode. If the gear selectoris moved toward "+" or "-", the number ofthe gear currently being used will be dis-played, see Information displays – intro-duction (p. 63).
• Please be aware that using Sport modemay result in a slight decrease in fuel economy. Driving in
D can help improve
fuel economy.

ECO*
Eco is a function 10
developed by Volvo to give
the driver the opportunity to actively drive more economically and to help reduce fuel consump-tion.
IntroductionWhen Eco is activated, the fol- lowing functions are modified:
• The automatic transmission's shifting points
• The engine management system and accel- erator pedal response
• Stop/stop function (Start/Stop – introduction(p. 260)): the engine can auto-stop beforethe vehicle has come to a full stop
• Eco Coast functionality is activated: enginebraking is disabled
• Climate system settings: certain functions(e.g., air conditioning) will be temporarilyreduced or deactivated
NOTE
When Eco is activated, several climate system parameters are changed and the function ofcertain current-consuming systems will bereduced. Some of these functions can be restarted manually but full functionality will not berestored until Eco is deactivated.

When the engine is switched off, ECO is deacti- vated and must be reactivated each time theengine is started (with the exception of certainengines). The
ECO symbol will be displayed in the instru-
ment panel and the indicator light in the ECO
button will be on when Eco is activated.
Eco on or offWhen ECO is deactivated, theECO symbol will not be dis-
played in the instrument panel and the indicator light in the ECO button will be off. The
function will remain deactivated until the button is pressedagain.
Eco CoastEco Coast is an integral part of the Eco function and essentially deactivates engine braking, allow-ing the vehicle to roll freely.
NOTE
To function optimally, Eco Coast should pri- marily be used when the vehicle can coast asfar as possible.
When the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the transmission is automatically disengagedfrom the engine and engine rpm will be reducedto the idle level (approx. 700-800 rpm), whichhelps reduce fuel consumption.
