General information about Twin Engine Twin Engine vehicles are driven just like any other vehicle, but certain functions differ froma vehicle powered exclusively by gasoline.The electric motor powers the vehicle primar-ily at low speeds; the gasoline engine is usedat higher speeds or during more active driv-ing.
The instrument panel displays Twin Engine- specific information - charging information,selected drive mode, distance to dischargedbattery and hybrid battery charge level. Different drive modes can be selected while driving, e.g. electric power only or, if morepower is needed, a combination of electric andgasoline power. The vehicle calculates a com-bination of driveability, driving experience,environmental impact and fuel economy forthe selected drive mode. In order to function optimally, the hybrid bat- tery (and its electrical drive systems) and thegasoline engine (and its drive systems) mustbe at the correct operating temperature. Bat-tery capacity can be considerably reduced ifthe battery is too cold or too hot. Precondi-tioning prepares the vehicle's drive systemsand passenger compartment before driving tohelp reduce both wear and energy consump-tion. It also helps increase the hybrid battery'srange.The hybrid battery which powers the electricmotor is recharged using the charging cable. Itcan also be recharged during light braking andthrough engine braking in gear position
B. The
combustion engine can also help recharge thehybrid battery.
Important
No electrical current
Keep in mind that if there is no electrical cur- rent to the vehicle, i.e. the ignition is switchedoff or the start battery is discharged, certainfunctions such as brakes, power steering, etc.will not work.
WARNING
If the vehicle does not have electrical cur- rent and both the electric motor and thegasoline engine are switched off, thebrakes cannot be used to stop the vehicle.
Towing not permitted
Never tow a Twin Engine vehicle behind another vehicle, as this could damage theelectric motor.
Exterior engine noise
Because there is no sound from the engine when only the electric motor is running, thevehicle is equipped with artificial exteriorbackground noise. This sound is intended tohelp warn children, pedestrians, cyclists, ani- mals, etc. outside the vehicle of the vehicle'sapproach.
High-voltage electrical current
WARNING
A number of electrical components in Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid vehicles use high-voltage current and can be extremely dan-gerous if handled incorrectly. These com-ponents and any orange wiring in the vehi-cle may only be handled by trained andqualified Volvo service technicians.
Do not touch anything that is not clearly described in this Owner's Manual.

The red and blue lights in the charging mod- ule indicate the status of ongoing and com-pleted charging.
Charge module: 1. Red warning light, 2. Blue status indicator
When the charge module is initially plugged into a wall outlet, the red warning light willflash once to indicate that a startup safetycheck has been performed. When the safetycheck has been completed, the blue statusindicator will glow steadily and the red warn-ing light will be off. The charger is now readyto be used. If the red warning light continuesto flash or glows steadily, a fault has beendetected and the charger will not deliverpower to the vehicle. Contact a Volvo retaileror a certified Volvo service technician. When the charging cable is connected to thevehicle's charging socket, the blue light willflash once. Charging cable connected to the vehicle's charging socket:

Flashing blue Charging is in progress. Thelight flashes about onceevery other second.
Solid blue Charging completed. This will also be indicated in theinstrument panel.

will go out and the selected theme will be dis- played to indicate that the electric motor isactivated. In some situations, such as in cold weather or if the hybrid battery's charge level is too low,the gasoline engine will start instead.
Error messagesIf the Vehicle key not found message is
shown in the instrument panel at start, place the remote key at the backup reader and thenmake a new start attempt.

