Towing using a towline
This section refers to one vehicle being towed behind another using a towline.
Before towing another vehicle, check applica- ble speed limit regulations.
Preparations and towing
CAUTION
For some transmission variants, it is not possible to shift from P position if theengine is switched off. Contact an author-ized Volvo workshop for assistance towingor call a professional towing service.
CAUTION
Note that the vehicle must always be towed with the wheels rolling forward.
Do not tow a vehicle with automatictransmission at a speed greater than80 km/h (50 mph) or for a distancegreater than 80 km (50 miles).
WARNING
Ignition mode
II must be active – all
airbags are deactivated in ignition mode I.
Always have the remote key in thevehicle when it is towed.
WARNING
The brake and steering servos do not work when the engine is off – it takesabout 5 times more pressure on the brakepedal and steering requires much moreeffort than normal.
1. Turn on the hazard warning flashers.
2. Attach the towline to the towing eyelet.
3. Put the vehicle in ignition mode II – with-
out pressing the brake pedal, turn the start knob clockwise and hold it there for about4 seconds. Release the knob, which willautomatically return to its original position.
4. Move the gear selector to neutral (N) and release the parking brake. If the battery charge level is too low, it may not be possible to release the parkingbrake. Connect an auxiliary battery to thevehicle if the battery is discharged.
> The towing vehicle can now start driv-ing. 5. Keep the towline taut when the towing
vehicle slows down by applying light pres- sure to the brake pedal. This will helpavoid jarring movements.
6. Be prepared to apply the brakes to stop the vehicle.
Jump startingDo not tow the vehicle to start the engine. Usean auxiliary battery if the start battery's chargelevel is so low that the engine cannot bestarted.
CAUTION
Attempting to tow with the engine running could result in damage to the three-waycatalytic converter.

CAUTION
The vehicle must not be driven with tires of different dimensions or with a spare wheelother than the one that came with the vehi-cle. The use of different size wheels canseriously damage your vehicle's transmis-sion.

Handling the spare wheel 15
Follow these instructions regarding handling the spare wheel.
Accessing the spare wheel
This illustration is generic and appearance may vary.
The spare tire is located in the spare wheel well under the cargo compartment with theoutside of the wheel facing downward. Thespare tire is secured with a bolt that goesthrough the tire and attaches it to the body.The foam block contains all tools needed tochange a wheel.
1. Lift the rear edge of the cargo compart- ment floor.
2. Unscrew the retaining bolt.
3. Lift out the spare wheel.
Stowing a flat tire1. Screw the spare tire's retaining bolt back on.
CAUTION
Do not attempt to unscrew the lower part of the retaining bolt if it is attached to thebody, as this could cause it to break. If the retaining bolt becomes dislodged from its lower attachment point in thebody under the spare tire, replace it in thehole and turn clockwise to secure it again.
WARNING
On vehicles with 48 V batteries, the bolt is attached to the battery box instead of thebody. If the lower part of the retaining boltis not dislodged when the spare tire istaken out, it should be removed to helpprevent injury when the flat tire is replaced.
2. Put the tools back in their correct posi- tions in the foam block.
3. Then lower the trunk/cargo compartment floor and place the punctured tire in the trunk/cargo compartment.

Using the electrical outlets
The 12 V outlet can be used for devices intended for this such as MP3 players, cool-ers and cellular phones.
The ignition must be in at least mode I for the
outlets to supply current. The outlets will then be active as long as there is sufficient chargein the start battery. If the engine is turned off and the vehicle is locked, the outlets will be deactivated. If theengine is turned off and the vehicle remainsunlocked, the sockets will remain active for upto 7 minutes.
NOTE
Bear in mind that using the electrical out- lets when the engine is off could cause thestarter battery to have too low of a chargelevel, which could limit other functionality. Accessories connected to the electrical outlets can be activated even when thevehicle electrical system is off or if precon-ditioning is used. For this reason, discon-nect plugs when they are not in use to pre-vent the starter battery from becoming dis-charged.
WARNING
Do not use accessories with large or heavy plugs – they could damage theoutlet or come loose while you are driv-ing.
Do not use accessories that couldcause disruptions to e.g. the vehicle'sradio receiver or electrical system.
Position the accessory so that there isno risk of it injuring the driver or pas-sengers in the event of heavy brakingor a collision.
Pay attention to connected accessoriesas they can generate heat that couldburn passengers or the interior.
Using 12 V outlets1. Remove the stopper (tunnel console) or
fold down the cover (trunk/cargo com-partment) over the socket and plug in thedevice.
2. Unplug the device and put the stopper back in (tunnel console) or fold up thecover (trunk/cargo compartment) whenthe socket is not in use or left unattended.
CAUTION
The maximum power is 120 W (10 A) per outlet.

