City Safety steering assistance forevasive maneuver
City Safety steering assistance can help thedriver steer away from a vehicle/obstacle when itis not possible to avoid a collision by brakingalone. City Safety steering assistance is alwaysactivated and cannot be switched off.
Your vehicle swerves away
Slow-moving/stationary vehicle or obstacle.
City Safety helps provide assistance by strength-ening the driver's steering movements, but only ifthe driver has begun evasive action and the sys-tem detects that the driver's steering movementsare not sufficient to avoid a collision.
The brake system is used simultaneously to fur-ther strengthen steering movements. The func-
tion also helps stabilize the vehicle after it haspassed the obstacle.
City Safety steering assistance can detect:
vehicles
cyclists
pedestrians
large animals
WARNING
The function is supplementary driver sup-port intended to facilitate driving and helpmake it safer – it cannot handle all situa-tions in all traffic, weather and road condi-tions.
The driver is advised to read all sectionsin the Owner's Manual about this functionto learn of its limitations, which the drivermust be aware of before using the func-tion.
Driver support functions are not a substi-tute for the driver's attention and judg-ment. The driver is always responsible forensuring the vehicle is driven in a safemanner, at the appropriate speed, with anappropriate distance to other vehicles, and in accordance with current trafficrules and regulations.

City Safety steering assistance may have limitedfunctionality in certain situations and not inter-vene, e.g.:
at speeds outside the range of 50-100 km/h(30-62 mph)
if the driver does not take evasive action
if speed-dependent power steering wheelresistance is working at reduced power – e.g.during cooling due to overheating.

City Safety and delayed evasivemaneuvers
City Safety can assist the driver by automaticallybraking the vehicle when it is not possible toavoid a collision by steering alone.
City Safety assists the driver by periodicallyattempting to predict possible "escape routes" tothe sides of the vehicle in the event a slow-mov-ing or stationary vehicle were to be detected at alate stage.
Your vehicle (1) cannot detect any potential escaperoutes for veering away from the vehicle ahead (2) andmay therefore apply the brakes at an earlier stage.
Own vehicle
Slow-moving/stationary vehicles
City Safety will not intervene to automaticallyapply the brakes if it is possible for the driver toavoid a collision by steering the vehicle.

Camera and radar sensor's field of vision
The camera's field of vision is limited and in cer-tain situations, it may be unable to detect pedes-trians, large animals, cyclists or vehicles, or it maydetect them later than expected.
Vehicles that are dirty may be detected later thanclean vehicles, and in dark conditions, motorcy-cles may be detected late or not at all.
If a text message displayed in the instrumentpanel indicates that the camera/radar sensor isobstructed, it may be difficult for City Safety todetect pedestrians, large animals, cyclists, vehi-cles or lane markings in front of the vehicle. CitySafety functionality may therefore be reduced.
Text messages may not be displayed for all situa-tions in which the windshield sensors areblocked. The driver must therefore always keepthe windshield in front of the camera/radar sen-sor clean.
CAUTION
Maintenance of driver support components
may only performed by a workshop50.
Driver intervention
Backing up
City Safety is temporarily deactivated when thevehicle is backing up.
Low speed
City Safety is not activated at very low speedsunder 4 km/h (3 mph). The system will thereforenot intervene in situations in which your vehicle isapproaching another vehicle very slowly, such aswhen parking.
Active driver
Action by the driver always has priority. CitySafety will therefore not react or will react at alater stage with a warning or intervention in situa-tions in which the driver is clearly steering andoperating the accelerator pedal, even if a collisionis unavoidable.
An active and aware driving style may thereforedelay collision warnings and intervention in orderto minimize unnecessary warnings.
Other limitations
WARNING
Warnings and brake interventions can betriggered late or not at all if the traffic sit-uation or external influences prevent thecamera and radar unit from properlydetecting pedestrians, cyclists, large ani-mals or vehicles ahead of the vehicle.
To be able to detect vehicles at night, itsfront and rear lights must work and illumi-nate clearly.
The camera and radar unit have a limitedrange for pedestrians and cyclists – thesystem can provide effective warningsand brake interventions if the relativespeed is lower than 50 km/h (30 mph). For stationary or slow-moving vehicles, warnings and brake interventions areeffective at vehicle speeds of up to70 km/h (43 mph). Speed reduction forlarge animals is less than 15 km/h(9 mph) and can be achieved at vehiclespeeds over 70 km/h (43 mph). At lowerspeeds, the warning and brake interven-tion for large animals is less effective.
Warnings for stationary or slow-movingvehicles and large animals can be disen-gaged due to darkness or poor visibility.
50An authorized Volvo workshop is recommended.

Warnings and brake interventions forpedestrians and cyclists are disengagedat vehicle speeds over 80 km/h(50 mph).
Do not place, affix or mount anything onthe inside or outside of the windshield, orin front of or around the camera andradar unit – this could disrupt camera-based functions.
Objects, snow, ice or dirt in the area ofthe camera sensor can reduce the func-tion, disengage it completely or give animproper function response.
NOTE
The function uses the vehicle's camera andradar sensor, which has certain general limita-tions.

The vehicle is moving erratically in the lane.
If driving behavior becomesconsiderably erratic, the driverwill be alerted by this symbol inthe instrument panel, an audi-ble signal and the messageTime for a break.
If the vehicle is equipped with SensusNavigation* and the Rest Stop Guidance func-tion is activated, suggestions will also be providedfor suitable places to take a break.
The warning will be repeated after a short time ifdriving behavior does not improve.
WARNING
Driver Alert Control must not be used toextend a period of driving. The driver shouldplan in breaks at regular intervals and makesure they are well rested.

WARNING
An alarm from Driver Alert Control should betaken very seriously since a sleepy driver isoften not aware of their own condition.
If the alarm sounds or you feel fatigued:
Stop the vehicle safely as soon as possi-ble and rest.
Studies have shown that it is just as danger-ous to drive while tired as it is to drive underthe influence of alcohol or other stimulants.

Lane Keeping Aid
Lane Keeping Aid (LKA80) is designed toactively steer the vehicle on freeways, highwaysand other major roads to help the driver reducethe risk of the vehicle unintentionally veering outof the lane.
Lake Keeping Assistance steers the vehicle backinto the lane and/or alerts the driver using vibra-tions in the steering wheel.
Lane Keeping Aid is active at speeds between65–200 km/h (40–125 mph) on roads withclearly visible traffic lane marker lines.
On narrow roads, the function may be unavailableand go into standby mode. The function willbecome available again when the road becomessufficiently wide.
A camera monitors the road/traffic lane's marker lines.
Lane Keeping Aid steers the vehicle back into its lane.
Lane Keeping Aid alerts the driver using vibrations in thesteering wheel.
Depending on the settings used, Lane KeepingAid functions in different ways:
Assist enabled: When the vehicleapproaches a lane marker line, the functionwill actively steer the vehicle back into thelane using light pressure on the steeringwheel.
Warning enabled: If the vehicle is about tomove over a lane marker line, the driver willbe alerted by vibrations in the steering wheel.
NOTE
When the direction indicators/turn signals areactivated, the Lane Keeping Aid does not pro-vide any warning or intervene with steering.