NOTE
When the remote key is placed in the backup reader, make sure that no othervehicle keys, metal objects or electronicdevices (e.g. cellular phones, tablets, lap-tops or chargers) are in the backup reader.Multiple vehicle keys close to each other inthe backup reader can disrupt their func-tionality.
If Vehicle start System check, wait is dis-
played in the instrument panel while attempt- ing to start the vehicle, wait until the messagedisappears and try again to start the vehicle.
CAUTION
If the engine has not responded after 3 attempts – wait for 3 minutes before star-ting a new attempt. Starting capabilityincreases if the starter battery is given timeto recover.
NOTE
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybrid battery is discharged.
WARNING
Never remove the remote control key from
the vehicle while driving.
WARNING
Always remove the remote key from the passenger compartment when youleave the vehicle and make sure theignition is in mode
0.
Always put the gear selector in
P and
apply the parking brake before leavingthe vehicle. Never leave the vehicleunsupervised while the engine is run-ning.
Always open the garage door fully andmake sure that ventilation is very goodbefore starting the engine in a garage.The exhaust fumes produced by thevehicle contain carbon monoxide,which is invisible and odorless but verytoxic.

Mode Functions
I The panoramic roof, power windows, 12-volt electricalsocket in the passenger com-partment, Bluetooth, naviga-tion, phone, blower and wind-shield wipers can be used.
The power seats can beadjusted.

Selecting ignition mode
The vehicle's ignition can be put in various modes (levels) to make different functionsavailable.
Selecting an ignition mode
Start knob in the tunnel console.
Ignition mode 0
– Unlock the vehicle and
keep the remote key in the passenger compartment.
NOTE
To set level I or II without engine start –
do not depress the brake pedal (or clutch
pedal for vehicles with manual transmis- sion) when selecting this ignition mode.

automatically return to the original posi- tion.
Ignition mode II
– Turn the start knob
clockwise and hold it there forapprox. 5 seconds. Release the knob,which will automatically return to its origi-nal position.

– To return to
ignition mode 0 from modes I and II, turn
the start knob clockwise and release it.The control will automatically return to theoriginal position.

Brake functions
The vehicle's brakes are used to reduce speed or prevent the vehicle from rolling.
In addition to the wheel brakes and parking brakes, the vehicle is also equipped with anumber of automatic brake assist functions.These systems provide assistance by e.g. thedriver not needing to depress the brake pedalat a traffic light or when starting up a hill. Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, the following brake assist functions may beincluded:

Brakes
The brake pedal is used to apply the vehicle's regular brakes, which are part of the brakesystem.
The vehicle is equipped with two brake cir- cuits. If one brake circuit is damaged, thebrake pedal will go down further whendepressed. More pressure will then berequired from the driver for normal brakingeffect.
WARNING
The power brakes only work when the electric motor or combustion engine is run-ning.
If the brake pedal is used when the engine is switched off, greater pressure must be appliedto brake the vehicle. In very hilly areas or when driving with a heavy load, gear position B can be used to augment
the brakes with engine braking.
Anti-lock brakesThe vehicle is equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS 2
), which helps prevent
the wheels from locking and helps maintain steering control when braking. Vibrations maybe felt from the brake pedal when ABS isoperating, which is normal.

Parking on a hillAlways use the parking brake when parking on a hill.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when park- ing on an incline. Selecting a gear or put-ting the automatic transmission in P may
not be sufficient to keep the vehicle sta-tionary in all situations.
If the vehicle is pointing uphill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointing away from
the curb.
If the vehicle is pointing downhill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointingtoward
the curb.
Heavy load uphill
Heavy loads, such as a trailer, could cause the vehicle to roll backward when the parkingbrake is released automatically on steep uphillgradients. To help avoid this, pull the controlupward while you are driving away. Releasethe control when the vehicle gains traction.

Parking brake malfunction
If you are unable to deactivate or activate the parking brake after several attempts, contactan authorized Volvo workshop.
A audible warning signal will sound if the park- ing brake is activated while the vehicle isbeing driven. If the vehicle must be parked before the prob- lem is rectified, turn the wheels as when park-ing on an incline and put the gear selector inP .
Low battery charge levelIf the battery charge level is too low, it will notbe possible to activate or deactivate the park-ing brake. Connect an auxiliary battery to thevehicle if the battery is discharged.
Replacing brake padsDue to the design of the electric parkingbrake, the rear brake pads must be replacedby a workshop. An authorized Volvo workshopis recommended.

