Engine compartment overview
This overview shows some service-related components.
Some of the components included in the vehi- cle's electric drive system are located in theengine compartment. Exercise caution whenaccessing the engine compartment and onlytouch what is required for normal mainte-nance.
WARNING
Orange wiring may only be handled by qualified personnel.
WARNING
A number of electrical components in Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid vehicles use high-voltage current and can be extremely dan-gerous if handled incorrectly.
Do not touch anything that is not clearly described in this Owner's Man-ual.
Be careful when checking/filling fluidsin the engine compartment.
The layout of the engine compartment may vary depending on model and engine variant.
Coolant expansion tank
Brake fluid reservoir (located on the driv- er's side)
Washer fluid filler pipe 12
Fusebox
Air filter
Engine oil filler pipe
WARNING
Bear in mind that the cooling fan (located at the front of the engine compartmentbehind the radiator) may start or continuerunning automatically up to about6 minutes after the engine is turned off. Always entrust engine washing to a work- shop – an authorized Volvo workshop isrecommended. If the engine is hot, there isa risk of fire.
WARNING
The ignition system works with extremely high and dangerous voltages. The vehicleelectrical system should always be in igni-tion mode
0 when work in being per-
formed in the engine compartment. Do not touch any spark plugs or ignition coils when the vehicle electrical system isin ignition mode II or when the engine is
warm.

Start battery
The vehicle has a single-pole electrical sys- tem that uses the chassis and engine mountas conductors. The start battery is used to start the electrical system and power electrical equipment in thevehicle. The hybrid battery is used to start thecombustion engine. The start battery should only be replaced by a workshop 17
.
The start battery is a 12 V AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery, dimensioned for regenera-tive charging and to support the function ofthe vehicle's various systems. The service life and performance of the start battery are affected by factors such as drivingstyle, driving conditions, climate, battery dis-charges, number of starts, etc. Never disconnect the start battery while the engine is running.
Make sure the cables to the start batteryare correctly connected and the clampsare securely tightened.
WARNING
Batteries generate hydrogen gas, which is flammable and explosive.
Do not connect the jumper cable toany part of the fuel system or to anymoving parts. Avoid touching hotmanifolds.
Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Donot allow battery fluid to contact eyes, skin, fabrics or painted surfaces.
If contact occurs, flush the affectedarea immediately with water. Obtainmedical help immediately if eyes areaffected.
Never expose the battery to open flameor electric spark. Do not smoke nearthe battery. Failure to follow theinstructions for jump starting can leadto injury.

WARNING
California Proposition 65 Operating, servicing and maintaining a pas- senger vehicle can expose you to chemi-cals including engine exhaust, carbon mon-oxide, phthalates, and lead, which areknown to the State of California to causecancer and birth defects or other reproduc-tive harm. To minimize exposure, avoidbreathing exhaust, do not idle the engineexcept as necessary, service your vehicle ina well ventilated area and wear gloves orwash your hands frequently when servicingyour vehicle. For more information go towww.P65Warnings.ca.gov/passenger-vehicle.
Use the vehicle's connection points in the engine compartment to connect an externalstart battery or battery charger. The battery terminals on the car's start battery in the luggage/cargo area must not be used.
17
An authorized Volvo workshop is recommended.

CAUTION
It is not possible to charge another vehi- cle's battery by supplying current throughthe charging points. Using the chargingpoints to charge another vehicle's batterycould cause a fuse to blow, which wouldcause the charging points to stop working.
CAUTION
Only a modern battery charger with con- trolled charge voltage should be used tocharge the starter battery. The rapid charg-ing function should not be used as thiscould damage the battery.
NOTE
If both the starter battery and the hybrid battery are discharged, both batteries
must be charged. In such cases, it is notpossible to charge only the hybrid batteryfirst. The starter battery must have a certain level of charge for it to be possible tocharge the hybrid battery.
CAUTION
Failure to observe the following could cause the infotainment energy save modeto temporarily stop working and/or a mes-sage in the driver's display regarding thestate of charge of the starter battery maybe temporarily incorrect after an externalstarter battery or battery charger has beenconnected:
The negative battery terminal of thevehicle's starter battery must
never be
used to connect an external starterbattery or battery charger – only thevehicle's negative charging pointshould be used as a grounding point.

Hybrid battery The vehicle's electric motor is powered by a rechargeable, maintenance-free, lithium-ionhybrid battery.
NOTE
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybrid battery is discharged.
NOTE
If both the starter battery and the hybrid battery are discharged, both batteries
must be charged. In such cases, it is notpossible to charge only the hybrid batteryfirst. The starter battery must have a certain level of charge for it to be possible tocharge the hybrid battery.
WARNING
Hybrid battery replacement may only be performed by a workshop – an authorizedVolvo workshop is recommended.
CoolantThe hybrid battery's cooling system has its own expansion tank.
CAUTION
Filling the hybrid battery coolant should only be performed by a workshop – anauthorized Volvo workshop is recom-mended.
Specifications for hybrid batteryType: Lithium-ion
Power reserve: 11.6 kWh.
NOTE
The capacity of the hybrid battery decrea- ses with age and use, which could result inincreased use of the combustion engine, leading to higher fuel consumption andreduced electric motor range.

Fuses and fuseboxes All electrical functions and components are protected by a number of fuses in order toprotect the vehicle's electrical system fromdamage by short circuiting or overloading.
WARNING
Never use a foreign object or a fuse with a higher amperage than that specified toreplace a fuse. This could cause significantdamage to the electrical system and possi-bly lead to a fire.
WARNING

WARNING
A number of electrical components in Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid vehicles use high-voltage current and can be extremely dan-gerous if handled incorrectly. Do not touch anything that is not clearly described in the vehicle's Owner's Manual.
If any electrical component or function is not responding, the component may have blown a fuse due to temporary overload. If the same fuse blows repeatedly, there may be a prob-lem with the component. Volvo recommendscontacting an authorized Volvo workshop tohave the component checked.

Replacing fuses
All electrical functions and components are protected by a number of fuses in order toprotect the vehicle's electrical system fromdamage by short circuiting or overloading.
1. Refer to the fuse diagram to locate the fuse.
2. Pull out the fuse and examine it from the side to determine if the curved metal wire in the fuse is intact.
3. If the wire is broken, replace the fuse with a new fuse of the same color and amper-age.
WARNING
Never use a foreign object or a fuse with a higher amperage than that specified toreplace a fuse. This could cause significantdamage to the electrical system and possi-bly lead to a fire.
WARNING
Contact an authorized Volvo workshop for assistance replacing fuses not listed in theOwner's Manual. If fuse replacement isperformed incorrectly, significant damagecan be caused to the electrical system.
