WARNING
People with implanted pacemakers should not allow the pacemaker to come closer than9 inches (22 cm) to any of the Passive Entrysystem's antennas. This is to help preventinterference between the pacemaker and thePassive Entry system.

Locking and unlocking confirmation
The turn signals can be used to indicate that the vehicle has been locked/unlocked with theremote key. These settings can also be changedin the center display's Top view by going to:
SettingsMy CarLockingLocking and
Unlocking Feedback.
Exterior confirmation
• Locking: the turn signals flash once and the door mirrors will fold in (retract) 8
• Unlocking: the turn signals flash twice andthe door mirrors will fold out 8
When the vehicle is locked, confirmation will only be given if all doors/trunk and the hood areclosed. If the vehicle is locked while only the driver's door is closed 9
, all doors/trunk will lock but confirma-
tion will only be given when all doors/trunk/hood are closed.
Interior confirmation
Lock and alarm indicator light on the dashboard
A long flash indicates the vehicle is locked. While the vehicle is locked, the indicator will flashbriefly. LEDs in the lock buttons on the doors illuminate when the doors are locked.

2. Lift to open the trunk completely.
CAUTION
•
When pressing the rubberized pressure plate, only light pressure is necessary torelease the trunk's electronic lockingmechanism.
• When opening the trunk, pull it up usingthe handle. Too much pressure on the rub-berized pressure plate can damage itselectrical connections.
WARNING
Driving with the trunk open:
Driving with the
trunk open could lead to poisonous exhaust gases entering the passenger compartment. Ifthe trunk must be kept open for any reason,proceed as follows:
• Close the windows
• Set the ventilation system control to air flow to floor, windshield and side windowsand the blower control to its highest set-ting.
Unlocking the trunk from inside the vehicle
To unlock the trunk: 1.
Press the
button on the lighting panel
briefly.
> The trunk will unlock and can then be opened manually from outside the vehicle by pressing lightly on the rubberized pres-sure plate under the trunk lid.

Locking with the remote key
–Press the button on the remote key.

Opening the trunk from the inside (U.S. models only)
The vehicle is equipped with a florescent handle on the inside of the trunk lid, which can be usedin an emergency situation to open the trunk fromthe inside. Pull the handle down to release thetrunk lid. After use, the handle must be pushedback into its original position before the trunk canbe closed. This handle is not intended to be used to anchor the trunk lid when long loads are being transpor-ted.

While opening: the trunk lid will stop moving and an audible signal will sound.
• While closing: the trunk lid will stop andreturn to the currently programmed maximumopening position. An audible signal willsound.
WARNING
Pay attention to the risk of injury when open- ing/ closing the trunk. Before opening/clos-ing: Make sure that no one is in the path ofthe trunk lid as an injury could occur.

CAUTION
One of the remote keys must be in your pos- session or within range when you are behindthe vehicle in order to activate the foot move-ment sensor, even if the trunk is alreadyunlocked. This is done to help prevent thesensor from inadvertently opening the trunklid, for example, in a car wash. Be sure that the key is not within range when the vehicle is in an automatic carwash.

NOTE
If the child safety locks are activated for the rear doors and the mechanical locking mech-anism has also been activated with the keyblade, it will not be possible to open thesedoors from the inside or the outside. To unlock, use the central unlocking button on either of the front doors or the unlock but-ton on the remote key.

Automatically arming/disarming the alarm
Automatically arming the alarm helps prevent inadvertently leaving the vehicle without alarmprotection.
If the vehicle has been unlocked with the remote key (and the alarm has been disarmed) but nodoor or the trunk has been opened within2 minutes, the vehicle will automatically relockand the alarm will re-arm. In certain markets, the alarm will be re-armed automatically after a slight delay after the driver'sdoor has been opened and closed without beinglocked.

Alarm
The alarm system provides a warning if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle.
The following conditions will trigger the alarm:
• a door/hood/trunk are opened
• the battery is disconnected
• the alarm siren is disconnected
If a problem is detected in the alarm system, this symbol and