Check the operating temperature of the transmission to help avoid damage to anyof the drive system components. If there isa risk of overheating, a warning symbol willappear in the instrument panel and a textmessage will be displayed. Follow the rec-ommendations given.

Gear selector positions for automatic transmissions
With an automatic transmission, a suitable gear is selected automatically according tocurrent speed and power requirements.
Selecting gearsThe gear selector is a shift-by-wire selector, where shifting is done electronically instead ofmechanically. This makes shifting easier andthe gear positions more distinct.

Change gear position by pushing the spring- loaded gear selector forward or rearward, or tothe side for manual shifting.

From the B position, it is possible to shift
manually. B can be selected at any time while
driving. When the accelerator pedal is released, the electric motor brakes the vehicleand the hybrid battery is recharged at thesame time. This offers additional opportunitiesto recharge the hybrid battery, since the bat-tery is charged even when the brake pedal isnot depressed. Select brake by moving the gear selector rear- ward from the D position. The currently
selected gear will be displayed in the instru-ment panel.
Push the gear selector to the right toward"
+ " (plus) and release to shift up one gear.

gear.
Push the gear selector rearward to returnto

For smooth shifting and engine performance,the transmission will shift down automaticallyif the vehicle's speed becomes too low for theselected gear.

The steering wheel paddles are a supplement to the gear selector and make it possible toshift manually without removing your handsfrom the steering wheel.

ChangeTo shift one gear:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steer- ing wheel and then release.As long as the engine speed (rpm) is withinthe permissible range for the selected gear, agear shift will take place each time a paddle ispulled. After each gear shift, a number indicat-ing the current gear will be displayed in theinstrument panel.

–Deactivate the paddles by pulling the right paddle ( +) toward the steering wheel and
holding it until the number of the currentgear is no longer displayed in the instru-ment panel.
> The transmission will revert to gear D
or B depending on which gear was

Automatic deactivation
In gear position D, the steering wheel paddles
are deactivated after a short period of time if they are not used. The number of the currentgear will no longer be displayed in the instru-ment panel. In gear position B, the paddles will not acti-
vate automatically.

P
To move the gear selector from P to another
gear, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition in mode II.
From Neutral - N
If the gear selector is in N and the vehicle has
been stationary for at least 3 seconds (with or without the engine running), the gear selectorwill be locked in that position. To move the gear selector from N to another
gear, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition in mode II.
Messages in the instrument panelIf the gear selector is locked in position, amessage will appear in the instrument panel, e.g.

There is no mechanical shiftlock function.

Drive systemsVolvo Twin Engine combines a combustion engine for the front wheels and an electricmotor for the rear wheels.
Two drive systemsDepending on the selected drive mode and power available in the electric motor, the drivesystems can either be used separately or intandem. The electric motor gets its energy from a hybrid battery located under the tunnel con-sole. The hybrid can be charged from a walloutlet or in a special charging station. Thecombustion engine can also charge the hybridbattery using a special high-voltage generator. Both the combustion engine and the electric motor can generate power directly to thewheels. An advanced control system coordi-nates both the drive systems to help optimizedriving economy.
Hybrid battery - The hybrid battery's func- tion is to store electrical current. Thisenergy is provided by plugging the charg-ing cable into an electrical outlet, throughregenerative braking or from the high-volt-age generator. This provides current topower the electric motor and to temporar-ily power the electrical air conditioning toprecondition the passenger compartment.
Combustion engine - The combustion engine starts when the charge level in thehybrid battery is too low to provide thepower output requested by the driver.
High-voltage generator 6
- Charges the
hybrid battery. Starter for the combustion engine. Can provide the combustion engine with extra electrical current.
Electric motor - Powers the vehicle using electricity. Can provide extra torque andpower during acceleration. Provides elec-trical all-wheel drive functionality. Regen-erates braking energy into electrical cur-rent.
