Inproduction, Volvo has partly or completelyphased out several chemicals including CFCs,lead chromates, asbestos, and cadmium; andreduced the number of chemicals used in ourplants 50% since 1991. Volvo was the first in the world to introduce into production a three-way catalytic converterwith a Lambda sond, now called the heatedoxygen sensor, in 1976. The current version ofthis highly efficient system reduces emissionsof harmful substances (CO, HC, NOx) from theexhaust pipe by approximately 95 - 99% andthe search to eliminate the remaining emis-sions continues. Volvo is the only automobilemanufacturer to offer CFC-free retrofit kits forthe air conditioning system of all models as farback as the 1975 model 240. Advanced elec-tronic engine controls and cleaner fuels arebringing us closer to our goal. In addition to continuous environmental refinement of con-ventional gasoline-powered internal combus-tion engines, Volvo is actively looking atadvanced technology alternative-fuel vehicles. When you drive a Volvo, you become our part- ner in the work to lessen the vehicle's impacton the environment. To reduce your vehicle'senvironmental impact, you can:
Maintain proper air pressure in your tires.Tests have shown decreased fuel econ-omy with improperly inflated tires.
Follow the recommended maintenanceschedule in your Warranty and ServiceRecords Information booklet.
Drive at a constant speed whenever possi-ble.
See a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician as soon as possible for inspec-tion if the check engine (malfunction indi-cator) light illuminates, or stays on afterthe vehicle has started.
Properly dispose of any vehicle-relatedwaste such as used motor oil, used batter-ies, brake pads, etc.

Never turn off the engine while the vehicle is moving, e.g. when driving downhill. Thisdeactivates certain important systemssuch as power steering and brakes.
Other factors that decrease fuel consumption
Dirty air cleaner.
Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter.
Incorrect front-end alignment.
Incorrect wheel alignment.
Some of the above items and others are checked as part of Volvo's standard mainte-nance schedule.

Preparing for a long trip
It is important to have the vehicle's systems and equipment checked carefully before driv-ing long distances.
Check that
the engine is running properly and that fuel consumption is normal
there are no leaks (fuel, oil or other fluid)
the brake pedal is functioning properly
all lights are working
‒ adjust the head-
light height if the vehicle is carrying aheavy load
tire tread depth and air pressure are atcorrect levels. Change to snow tires whendriving in areas where there is a risk ofsnowy or icy roads
the start battery is sufficiently charged
the wiper blades are in good condition

Winter driving
It is important to check the vehicle before driving in cold/snowy conditions to makesure it can be driven safely.
Before the cold season arrives: Make sure the engine coolant contains 50% antifreeze. This mixture helps pro-tect the engine from frost erosion down toapprox. –35 °C (–31 °F). Do not mix dif-ferent types of antifreeze as this couldpose a health risk.
Keep the fuel tank well filled to preventcondensation from forming.
Check the viscosity of the engine oil. Oilwith low viscosity (thinner oil) improvescold-weather starting and reduces fuelconsumption when driving with a coldengine.
CAUTION
Low-viscosity oil should not be used with hard driving or in hot weather.
Check the condition and charge level of the start battery. Cold weather placesgreater demands on the start battery andreduces its capacity.
Use washer fluid containing antifreeze tohelp prevent ice from forming in thewasher fluid reservoir.

Engine oil For the recommended service intervals and warranties to be applied, an approved engineoil must be used.
Volvo recommends:
If the engine oil is not checked regularly and the level becomes low, this could cause seri-ous engine damage.
CAUTION
To satisfy the requirements for the engine's service intervals, all engines are factory-filled with a specially adapted syntheticengine oil. Great care has been put into thechoice of oil, with consideration given toservice life, startability, fuel consumptionand environmental impact. For the recommended service intervals to apply, an approved engine oil must beused. Only use the prescribed oil grade totop off or change the oil. Otherwise, thereis a risk of the vehicle's service life, starta-bility, fuel consumption and environmentalimpact being affected. Failure to use engine oil of the prescribed grade and viscosity could cause damage toengine-related components. Volvo Car Cor-poration disclaims warranty liability forsuch type of damage. Volvo recommends entrusting oil changes to an authorized Volvo workshop.
Volvo uses different systems to warn if the oil level is too low/high or the oil pressure is low.On engine variants with an oil pressure sensor,

If the vehicle is driven in adverse con-ditions, Volvo recommends using an oil with ahigher grade than that specified.

The engine oil level is monitored by an elec- tronic oil level sensor.

It may be necessary to top up engine oil between regularly scheduled services. No action is necessary with regard to engine oil level until a message appears in the instru-ment panel.

Cleaning the exterior
The vehicle should be washed as soon as it becomes dirty. This makes the vehicle easierto clean because dirt does not attach asstrongly. It also reduces the risk of scratchesand keeps the vehicle looking new. Wash thevehicle in a car wash or garage with an oilseparator and use car washing detergent.

Polishing and waxing
Polish and wax the vehicle when the paint is matte or to provide extra protection. Thevehicle does not need to be polished until it isat least a year old. However, it can be waxedduring the first year. Do not polish or wax thevehicle in direct sunlight. The surface of thevehicle should not be warmer than 45 °C(113 °F).
Wash and dry the vehicle very carefully before polishing or waxing. Removeasphalt and tar stains with asphaltremover or paint thinner. More stubbornstains can be removed with a grindingpaste designed for vehicle paint.
Use polish first and then liquid or pastewax. Follow the instructions on the pack-age carefully. Many products contain bothpolish and wax.
A wide range of polymer-based waxes canbe purchased today. These waxes are easyto use and produce a long-lasting, high-gloss finish that protects the bodyworkagainst oxidation, road dirt and fading.

Cleaning exterior plastic, rubber and trim components The vehicle should be washed as soon as it becomes dirty. The longer the dirt remains,the more difficult it will be to keep the vehicleclean. It could also lead to paint damage.Wash the vehicle in a car wash or garagewith an oil separator and use car washingdetergent.
A special cleaning agent available from Volvo retailers is recommended for the cleaning andcare of colored plastic parts, rubber and trimcomponents, e.g. glossy trim. Follow theusage instructions for the cleaning agent care-fully. Avoid using car washing detergents with a pH value lower than 3.5 or higher than 11.5. Doingso could result in the discoloring of anodized aluminum surfaces
* (as shown in the illustra-
tions below). Abrasive polishing agents are not recommended for these areas (as shown in the illustrations below).
Components that should be washed with a cleaning product with a pH value between 3.5 and 11.5.
CAUTION
Avoid waxing and polishing plastic and rubber. If using degreaser on plastic and rubber, only rub (if necessary) with slight pressure.Use a soft sponge. Polishing glossy trim moldings can wear away or damage the glossy surface layer. Polish containing abrasives must not be used.

Corrosion protection for the body consists of modern metallic protective coatings on thesheet metal, a high-quality painting process,corrosion-protected and minimized metaloverlap, and shielding plastic components,abrasion protection and supplemental rustinhibitor in exposed areas. In the chassis,exposed components of the wheel suspensionare made of corrosion-resistant cast alumi-num.
Inspection and maintenanceThe corrosion protection does not normallyrequire maintenance, but keeping the vehicleclean helps reduce the risk of corrosion. Theuse of strong alkaline or acidic cleaning fluidsshould be avoided on shiny body components.Any stone chips in the paint should betouched up as soon as they are discovered.
