still displayed, the vehicle should not be driven and must be towed. Concealed faultsmay make the vehicle difficult to control.
Moving the vehicle
If the message Normal mode is displayed
when Safety mode See manual is no longer
displayed, the vehicle may be moved care- fully from its present position, if for example,it is blocking traffic. It should, however, notbe moved farther than is absolutely neces-sary.
WARNING
Even if the vehicle appears to be drivable after Safety mode has been set, it shouldnot be driven or towed (pulled by anothervehicle). There may be concealed damagethat could make it difficult or impossible tocontrol. The vehicle should be transportedon a flatbed tow truck to a trained andqualified Volvo service technician forinspection/repairs.

Unlocking/opening the trunk from the passenger compartment
–Press the button on the lighting panel (1) to unlock and pop open the trunk
NOTE
The taillights will illuminate automatically for a short period when the trunk has beenopened.
Locking the trunk with the remote key–Press the lock button on the remote, see page 57
The alarm indicator on the dashboard willbegin flashing to show that the vehicle islocked and that the alarm has been armed.
NOTE
• If the doors are locked while the trunk is open, the trunk will remain unlockeduntil the vehicle is relocked by press-ing the Lock button on the remote key.
• On keyless drive vehicles, the gearselector must be in the Park (
P) posi-
tion, all doors and the trunk must beclosed and the ignition must beswitched off before the vehicle can belocked.

Opening the trunk from the inside
The vehicle is equipped with a florescent han- dle on the inside of the trunk lid, which canbe used in an emergency situation to open the trunk from the inside. Pull the handledown to release the trunk lid. After use, thehandle must be pushed back into its originalposition before the trunk can be closed. This handle is not intended to be used to anchor the trunk lid when long loads arebeing transported.
WARNING

Keep vehicle doors and trunk locked and keep keys out of a child’s reach.Unsupervised children could lockthemselves in an open trunk and riskinjury. Children should be taught not toplay in vehicles.
• On hot days, the temperature in thetrunk or vehicle interior can rise veryquickly. Exposure of people to thesehigh temperatures for even a shortperiod of time can cause heat-relatedinjury or death. Small children are par-ticularly at risk.

Warning symbols
Function checkAll indicator and warning symbols light up in ignition mode II or when the engine is started.
When the engine has started, all the symbolsshould go out except the parking brake sym-bol, which only goes out when the brake isdisengaged. If the engine does not start or if the function check is carried out in ignition mode II, all
symbols go out after 5 seconds except themalfunction indicator light, which may indi- cate a fault in the vehicle's emissions system,and the symbol for low oil pressure. Some of the symbols shown may not be available in all markets or models.

Malfunction Indicator Light
As you drive, a computer called On-Board Diagnostics II (OBDII) monitors your vehicle'sengine, transmission, electrical and emissionsystems. The malfunction indicator light will illuminate if the computer senses a condition that poten-tially may need correcting. When this hap-pens, please have your vehicle checked by atrained and qualified Volvo service technicianas soon as possible. A malfunction indicator light may have many causes. Sometimes, you may not notice a

change in your car's behavior. Even so, an uncorrected condition could hurt fuel econ-omy, emission controls, and drivability.Extended driving without correcting the causecould even damage other components inyour vehicle. This light may illuminate if the fuel filler cap is not closed tightly or if the engine was runningwhile the vehicle was refueled.
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
If the warning light comes on, there may be a malfunction in the ABS system (the standardbraking system will still function). Check thesystem by:
1. Stopping in a safe place and switching off
the ignition.
2. Restart the engine.
3. If the warning light goes off, no further action is required.
If the indicator light remains on, the vehicle should be driven to a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician for inspection, seepage 135 for additional information.
Rear fog lights
This symbol indicates that the rear fog lights are on.
Stability system
This indicator symbol flashes when the DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control sys-tem) is actively working to stabilize the vehi-cle, see page 144 for more detailed informa-tion.
Sport mode
This symbol illuminates to indicate that the stability system's Sport mode has been acti-
vated to help provide maximum tractive force,for example when driving with snow chains,or driving in deep snow or loose sand.
Low fuel level
When this light comes on, the vehicle should be refueled as soon as possible. See page279 for information about fuel and refueling.
Information symbol
The information symbol lights up and a text message is displayed to provide the driverwith necessary information about one of thevehicle's systems. The message can beerased and the symbol can be turned off bypressing the OK button (see page 199 for
information) or this will take place automati-cally after a short time (the length of time var-ies, depending on the function affected). The information symbol may also illuminate together with other symbols.
High beam indicator
This symbol illuminates when the high beam headlights are on, or if the high beam flashfunction is used.
Left turn signal indicator