be displayed in the instrument panel.
Do not attempt to repair any of the components in the alarm system yourself; this could affect theinsurance policy on the vehicle. Contact a trainedand qualified Volvo service technician.
NOTE
One of the alarm sensors, which is sensitive to metallic objects, is located under the tunnelconsole cup holders. Avoid leaving coins,keys, etc., in the cup holders because theymay inadvertently trigger the alarm.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) helps reduce wheel spin, counteract skidding and to generallyhelp improve directional stability.
A pulsating sound will be audi- ble when the system is activelyoperating and is normal. Accel-eration may also be slightlyslower than normal.
WARNING
ESC is a supplementary aid and cannot deal with all situations or road conditions. The driver is always responsible for operating the vehicle in a safe manner in accordancewith current traffic regulations.
ESC consists of the following functions: • Traction control
• Spin control
• Active Yaw Control
• Engine Drag Control
• Trailer Stability Assist
Traction controlThis function is designed to help reduce wheel spin by transferring power from a drive wheel that begins to lose traction to the wheel on the oppo-site side of the vehicle (on the same axle).
Spin controlThis function is designed to help prevent thedrive wheels from spinning while the vehicle isaccelerating.
Active Yaw ControlAt low speeds, this function helps maintain direc-tional stability by braking one or more of thewheels if the vehicle shows a tendency to skid orslide laterally.
Engine Drag Control EDCEDC helps keep the engine running if the wheelsshow a tendency to lock, e.g., when shifting downin the manual shifting mode or while using theengine's braking function on a slippery surface. Ifthe wheels were to lock, the vehicle wouldbecome more difficult to steer.
Trailer Stability Assist
*1TSA helps stabilize a vehicle that is towing atrailer when the vehicle and trailer have begun tosway. This system is automatically deactivated if the driver selects
Sport mode.

ESC Temporarily offThe ESC system function has been temporarily reduced due to high brake disc temperature. The function reac- tivates automatically when the brakes have cooled.
ESC Service requiredThe ESC system is not functioning properly.
• Stop the vehicle in a safe place, turn off the engine and restart it.
• If the message is still displayed when the engine has restarted, drive to an authorized Volvo workshop to have the system inspected.
WARNING
The stability system is intended to help improve driving safety. It supplements, but cannever replace, the driver's judgment andresponsibility when operating the vehicle.Speed and driving style should always beadapted to traffic and road conditions.

Roll stability control (RSC)
Volvo's Roll Stability Control (RSC) is a stability system designed to help minimize the risk of arollover in emergency maneuvers or if a skidshould occur.
RSC registers the amount of change in the lat- eral angle at which the vehicle is leaning. Usingthis information, RSC calculates the likelihood ofa rollover. If there is an imminent risk of a rollover,the stability system is activated, power to theengine is cut and the brakes are applied to oneor more of the wheels until the vehicle regainsstability.

Changing a Speed Limiter (SL) *

–Change a set maximum speed by pressing the
(1) or — (3) buttons briefly or by
pressing and holding them: • Press briefly
: changes the maximum
speed in +/– 5 mph (+/– 5 km/h) incre- ments. Each press changes the maximumspeed by +/– 5 mph (+/– 5 km/h).
• Press and hold
: changes the maximum
speed +/– 1 mph (+/– 1 km/h) at a time.Release the button when the indicator (4)has moved to the desired maximumspeed.
LimitationsWhen driving down steep hills, the SpeedLimiter's braking effect may not be adequate andthe set maximum speed may be exceeded. The message
Speed limit exceeded will appear in
the instrument panel to alert the driver.
NOTE
This message will appear if the maximum speed is exceeded by more than approx.2 mph (3 km/h).

Automatic Speed Limiter (ASL) *
Automatic Speed Limiter (ASL) helps the driver adapt the vehicle's maximum speed to the pos-ted speed limits.
The Speed Limiter (SL) function can be switched to Automatic Speed Limiter.
Where applicable, ASL uses speed information from the Road Sign Information * system to auto-
matically adapt the vehicle's maximum speed.
WARNING
• ASL is a supplemental aid to the driver and does not function in all driving situa-tions or in all traffic, weather or road con-ditions. It can never replace the driver

Activating/deactivating the Automatic Speed Limiter (ASL) *
The function Automatic Speed Limiter (ASL) is a
supplement to the Speed Limiter (SL) and can be activated/deactivated.
ASL is activated/deactivated in the center display's Functionview.
Activating ASL
With SL activated: 1.
Tap the
Speed Sign Assist button in the
center display's Function view.
> ASL will go into standby mode and a green indicator light in the button will illu- minate. A road sign symbol will be dis-played in center of the speedometer.
2. Press the
button on the left-side steer-
ing wheel keypad.
> ASL will be activated with the vehicle's current speed.
Deactivating ASL
–Tap the Speed Sign Assist button in the
center display's Function view.
> ASL will be deactivated, the indicator will be GRAY and the Speed limiter (SL) will be activated.
WARNING
After switching from ASL to SL, the vehicle will no longer adapt speed to posted speedlimits. It will only limit the vehicle's maximumspeed.

Changing tolerance for the Automatic Speed Limiter
Automatic Speed Limiter can be set to different tolerance levels.
Posted speed limit toleranceASL can be set to allow the vehicle to drive above or below the posted speed limit. For exam-ple, if the current posted speed limit is 43 mph(70 km/h), the driver can opt to allow the vehicleto drive at a speed of 47 mph (75 km/h).
