WARNING
•Never stand next to the tire being inflated when the compressor is in operation.
• If cracks, bubbles, etc. form on the tire,switch off the compressor immediately.
• If there is visible damage to the sidewall orthe rim, the tire cannot be repaired. Thevehicle should not be driven if this occurs.Contact a towing service, use the Volvo OnCall feature in your vehicle or contact VolvoRoadside Assistance if applicable.
NOTE
The air pressure gauge will temporarily show an increase in pressure to approximately88 psi (6 bar) while the sealing compound isbeing pumped into the tire. The pressureshould return to a normal level after approxi-mately 30 seconds.
9. Within seven minutes, inflate the tire to
between 22—44 psi (1.8—3.0 bar). Switch off the compressor briefly to get a clearreading from the pressure gauge.
CAUTION
The compressor should not be used for more than 10 minutes at a time to avoid overheat-ing.
WARNING
If the pressure remains below 22 psi (1.8 bar) after approximately seven minutes, turn offthe compressor. In this case, the hole is toolarge to be sealed and the vehicle should notbe driven.
10. Switch off the compressor and disconnect the electrical wire from the 12-volt socket.
11. Unscrew the hose from the tire's inflation valve and put the cover on the hose back into place to help prevent seepage of residualsealing compound in the hose. Reinstall thevalve cap.
CAUTION
•After inflating the tires, always reinstall the valve cap to help avoid damage to thevalve from dirt, gravel, etc.
• Use plastic valve caps only. Metal capscould corrode and become difficult toremove.
12. Immediately drive the vehicle for approxi-
mately 2 miles (3 km) at a maximum speed of 50 mph (80 km/h) to distribute the seal-ing compound in the tire.
CAUTION
If your vehicle is equipped with the Tire Pres- sure Monitoring System (TPMS), the use ofthe sealing compound may lead to incorrecttire pressure readings or in rare cases, dam-age to the tire pressure sensor. Use the tiresealing system to check and adjust the dam-aged tire's inflation pressure.
NOTE
• Safely stow the tire sealing system in a convenient place as it will soon be usedagain to check the tire

WARNING
If heavy vibrations, unsteady steering behavior, or noises should occur while driving, reducespeed and park the vehicle in a safe place.Recheck the tire for bumps, cracks, or othervisible damage, and recheck its inflation pres-sure. If the pressure is below 19 psi (1.3 bar),do not continue driving. Have the vehicletowed to a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician.
Tire sealing system – checking inflation pressure The tire sealing system can also be used to check the tires' inflation pressure.
Stage 2: Checking inflation pressure1. Reconnect the tire sealing system's hose to
the tire's inflation valve as described in stage
1 , see Tire sealing system * – sealing a hole
(p. 317).

Maintenance – introductionPeriodic maintenance will help keep your vehicle running well.
IntroductionThe maintenance services contain several checks that require special instruments and tools andtherefore must be performed by a qualified tech-nician. To keep your Volvo in top condition, spec-ify time-tested and proven Genuine Volvo Partsand Accessories.
The Federal Clean Air Act – U.S.
The Federal Clean Air Act requires vehicle manu- facturers to furnish written instructions to the ulti-mate purchaser to assure the proper servicingand function of the components that controlemissions. These services, which are listed in the"Warranty and Service Records Information"booklet, are not covered by the warranty. You willbe required to pay for labor and material used.
Maintenance
Your Volvo passed several major inspections before it was delivered to you, in accordance withVolvo specifications. The maintenance proce-dures outlined in the Warranty and ServiceRecords Information booklet, many of which willpositively affect your vehicle's emissions, shouldbe performed as indicated. It is recommendedthat receipts for vehicle emission maintenance beretained in case questions arise concerningmaintenance. Inspection and maintenance should also be performed anytime a malfunction isobserved or suspected.
Applicable warranties – U.S./Canada
In accordance with applicable U.S. and Canadian regulations, the following list of warranties is pro-vided.

Maintenance – owner maintenance
Periodic maintenance requirements and intervals are described in your vehicle's Warranty andService Records Information booklet. The following points can be carried out between the normally scheduled maintenance services.
Owner maintenance
Each time the car is refueled:
• Check the engine oil level.
• Clean the windshield, windshield wipers, headlights, and taillights.
Monthly:
• Check cold tire pressure in all tires. Inspect the tires for wear.
• Check that engine coolant and other fluidlevels are between the indicated "min" and"max" markings.
• Clean interior glass surfaces with a glasscleaner and soft paper towels.
• Wipe driver information displays with a softcloth.
• Visually inspect battery terminals for corro-sion. Corrosion may indicate a loose terminalconnector, or a battery near the end of itsuseful service life. Consult your Volvo retailerfor additional information.
As needed:
Wash the car, including the undercarriage, to reduce wear that can be caused by a buildup of dirt, and corrosion that can be caused by salt res-idues. Clean leaves and twigs from air intake vents at the base of the windshield, and from other placeswhere they may collect.

