When cleaning your vehicle, please use gen-uine Volvo car care products. All Volvo carcare products are formulated to be environ-mentally friendly.

Twin Engine vehicles
If possible, precondition the vehicle with thecharging cable before driving.
If preconditioning is not possible in coldweather, use the seat and steering wheelheating primarily. Avoid heating the entirepassenger compartment, which reduces thehybrid battery's charge level.
Choose the Pure drive mode to help mini-mize electric power consumption.
In hilly terrain, put the gear selector in modeB to utilize the electric motor's braking func-tion when the accelerator pedal is released.This helps charge the hybrid battery.

IntelliSafe - driver support
IntelliSafe is Volvo Cars' philosophy regardingvehicle safety. IntelliSafe consists of a number ofsystems, both standard and optional, that aredesigned to help make driving safer, preventaccidents and protect passengers and otherroad users.
Support
IntelliSafe includes driver support functions suchas Adaptive cruise control* which helps the driverto maintain an even speed combined with a pre-selected time interval to the vehicle ahead.
Pilot Assist2 helps the driver keep the vehicle inthe current traffic lane by providing steeringassistance and maintaining an even speed and aset time interval to the vehicle ahead.
Park Assist Pilot* helps the driver pull into andout of parking spaces.
Other examples of systems that can help thedriver are the Active main beam, Cross TrafficAlert (CTA)* and Blind Spot Information (BLIS)*systems.

Prevention

The warning symbols alert the driver that animportant function is activated or that a seriousfault or error has occurred.

Seat belt reminder

Preparing for a long trip
It is important to have the vehicle's systems andequipment checked carefully before driving longdistances.
Check that:
the engine is running properly and that fuelconsumption is normal
there are no leaks (fuel, oil or other fluid)
the brake pedal is functioning optimally
all lights are working ‒ adjust the headlightheight if the vehicle is carrying a heavy load
tire tread depth and air pressure are at cor-rect levels. Change to snow tires when driv-ing in areas where there is a risk of snowy oricy roads
the start battery is sufficiently charged
the wiper blades are in good condition

Winter driving
It is important to check the vehicle before drivingin cold/snowy conditions to make sure it can bedriven safely.
Before the cold season arrives:
Make sure the engine coolant contains 50%antifreeze. This mixture helps protect theengine from frost erosion down toapprox. -35 °C (-31 °F). Do not mix differenttypes of antifreeze as this could pose ahealth risk.
Keep the fuel tank well filled to prevent con-densation from forming.
Check the viscosity of the engine oil. Oil withlow viscosity (thinner oil) improves cold-weather starting and reduces fuel consump-tion when driving with a cold engine.
CAUTION
Low-viscosity oil should not be used with harddriving or in hot weather.
Check the condition and charge level of thestart battery. Cold weather places greaterdemands on the start battery and reduces itscapacity.
Use washer fluid containing antifreeze tohelp prevent ice from forming in the washerfluid reservoir.

Engine oil
For the recommended service intervals and war-ranties to be applied, an approved engine oilmust be used.
Volvo recommends:
If the engine oil is not checked regularly and thelevel becomes low, this could cause seriousengine damage.

CAUTION
To satisfy the requirements for the engine'sservice intervals, all engines are factory-filledwith a specially adapted synthetic engine oil.Great care has been put into the choice of oil,with consideration given to service life, starta-bility, fuel consumption and environmentalimpact.
For the recommended service intervals toapply, an approved engine oil must be used.Only use the prescribed oil grade to top off orchange the oil. Otherwise, there is a risk ofthe vehicle's service life, startability, fuel con-sumption and environmental impact beingaffected.
Failure to use engine oil of the prescribedgrade and viscosity could cause damage toengine-related components. Volvo Car Corpo-ration disclaims warranty liability for such typeof damage.
Volvo recommends entrusting oil changes toan authorized Volvo workshop.
Volvo uses different systems to warn if the oillevel is too low/high or the oil pressure is low. Onengine variants with an oil pressure sensor, a
warning symbol is displayed in the instrument
panel when oil pressure is low . On engine
variants with an oil level sensor, the warn-ing symbol in the instrument panel and displaymessages are used to alert the driver. Someengine variants have both systems. Contact aVolvo retailer for more information.
Change the engine oil and oil filter according tothe schedule specified in the Warranty and Main-tenance Records Information booklet. Oils of ahigher grade than that specified may be used. Ifthe vehicle is driven in adverse conditions, Volvorecommends using an oil with a higher gradethan that specified.