NOTE

On-board Diagnostic SystemOBD II is part of your vehicle's computerized engine management system. It stores diag-nostic information about your vehicle's emis-sion controls. It can light the Check Enginelight (MIL) if it detects an emission control"fault." A "fault" is a component or systemthat is not performing within an expectedrange. A fault may be permanent or temporary.OBD II will store a message about any fault.

OBD II for emission
inspections?
Many states connect a computer directly to a vehicle's OBD II system. The inspector canthen read "faults." In some states, this type ofinspection has replaced the tailpipe emissiontest.
How can my vehicle fail OBD II emission
inspection?
Your vehicle can fail OBD II emission inspec- tion for any of the following reasons: If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit, your vehicle may fail inspection.
If your vehicle's Check Engine light was lit,but went out without any action on yourpart, OBD II will still have a recorded fault.Your vehicle may pass or fail, dependingon the inspection practices in your area.
If you had recent service that required dis-connecting the battery, OBD II diagnosticinformation may be incomplete and "notready" for inspection. A vehicle that is notready may fail inspection.
How can I prepare for my next
OBD II
emission inspection?
If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit or was lit but went out without service, have your vehicle diagnosed and, if necessary,serviced by a qualified Volvo technician.
If you recently had service for a lit CheckEngine light, or if you had service thatrequired disconnecting the battery, aperiod of driving is necessary to bring theOBD II system to "ready" for inspection.Two half-hour trips of mixed stop-and-go/highway driving are typically needed toallow OBD II to reach readiness. YourVolvo retailer can provide you with moreinformation on planning a trip.
Maintain your vehicle in accordance withyour vehicle's maintenance schedule.
Owner maintenancePeriodic maintenance requirements and inter-vals are described in your vehicle's Warrantyand Service Records Information booklet. The following points can be carried out between the normally scheduled maintenanceservices.
Each time the vehicle is refueled:
Check the engine oil level.
Clean the windshield, windshield wipers, headlights, and taillights.

Monthly:
Check cold tire pressure in all tires. Inspect the tires for wear.
Check that engine coolant and other fluidlevels are between the indicated "min"and "max" markings.
Clean interior glass surfaces with a glasscleaner and soft paper towels.
Wipe driver information displays with asoft cloth.
Visually inspect battery terminals for cor-rosion. Corrosion may indicate a loose ter-minal connector, or a battery near the endof its useful service life. Consult your Volvoretailer for additional information.
As needed:
Wash the vehicle, including the undercarriage, to reduce wear that can be caused by abuildup of dirt, and corrosion that can becaused by salt residues. Clean leaves and twigs from air intake vents at the base of the windshield, and from other pla-ces where they may collect.

Data transfer between vehicle and workshop over Wi-Fi
Volvo workshops have a designated Wi-Fi network for data transfer between your vehi-cle and the workshop. Your visit to the work-shop will be easier and more effective whendiagnostics information and software can betransferred over the workshop's network.
At the workshop, your service technician can connect your vehicle to the workshop's Wi-Finetwork to perform troubleshooting anddownload software. For this type of communi-cation, the vehicle only connects to a work-shop's network. It is not possible to connectthe vehicle to another Wi-Fi network (e.g. yourhome network) in the same way as to a work-shop's network.
Connecting with remote keyConnection is usually managed by the servicetechnician, who will use the remote key but-tons. It is therefore important to bring a keywith buttons with you when you visit theworkshop. Pressing the lock button on theremote key three times will connect the vehi-cle to the workshop's Wi-Fi network. When the car is connected to a Wi-Fi net- work, the
symbol appears in the center
display.

It may be necessary to top up engine oil between regularly scheduled services. Noaction is necessary with regard to engine oillevel until a message appears in the instru-ment panel.

Coolant
The coolant helps ensure that excess heat is distributed in the circuit in order to, for exam-ple, warm up the start battery or provideheating to the passenger compartment.
To avoid deterioration of the cooling system, engine trouble, etc., only approved Volvo cool-ant should be used. Recommended grade: Volvo-approved pre-
mixed coolant. If concentrated coolant is used, mix with 50% water of acceptable quality (i.e.not salt water, etc.). Consult a Volvo retailer ifyou have any questions. To avoid deterioration of the cooling system, engine trouble, etc., only approved Volvo cool-ant should be used.
WARNING
Coolant is hazardous if ingested and could cause damage to organs (kidneys). Theproduct contains ethylene glycol, inhibitor,water, etc.