NOTE
• Both turn signal indicators will flash when the hazard warning flashers areused.
• If either of these indicators flash fasterthan normal, the direction indicatorsare not functioning properly.
Tire pressure monitoring system

Warning symbol
The red warning symbol lights up to indicate a problem related to safety and/or drivability.A message will also appear in the instrumentpanel. The symbol remains visible until thefault has been rectified but the text messagecan be cleared with the OK button, see page 199. The warning symbol can alsocome on in conjunction with other symbols. Action:
1. Stop in a safe place. Do not drive the
vehicle further.
2. Read the information on the information display. Implement the action in accord- ance with the message in the display.Clear the message using OK.
Reminder – doors not closedIf one of the doors is not closed properly, the
information or warning symbol illuminates
(depending on the vehicle's speed), a graphic will be displayed in instrument panel and an explanatory text message 2
will also be dis-
played in the instrument panel. Stop the vehi- cle in a safe place as soon as possible andclose the door.
If the vehicle is driven at a speedlower than approximately 5 mph(7 km/h), the information symbol illu-
minates.
If the vehicle is driven at a speed higher than approximately 5 mph(7 km/h), the warning symbol illumi-
nates.
If the hood is not closed properly, the warn-
ing symbol illuminates, a graphic will be dis-

Gear indicatorThe gear currently being used is displayed on the rightside of the instrument panel. The " S" symbol turns orange
if Sport mode is being used.
Reverse: position RThe vehicle must be stationary when position R is selected.
Neutral: position NNo gear is engaged and the engine can bestarted with the gear selector in this position.Apply the parking brake if the vehicle is sta-tionary with the gear selector in position N.
Drive: position DD is the normal driving position. The car auto-
matically shifts between the various forwardgears, based on the level of acceleration andspeed. The car must be at a standstill whenshifting from position R to position D.
Geartronic: manual shifting (+S–)Geartronic allows you to manually shiftamong your vehicle's forward gears. Gear-tronic can be selected at any time. To shift gears manually, move thegear selector to the side from
D
toward +S–. The +S– symbol in the
instrument panel will change from
white to orange and the number of the gear
currently being used (
1, 2, 3, etc.) will be dis-
played (see the following illustration).
• To return to automatic shifting mode from +S–
, move the gear selector to the side
toward D.

This option indicates when to shift up or down to help conserve fuel. A white arrow willappear above or below the number of thecurrent gear to prompt the driver to shift upor down.
While driving
• If you select the manual shifting position while driving, the gear that was beingused in the Drive position will also initiallybe selected in the manual shifting posi-tion.
• Move the gear selector forward (toward
+)
to shift to a higher gear or rearward(toward –) to shift to a lower gear.
• If you hold the gear selector toward "–",the transmission will downshift one gearat a time and will utilize the braking powerof the engine. If the current speed is toohigh for using a lower gear, the downshiftwill not occur until the speed hasdecreased enough to allow the lower gearto be used.
• If you slow to a very low speed, the trans-mission will automatically shift down.
Shiftlock: Neutral (N)If the gear selector is in the
N position and
the vehicle has been stationary for at least 3 seconds (irrespective of whether the engineis running) then the gear selector is locked. In order to move the gear selector from N to
another gear position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition must be in atleast position II, see page 84.

Geartronic: steering wheel paddles*In addition to the manual gearshift function using the gear selector, this option makes itpossible to manually shift gears from thesteering wheel.
Steering-wheel mounted gear shift paddles
" – ": Shift down to a lower gear.
"+ ": Shift up to a higher gear.
In order to shift gears with the paddles, they have to first be activated. The gear selector
can be in either the D or S position. Activating the paddles:
• Pull either paddle toward the steering wheel and release it; the
D in the instru- ment panel will change to the number ofthe gear currently being used.
Shifting gears:
• Pull the paddle toward the steering wheeland release it.
NOTE
If the gear selector was in
D when paddle
shifting was activated ( D changed to the
number of the gear being used), the trans- mission will automatically revert to D after
approximately 5 seconds if the paddlesare not used to shift gears. This will not occur:
• during active driving (e.g., on a wind- ing road, while accelerating, etc)
• if the gear selector was in
S when the
paddles were activated
If the transmission reverts to D, the pad-
dles will have to be reactivated (pull either paddle toward the steering wheel andrelease it) before they can be used to shiftgears again. The paddles can also be manually deacti- vated by pulling both paddles toward thesteering wheel and holding them until thegear number shown in the instrumentpanel changes to D.
Geartronic: Sport mode (S) 3This transmission mode provides sportier shifting characteristics and enables a moreactive driving style by making it possible todrive at higher rpm in each gear before shift-ing up. The engine also responds faster whenthe accelerator pedal is pressed. To access Sport mode from Drive (
D), move
the gear selector to the left. The transmission will not switch to manual shifting mode untilthe gear selector is moved forward or rear-ward toward + or –. Sport mode can be selected any time.
NOTE
• On vehicles equipped with Sport mode, the transmission symbol in themain instrument panel will changefrom
D to S when the gear selector is
moved to the manual shifting mode. Ifthe gear selector is moved toward "+"or "-", the number of the gear currentlybeing used will be displayed, seepage 75).
• Please be aware that using Sportmode may result in a slight decrease infuel economy. Driving in
D can help
improve fuel economy.