Onboard Diagnostic System OBD II is part of your vehicle's computerized engine management system. It stores diagnosticinformation about your vehicle's emission con-trols. It can light the Check Engine light (MIL) if itdetects an emission control "fault." A "fault" is acomponent or system that is not performingwithin an expected range. A fault may be perma-nent or temporary. OBD II will store a messageabout any fault.
Emission inspection readiness
How do states use OBD II for emission inspections?
Many states connect a computer directly to a vehicle's OBD II system. The inspector can thenread "faults." In some states, this type of inspec-tion has replaced the tailpipe emission test.
How can my vehicle fail OBD II emission inspection?
Your vehicle can fail OBD II emission inspection for any of the following reasons.
• If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit, yourvehicle may fail inspection.
• If your vehicle's Check Engine light was lit,but went out without any action on your part,OBD II will still have a recorded fault. Yourvehicle may pass or fail, depending on theinspection practices in your area.
• If you had recent service that required dis-connecting the battery, OBD II diagnostic information may be incomplete and "notready" for inspection. A vehicle that is notready may fail inspection.
How can I prepare for my next OBD II
emission inspection?
• If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit – or was lit but went out without service, have yourvehicle diagnosed and, if necessary, servicedby a qualified Volvo technician.
• If you recently had service for a lit CheckEngine light, or if you had service thatrequired disconnecting the battery, a periodof driving is necessary to bring the OBD IIsystem to "ready" for inspection. Two half-hour trips of mixed stop-and-go/highwaydriving are typically needed to allow OBD II toreach readiness. Your Volvo retailer can pro-vide you with more information on planning atrip.
• Maintain your vehicle in accordance with yourvehicle's maintenance schedule.
Booking service and repairs
Connected Service Booking (CSB) makes set- ting up a time for service, maintenance and/orrepairs directly from the vehicle quick and con-venient.
Prerequisites
• The owner (primary driver) must have a valid Volvo ID. See Volvo ID (p. 20) for additionalinformation.
• The vehicle must be connected to the Inter- net using a paired Bluetooth ®
cell phone.
See your Sensus Infotainment supplement for information on pairing a cell phone. On models equipped with Volvo On Call (VOC) *,
you can connect to the Internet using your separate VOC data plan. Refer to your sepa-rate Volvo On Call manual.
• By default, the retailer where you purchasedyour vehicle will be your preferred (primary)retailer/Volvo authorized workshop who willperform service and repairs on your vehicle.To change the preferred retailer, go to DealerLocator at volvocars.com and select aretailer, click on Service Scheduler and bookan appointment at the new preferred retailer.

If the time for the next regularly scheduled serv- ice is approaching, if the vehicle requires certaintypes of repairs or if a system needs to bechecked, a message will be displayed. You willthen by guided through the steps required tobook service or repairs.
On-screen service messages
On-screen service message
The pop-up service alert menu offers the follow- ing alternatives:
•
Yes: The vehicle will transmit a booking
request as well as vehicle data directly to your preferred retailer. In return, you willreceive an email from this retailer with a linkto their booking portal. From a smartphone ora computer, you can select a day and timethat suits you and specify any other servicerequests that you may have. When you havesubmitted your request, it will be entered intothe retailer's booking portal and you willreceive immediate confirmation online andvia email. The service reminder light in the vehicle's instrument panel will also be turnedoff remotely by Volvo.
•
No: No other messages will be displayed on
the Sensus screen but the Service Reminder Light on the vehicle's instrument panel willstay on. If you have answered "No", servicecan still be booked manually (see the follow-ing section).
•
Postpone: The pop-up menu will be dis-
played that next time the engine is started.
Booking service or repairs manually
Access your Volvo On-Line Service Scheduler portal from a smartphone or a computer to selecta day and time that suits you and specify anyother service requests that you may have. Whenyou have submitted your request, it will beentered into the retailer's booking portal and youwill receive immediate confirmation online and viaemail.

