("Check Engine" light) may indicate a fault.
Important
Before you operate your car for the first time, please familiarize yours\
elf with the new-engine oil
consumption information on
page 135. You should also be familiar with the information in the
chapters one, two and four of this manual.
Information contained in the balance of the manual is extremely useful a\
nd should be read after
operating the vehicle for the first time.
The manual is structured so that it can be used for reference. For this \
reason, it should be kept in
the car for ready access.
Do not export your Volvo to another country before investigating that co\
untry's applicable safety
and exhaust emission requirements. In some cases it may be difficult or \
impossible to comply with
these requirements. Modifications to the emission control system(s) ma\
y render your Volvo not
certifiable for legal operation in the U.S., Canada and other countries.\
All information, illustrations and specifications contained in this manu\
al are based on the latest
product information available at the time of publication. Please note th\
at some vehicles may be
equipped differently, depending on special legal requirements and that o\
ptional equipment
described in this manual may not be available in all markets.
Volvo reserves the right to make model changes at any time, or to change\
specifications or design,
without notice and without incurring obligation.

Malfunction indicator lamp
On-Board Diagnostic II (OBDII): As you drive, a computer called "OBDII" monitors your car's engine,
transmission, electrical and emission systems. The CHECK ENGINE light wi\
ll light up if the computer
senses a condition that potentially may need correcting. When this happe\
ns, please have your car checked by
a Volvo retailer as soon as possible.
A CHECK ENGINE light may have many causes. Sometimes, you may not notice\
a change in your car's
behavior. Even so, an uncorrected condition could hurt fuel economy, emi\
ssion cleanliness, and driveability.
Extended driving without correcting the cause could even damage other co\
mponents in your car.
Canadian models are equipped with this warning light:
NOTE: If the fuel filler cap is not closed tightly or if the engine is runni\
ng when the car is refueled, the
Malfunction Indicator Lamp may indicate a fault. However, your vehicle's\
performance will not be affected.
Use only Volvo original or approved fuel filler caps.
Anti-lock Brake System ABS
If the warning light comes on, there is a malfunction of the ABS system \
(the standard braking system will
still function). The vehicle should be driven to a Volvo retailer for i\
nspection. See
page 19 for additional
information.

Cassettes
l Store cassettes in their cases.
l Do not touch the tape surface with your fingers.
l Tapes should not be exposed to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. \
l Keep tapes away from oil, grease and other contaminants.
l For optimal tape deck performance Volvo does not recommend the use of C-\
120 tapes.
l Take up slack using a pen or a pencil before inserting a cassette in the\
cassette slot.
Cassette cleaning
We recommend the use of the Volvo Cleaning Cassette available as a genui\
ne Volvo accessory. Regular
use improves sound quality, cleans vital parts and prevents tape tangle.\
Compact disc care
l Before using a new disc for the first time, remove any burrs in the cent\
er/outer edge by running the
stem of a pen or similar object around the hole/edge of the disc.
l Use high quality discs only.
l Keep the discs clean. Wipe them with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth, wor\
king from the center outwards.
If necessary, dampen the cloth with a neutral soap solution. Dry thoroug\
hly before using.
l Never use cleaning spray or antistatic liquid. Use only cleaners specifi\
cally made for CD's.
l Use discs of the correct size only (3.5" discs should never be used). \
l Do not put tape or labels on the disc itself.
l Volvo does not recommend the use of plastic outer rings on the disc.
l Condensation may occur on discs/optical components of the changer in col\
d winter weather. The disc
can be dried with a clean, lint-free cloth. Optical components in the CD\
changer may, however, take up
to one hour to dry off.
l Never attempt to play a disc which is damaged in any way.
l When not in use, the discs should be stored in their covers. Avoid stori\
ng discs in excessive heat,
direct sunlight or dusty locations.

driving safely. Distraction can lead to a serious accident.
l In addition to this general warning, we offer the following guidance reg\
arding specific newer features
that may be found in your vehicles:
l Never use a hand-held cellular telephone while driving. Some jurisdictio\
ns prohibit cellular telephone
use by a driver while the vehicle is moving.
l If your car is equipped with a navigation system, set and make changes t\
o your travel itinerary only
with the vehicle parked.
l Never program your audio system while the vehicle is moving. Program rad\
io presets with the vehicle
parked, and use your programmed presets to make radio use quicker and si\
mpler.
l Never use portable computers or personal digital assistants while the ve\
hicle is moving.
A driver has a responsibility to do everything possible to ensure his or\
her own safety and the safety of
passengers in the vehicle and others sharing the roadway. Avoiding distr\
actions is part of that
responsibility.
The following should be checked regularly: *
1 Washer fluid reservoir should be filled with water and solvent (wintertime: windshie\
ld washer anti-
freeze). See
page 133.
2 Power steering - When cold, the level must not be above the COLD mark and when hot it \
must not be
above the HOT mark. Top up if the level drops to the ADD mark with ATF f\
luid. See
page 137.
3 Coolant level should be between the expansion tank marks. Mixture: 50% anti-fre\
eze and 50% water.
See
page 131.
