Initiating hybrid battery charging
The hybrid battery is charged by connecting a charging cable between the vehicle and a120/240 V outlet (alternating current). Only use the charging cable supplied with the car or a replacement cable recommended byVolvo.
CAUTION
Never connect the charging cable if there is a risk of a thunderstorm or there is lightning.
WARNING
• The charging cable must be grounded when in use. It is equipped with a cordwith a grounding conductor and agrounding plug. The plug must beinserted into an appropriate outlet that isproperly installed and grounded inaccordance with all local codes and ordi-nances and is not damaged in any way.
• Children should be supervised when inthe vicinity of the charging cable when itis plugged in.
• High voltage is present in your electricmeter housing and power distributionservice panel. Contact with high voltagecan cause death or serious personalinjury.
• Do not use the charging cable if it isdamaged in any way. A damaged or mal-functioning charging cable may only berepaired by a workshop – a authorizedVolvo workshop is recommended.
• Always position the charging cable sothat it will not be driven over, stepped on,tripped over or otherwise damaged, orcause personal injury.

Charging status in the chargingcable's charging moduleThe red and blue lights in the charging module
indicate the status of ongoing and completed charging.
Charge module: 1. Red warning light, 2. Blue status indi- cator
When the charge module is initially plugged into a wall outlet, the red warning light will flash onceto indicate that a startup safety check has beenperformed. When the safety check has beencompleted, the blue status indicator will glowsteadily and the red warning light will be off. Thecharger is now ready to be used. If the red warn-ing light continues to flash or glows steadily, afault has been detected and the charger will notdeliver power to the vehicle. Contact a Volvoretailer or a certified Volvo service technician. When the charging cable is connected to thevehicle's charging socket, the blue light will flashonce. Maintenance of the brake system
Regularly check the brake system components for wear.
To keep the vehicle as safe and reliable as possi- ble, follow the Volvo service schedule specified inthe Warranty and Maintenance Records Informa-tion booklet. New and replaced brake pads andbrake discs do not provide optimal braking effectuntil they are "broken in" by driving a few hun-dred kilometers (miles). Compensate for thereduced braking effect by applying greater pres-sure to the brake pedal. Volvo recommends onlyusing brake pads approved for your Volvo.
CAUTION
The brake system's components should be regularly checked for wear. Contact a workshop for advice on how to do this or let a workshop perform the inspection- an authorized Volvo workshop is recom-mended.

Parking brake The parking brake helps keep the vehicle sta- tionary by mechanically locking two wheels.
The parking brake controls are located in the tunnel console between the seats.
When the electric parking brake is being applied, a faint sound can be heard from the brake's elec-tric motor. This sound can also be heard duringthe automatic function check of the parkingbrake. If the vehicle is stationary when the parking brake is applied, it will only be applied to the rearwheels. If it is applied while the vehicle is moving, the normal brakes will be used on all four wheels.Braking will be transferred to only the rearwheels when the vehicle is almost stopped.

Parking brake malfunctionIf you are unable to deactivate or activate the parking brake after several attempts, contact anauthorized Volvo workshop.
A audible warning signal will sound if the parking brake is applied while the vehicle is being driven. If the vehicle must be parked before the problem is rectified, turn the wheels as when parking on an incline and put the gear selector in P.
Low battery charge levelIf the battery charge level is too low, it will not be possible to apply or release the parking brake.Connect an auxiliary battery to the vehicle if thebattery is discharged.
Replacing brake padsDue to the design of the electric parking brake, the rear brake pads must be replaced by a work-shop. An authorized Volvo workshop is recom-mended.

Fuel Volvo recommends the use of detergent gaso- line to control engine deposits.
Deposit control gasoline (gasoline with detergent additives)
Detergent gasoline is effective in keeping injec- tors and intake valves clean. Consistent use ofdeposit control gasolines will help ensure gooddriveability and fuel economy. If you are not surewhether the gasoline contains deposit controladditives, check with the service station operator.
NOTE
Volvo recommends not using external fuel injector cleaning systems, e.g. do not adddetergent additives to gasoline before or afterrefueling.
Unleaded fuelAll Volvo vehicles have a three-way catalytic con- verter and must only use unleaded gasoline. USand Canadian regulations require that pumpsdelivering unleaded gasoline are labeled"UNLEADED". Only the nozzles of these pumpswill fit in your vehicle's fuel filler inlet. It is unlaw-ful to dispense leaded fuel into a vehicle labeled"unleaded gasoline only". Leaded gasoline dam-ages the three-way catalytic converter and theheated oxygen sensor system. Repeated use ofleaded gasoline will lessen the effectiveness of