Transmitting vehicle dataIn order for a retailer to access vehicle data, the information is initially sent to a central Volvodatabase (not directly to your retailer) where any

retailer can access or search for this information using your vehicle's VIN number. This numbercan be found in your warranty booklet or on thedashboard at the lower left corner of the wind-shield.

Booking information and vehicle dataWhen you opt to book service from your vehicle, booking information and vehicle data will betransmitted. Vehicle data consists of a number ofparameters in the following areas:
• Service requirements
• Function status

• Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
• The vehicle's software version

Maintenance – opening/closing hood The hood is opened by first releasing the lock from the passenger compartment and thenpressing the release control.
Opening and closing the hood
Turn the handle located under the left side of the dash approximately 20-25 degreesclockwise to release the hood lock.
Lift the hood slightly. Press the release con- trol (located under the right front edge of thehood) to the left, and lift the hood.
WARNING
Check that the hood locks properly when closed.

Engine compartment – engine oil
The correct oil must be used for the stated oil change (service) intervals to apply. The oil level on 4-cylinder engines is checked electronically and is checked using a dipstick on5- and 6-cylinder engines.
Checking the engine oil (5- and 6-
cylinder engines)
The oil level should be checked at regular inter- vals, particularly during the period up to the firstscheduled maintenance service.
• See Oil specifications (p. 374) for oil specifi-cations.
• Also, refer to the Warranty and ServiceRecords information booklet for informationon oil change intervals and oil specifications.
CAUTION
•
Not checking the oil level regularly can result in serious engine damage if the oillevel becomes too low.
• Oil that is lower than the specified qualitycan damage the engine.
• Volvo does not recommend the use of oiladditives.
• Always add oil of the same type and vis-cosity as already used.
• Never fill oil above the
MAX mark. This
could cause an increase in oil consump-tion.
• Oil changes should be carried out by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.

Message
Oil level
The oil level can be checked when the engine is not running by scrolling to the oil level sensorusing the thumb wheel on the left steering wheellever.
CAUTION
• If Oil service required is displayed, the
oil level may be too high. Take the vehicle to an authorized Volvo workshop as soonas possible.
• If the oil level sensor indicates that thelevel is too low, using the correct oil, topup with the amount of oil indicated assoon as possible, see oil specifica-tions (p. 374).
WARNING
Do not allow oil to spill onto or come into con- tact with hot exhaust pipe surfaces.
Electronically checking the oil level
The oil level should be checked at regular inter- vals, particularly during the period up to the firstscheduled maintenance service. To check the oil level:1.
Activate ignition mode II, see Ignition modes
(p. 74).
2. Turn the thumb wheel on the left steering wheel lever until

> The oil level will be displayed.
NOTE
• The system cannot detect changes in the oil level immediately. The vehicle must bedriven approximately 20 miles (30 km) orhave been parked on level ground withthe engine off for 5 minutes before theoil level reading will be correct.
• If the necessary conditions are not metfor checking the oil level electronically(time interval after the engine wasswitched off, if the vehicle is parked on an incline, etc.),
No value available will
be displayed. This does not indicate a
problem with the oil level sensor.

Engine compartment – coolant
Normally, the coolant does not need to be changed. If the system must be drained, consulta trained and qualified Volvo service technician.
Level check and filling
Location of the coolant reservoir
See Fuel tank volume – specification and volume (p. 377) for information on cooling systemcapacities.
CAUTION
• If necessary, top up the cooling system with Volvo Genuine Coolant/Antifreezeonly (a 50/50 mix of water and anti-freeze).
• Different types of antifreeze/coolant maynot be mixed.
• If the cooling system is drained, it shouldbe flushed with clean water or premixedanti-freeze before it is refilled with thecorrect mixture of water/anti-freeze.
• The cooling system must always be keptfilled to the correct level, and the level must be between the
MIN and MAX
marks. If it is not kept filled, there can be high local temperatures in the enginewhich could result in damage. Checkcoolant regularly!
• Do not top up with water only. Thisreduces the rust-protective and anti-freeze qualities of the coolant and has alower boiling point. It can also causedamage to the cooling system if it shouldfreeze.
• Do not use chlorinated tap water in thevehicle's cooling system.
• If there is coolant under the vehicle, if youdetect coolant fumes or if it necessary totop up with more than approx. 2 qts (2 lit-ers) of coolant, engine damage could
occur if the vehicle is driven. Have it towed to an authorized Volvo workshop.
WARNING
• Never remove the expansion tank cap while the engine is warm. Wait until theengine cools.
• If it is necessary to top off the coolantwhen the engine is warm, unscrew theexpansion tank cap slowly so that theoverpressure dissipates.