Auto-stop exceptions
In certain situations or conditions, the engine may not auto-stop when the vehicle comes
to a standstill, such as if:
Condition/situation
The vehicle's speed has not reached a speed of approx. 5 mph (ca 8 km/h) afterthe most recent auto-start or after thedriver has started the engine.
The driver unbuckles his/her seat belt.
The main battery's charge is below the minimum level.
The engine has not reached its normal operating temperature.
The ambient temperature is below freezing or above approx. 85°F (30°C).
The windshield's heating function* is acti- vated.
The climate system cannot keep the desired settings in the passenger compart-ment; the blower will operate at highspeed.
The vehicle is backing up.
Condition/situation
The main battery's temperature is below freezing or too high.
The driver is turning the steering wheel hard.
The road's incline is very steep.
A trailer's electrical system is connected to the vehicle.
The hood has been opened A
.
The transmission has not reached its nor- mal operating temperature.
Atmospheric pressure is below a level equivalent to an altitude of approx. 4,900–8,200 ft (1500–2500 m) above sea level.The actual pressure is also affected by cur-rent weather conditions.
The Adaptive Cruise Control's* Queue Assist feature is activated.

Auto-start exceptions

WARNING
Do not open the hood if the engine has auto-stopped. The engine could suddenlyauto-start. Before opening the hood:
• Switch off the ignition using the START/STOP ENGINE

• Be aware that if the engine has beenrunning, components in the enginecompartment will be very hot.
If the engine does not auto-start, this could be due to
:
• The driver's seat belt is not fastened
• The gear selector is in
P and the driver's
door is opened
In these cases, the driver will have to restart the engine by pressing the START/STOP
ENGINE button.

Introduction
The Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system (DSTC) consists of a number of func-tions designed to help reduce wheel spin,counteract skidding, and to generally helpimprove directional stability.
CAUTION
A pulsating sound will be audible when the system is actively operating and is normal.
Traction control (TC)This function is designed to help reduce wheel spin by transferring power from a drivewheel that begins to lose traction to thewheel on the opposite side of the vehicle (onthe same axle). TC is most active at low speeds.This is one of DSTC's permanent functions and cannot be switched off.
Active Yaw Control (AYC)This function helps maintain directional stabil-ity, for example when cornering, by brakingone or more of the wheels if the vehicleshows a tendency to skid or slide laterally.This is one of DSTC's permanent functionsand cannot be switched off.
Spin control (SC)The spin control function is designed to helpprevent the drive wheels from spinning whilethe vehicle is accelerating.
Trailer Stability Assist – TSATrailer Stability Assist helps stabilize a vehiclethat is towing a trailer when the vehicle andtrailer have begun to sway. See page 288 formore information. This system is automatically deactivated if the driver selects
Sport mode.
Operation
Sport modeThe stability system is always activated and cannot be switched off. However, the driver can select Sport mode,
which offers more active driving characteris- tics. In this mode, the engine managementsystem monitors movement of the acceleratorpedal and steering wheel for sportier driving by allowing more lateral movement of the rearwheels before DSTC is activated. Under certain circumstances, such as when driving with snow chains, or driving in deepsnow or loose sand, it may be advisable totemporarily use
Sport mode for maximum
tractive force. If the driver releases pressure on the acceler- ator pedal, DSTC will also activate to helpstabilize the vehicle. To switch to Sport mode:
1. Press the My Car button in the center
console control panel and select
My S80
DSTC in the menu.
2. Unselect the symbol and leave the menu by pressing EXIT.
> This puts DSTC in Sport mode.
Sport mode remains active until the driver
switches it off in the menu or until the engine is switched off. DSTC will return to normalmode when the engine is restarted.
