accelerating. This is done by temporarily reducing engine torque to the \
drive wheels, which helps
improve tractive force.
Under certain circumstances, such as when driving with snow chains, or d\
riving in deep snow or loose
sand, it may be advisable to temporarily switch off this function for ma\
ximum tractive force. This is
done by pressing the STC/DSTC button on the center control panel for at \
least a half a second.
When the SC function has been switched off:
l The text window will briefly display "SPIN CONTROL OFF"
l The LED in the STC/DSTC button will be off.
The following two functions are only available with DSTC:
3. Active Yaw Control (AYC)
This function helps maintain directional stability, for example when cor\
nering, by braking one or more
of the wheels if the car shows a tendency to skid or slide laterally. Th\
is is done by activating the Anti-
lock Braking System. A pulsating sound will be audible when the function\
is active, which is quite
normal. If you apply the brakes while this function is active, the brake\
pedal will feel stiffer than usual.
This is also one of the DSTC system's permanent functions and is not aff\
ected when the DSTC button on
the center control panel is pressed.
4. Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA)
The EBA function is an integrated part of the DSTC system. EBA is design\
ed to provide full brake
effect immediately in the event of sudden, hard braking. The system is a\
ctivated by the speed with which
you depress the brake pedal.
When the EBA system is activated, the brake pedal will go down and press\
ure in the brake system
immediately increases to the maximum level. Maintain full pressure on th\
e brake pedal in order to utilize
the system completely. EBA is automatically deactivated when the brake p\
edal is released.
When the car has been parked for some time, the brake pedal may sink mor\
e than usual when the engine
is started. This is normal and the pedal will return to its usual positi\
on when it is released.
* Standard on all models except the T5 turbo.

l First connect the auxiliary battery positive (+) terminal (1) to the\
positive (+) terminal in your car's
engine compartment (2), located under a small black plastic cover atta\
ched to the fuse box cover,
marked with a "+" sign. Remove the cover on the main fuse box if necessa\
ry to access this terminal. See
page 113.
l Then connect the auxiliary battery negative (-) terminal (3) to the \
ground point in your car's engine
compartment (4).
Start the engine in the assisting car, then start the engine in the car \
with the dead battery.
l After the engine has started, first remove the negative (-) terminal j\
umper cable. Then remove the
positive (+) terminal jumper cable.
CAUTION:
Improper hookup of jumper cables or use of other than 12-volt batteries \
could result in damage to
equipment and/or the battery.
WARNING!
l Do not connect the jumper cable to any part of the fuel system or to any\
moving parts. Avoid
touching hot manifolds.
l Never expose the battery to open flame or electric spark.
l Do not smoke near the battery.
l Batteries generate hydrogen gas which is flammable and explosive.
l Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Do not allow battery fluid to cont\
act eyes, skin, fabrics or
painted surfaces. If contact occurs, flush the affected area immediately\
with water. Obtain medical
help immediately if eyes are affected.
Failure to follow the instructions for jump starting can lead to persona\
l injury.
NOTE: Refer to
pages 138-139 for information on properly maintaining the battery.

The ignition system operates at very high voltages. Special safety preca\
utions must be followed to
prevent injury. Always turn the ignition off when:
l Replacing ignition components e.g. plugs, coil, etc.

l In addition to this general warning, we offer the following guidance reg\
arding specific newer features
that may be found in your vehicles:
l Never use a hand-held cellular telephone while driving. Some jurisdictio\
ns prohibit cellular telephone
use by a driver while the vehicle is moving.
l If your car is equipped with a navigation system, set and make changes t\
o your travel itinerary only
with the vehicle parked.
l Never program your audio system while the vehicle is moving. Program rad\
io presets with the vehicle
parked, and use your programmed presets to make radio use quicker and si\
mpler.
l Never use portable computers or personal digital assistants while the ve\
hicle is moving.
A driver has a responsibility to do everything possible to ensure his or\
her own safety and the safety of
passengers in the vehicle and others sharing the roadway. Avoiding distr\
actions is part of that
responsibility.


The following should be checked regularly: *
1 Washer fluid reservoir should be filled with water and solvent (wintertime: windshie\
ld washer anti-
freeze). See
page 133.
2 Power steering - When cold, the level must not be above the COLD mark and when hot it \
must not be
above the HOT mark. Top up if the level drops to the ADD mark with ATF f\
luid. See
page 137.
3 Coolant level should be between the expansion tank marks. Mixture: 50% anti-fre\
eze and 50% water.