Starter battery The starter battery is used to start the electri- cal system and power the starter motor andother electrical equipment in the vehicle.
The vehicle has a single-pole electrical system that uses the chassis and engine mount asconductors. The vehicle has a voltage-regulated alternating current generator. The starter battery is a 12 V battery, dimen- sioned for the carbon dioxide-reducing func-tions Start/Stop and regenerative chargingand to support the function of the vehicle'svarious systems. The service life and performance of the starter battery are affected by factors such as drivingstyle, driving conditions, climate, battery dis-charges, number of starts, etc. Never disconnect the starter battery while the engine is running.
Make sure the cables to the starter batteryare correctly connected and the clampsare securely tightened.
WARNING
Batteries generate hydrogen gas, which is flammable and explosive.
Do not connect the jumper cable toany part of the fuel system or to anymoving parts. Avoid touching hotmanifolds.
Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Donot allow battery fluid to contact eyes,skin, fabrics or painted surfaces.
If contact occurs, flush the affectedarea immediately with water. Obtainmedical help immediately if eyes areaffected.
Never expose the battery to open flameor electric spark. Do not smoke nearthe battery. Failure to follow theinstructions for jump starting can leadto injury.
Starter battery service life and capacity
The service life of the starter battery is affec- ted by several factors, such as number ofstarts, battery discharges, driving style, drivingconditions, climate, etc. The starting capacityof the battery reduces gradually over time. Thebattery must therefore be recharged if thevehicle is not used for a long period of time orif it is only driven short distances. Severe cold further limits starting capacity. If the starterbattery becomes discharged too many times,its service life will be shortened. To help keep the starter battery in good condi- tion, the vehicle should be driven at least15 minutes per week or the battery should beconnected to a battery charger with automatictrickle charging. A starter battery that isalways kept fully charged has the maximumservice life.

WARNING
If the starter battery is disconnected, the function for automatic opening and closingmust be reset to function correctly. A resetis required in order for the pinch protectionto work.
CAUTION
On certain models, the battery is secured with a tensioning strap. Make sure that thetensioning strap is always securely tight-ened.

Support battery Vehicles with the Start/Stop function are equipped with two batteries – a more power-ful 12 V start battery and a support batterythat provides stronger current during thefunction's start sequence.
The 12 V support battery is located in the engine compartment.
If the vehicle is instead equipped with a 48 V support battery, it is located under the cargo compartment.The box over the 48 V support battery may only beremoved by an authorized workshop.
WARNING
High voltage may be dangerous if handled incorrectly. Do not touch anything on bat-teries that is not clearly described in thisOwner's Manual. Never use a 48 V support battery to jump start the vehicle.
External electrical equipment may notunder any circumstance be connectedto the 48 V battery.
Only a workshop may replace or per-form service on the 48 V battery – anauthorized Volvo workshop is recom-mended.
NOTE
The higher the current consumption in the vehicle, the more the alternator hasto work and the batteries have to becharged = increased fuel consumption.
When the starter battery capacity hasdropped below the lowest permissiblelevel, the Start/Stop function is disen-gaged.
When the Start/Stop function is temporarily reduced due to high current consumption: The engine will auto-start, even if the driver does not lift their foot from thebrake pedal.
The support battery does not normally requiremore service than the start battery. If you haveany questions or concerns, consult a work-shop ‒
an authorized Volvo workshop is rec-
ommended.

CAUTION
If the following is not observed, the Start/ Stop function may temporarily stop work-ing after connection of an external starterbattery or battery charger: The negative battery terminal of thevehicle's starter battery must
never be
used to connect an external starterbattery or battery charger – only thevehicle's negative charging pointshould be used as a grounding point.
NOTE
If the starter battery has been discharged to the extent that the vehicle does not havenormal electrical functions and the enginemust then be jump-started with an externalbattery or a battery charger, the Start/Stopfunction may remain activated. If the Start/Stop function shortly thereafter auto-stopsthe engine, there is a huge risk that auto-start of the engine will fail due to insuffi-cient battery capacity since the battery hadnot had time to recharge. If the vehicle has been jump-started or if there has not been enough time for thebattery to be charged with a batterycharger, the Start/Stop function should betemporarily deactivated until the batteryhas been recharged by the vehicle. At anambient temperature of about +15°C(about 60°F), the battery must be chargedby the vehicle for at least one hour. Atlower ambient temperatures, the chargingtime can increase to 3-4 hours. It is advisa-ble to charge the battery with an externalbattery charger.