Refilling coolant
Coolant helps keep the combustion engine atthe right operating temperature. The heat trans-ferred from the engine to the coolant can beused to warm the passenger compartment.
When refilling coolant, follow the instructions onthe package. Never fill the cooling system withonly water. The risk of freezing is increased withtoo low or too high amounts of coolant.
If there is coolant under the vehicle, smoke fromthe cooling system, or if more than 2 liters (about2 quarts) of coolant has been added to the sys-tem, there could be something wrong with thecooling system and starting the vehicle coulddamage the engine. Call a tow truck and do notattempt to start the engine.

WARNING
The coolant may be very hot. Never unscrewthe cap when the coolant is hot. If coolantmust be filled, unscrew the expansion tankcap slowly to relieve overpressure.

Polishing and waxing
Polish and wax the vehicle when the paint ismatte or to provide extra protection. The vehicledoes not need to be polished until it is at least ayear old. However, it can be waxed during thefirst year. Do not polish or wax the vehicle indirect sunlight. The surface of the vehicle shouldnot be warmer than 45 °C (113 °F).
Wash and dry the vehicle very carefullybefore polishing or waxing. Remove asphaltand tar stains with asphalt remover or paintthinner. More stubborn stains can beremoved with a grinding paste designed forvehicle paint.
Use polish first and then liquid or paste wax.Follow the instructions on the package care-fully. Many products contain both polish andwax.
A wide range of polymer-based waxes canbe purchased today. These waxes are easy touse and produce a long-lasting, high-glossfinish that protects the bodywork against oxi-dation, road dirt and fading.

CAUTION
Avoid waxing and polishing plastic and rubber.
If using degreaser on plastic and rubber, onlyrub (if necessary) with slight pressure. Use asoft sponge.
Polishing glossy trim moldings can wear awayor damage the glossy surface layer.
Polish containing abrasives must not be used.

CAUTION
Only use paintwork treatments recommendedby Volvo. Other treatments, such as preserva-tion, sealing, protection, luster sealing or simi-lar, could damage the paintwork. Paintworkdamage caused by such treatments are notcovered by Volvo's warranty.

Hand washing
The vehicle should be washed as soon as itbecomes dirty. This makes the vehicle easier toclean because dirt does not attach as strongly. Italso reduces the risk of scratches and keeps thevehicle looking new. Wash the vehicle in a carwash or garage with an oil separator and use carwashing detergent.
Hand washing
Keep the following points in mind when washingthe vehicle:
Avoid washing the vehicle in direct sunlight.This could cause the detergent or wax to dryout and become abrasive.
Remove bird droppings from paintwork assoon as possible. It contains chemicals thataffect and discolor paintwork very quickly.Use e.g. soft paper or a sponge soaked inlots of water. Consult an authorized Volvoworkshop for assistance removing discolora-tion.
Hose down the underbody, including thewheel housings and bumper.
Hose down the entire vehicle and removeany loose dirt, droppings etc. to reduce therisk of scratches from washing. Do not spraydirectly onto locks.
If necessary, use cold degreaser on heavilysoiled surfaces. Note that in such cases thesurfaces must not be hot from the sun.

Cleaning exterior plastic, rubber andtrim components

Exterior plastic, rubber and trim
components
A special cleaning agent available from Volvoretailers is recommended for the cleaning andcare of colored plastic parts, rubber and trimcomponents, e.g. glossy trim. Follow the usageinstructions for the cleaning agent carefully.
Avoid using car washing detergents with a pHvalue lower than 3.5 or higher than 11.5. Doingso could result in the discoloring of anodized alu-minum surfaces* (as shown in the illustrationsbelow). Abrasive polishing agents are not recom-mended for these areas (as shown in the illustra-tions below).
Components that should be washed with a cleaningproduct with a pH value between 3.5 and 11.5.

CAUTION
Avoid waxing and polishing plastic and rubber.
