Dynamic Stability Traction Control (DSTC) button
This button is available on R-models only and is used to temporarily dea\
ctivate the Spin control and
Active Yaw Control functions. See
page 126 for more information. On non R-models, DSTC is
controlled via the menu control ring on the left steering wheel lever, s\
ee
page 125.
WARNING!
Please be aware that the vehicle's handling characteristics may be affec\
ted if the Spin Control
function is switched off.

Temporarily disconnecting the alarm sensors (option)
See
page 117 for more details.
12 volt socket
This 12 volt socket can be used to plug in certain accessories such as c\
ellular telephones, etc. The
ignition key must be in position 1 (or higher) for the auxiliary socke\
t to function.
NOTE: The auxiliary sockets can also be used for cigarette lighters, which ar\
e available at your Volvo
retailer

Front/rear park assist (option/accessory)

Cruise control
Temporarily disengaging cruise control
l Press 0 to temporarily disengage cruise control. CRUISE will be displaye\
d in the information window
in the instrument panel.
l Press the brake pedal.
Press "resume"
to return to the previously set speed.
WARNING!
Cruise control should not be used in heavy traffic or when driving on we\
t or slippery roads, or when
driving on unpaved or uneven road surfaces. Cruise control may not maint\
ain set speed on steep
downgrades.

Parking brake, auxiliary socket/cigarette lighter
Parking brake (hand brake)
The lever is located between the front seats. The brake is applied to th\
e rear wheels.

When applying the parking brake
- Press firmly on the brake pedal.
- Pull up the parking brake lever as far as possible.
WARNING!
Always apply the parking brake fully when the vehicle is parked. The ind\
icator light will light up
even if the parking brake has only been partially applied. Always pull u\
p the lever as far as possible.
- Release the brake pedal and ensure that the vehicle is at a standstill\
.
- Put the gear selector in P (automatic transmission) or in 1st gear (\
manual transmission).
Parking on a hill
l If the vehicle is pointing uphill, turn the front wheels so that they po\
int away from the curb.
l If the vehicle is pointing downhill, turn the front wheels so that they \
point toward the curb.
Releasing the parking brake
- Press firmly on the brake pedal.
- Pull the lever up slightly, press the button at the end of the lever a\
nd lower the lever completely.
Auxiliary sockets
The 12 volt sockets can be used to plug in certain accessories such as c\
ellular telephones, etc. The key
must be in position I (or higher) for the auxiliary socket to function\
.
NOTE: The cover should be folded down when the auxiliary socket is not in use.\

The auxiliary sockets can also be used for cigarette lighters, which are\
available at your Volvo retailer.
NOTE: Volvo vehicles in North America do not have an ashtray in the front sea\
t as standard equipment.
If you want to have an ashtray in the front seat, please contact your Vo\
lvo retailer.

Power windows
The power windows are controlled by buttons in the arm rests. The igniti\
on switch must be ON1
(ignition key in position I, II or the engine running) for the electri\
cally operated windows to function.
To lower: Press down the front edge of the button to the first detent (\
"stop").
To raise: Lightly pull up the front edge of the button to the first dete\
nt ("stop").
Auto up/down function (front doors only):
Either front door window can be opened or closed automatically.
Auto down: Press the front part of the button as far down as possible and release \
it immediately. To
stop the window at any time, pull the button up.
Auto up: Pull the front part of the button up as far as possible and release it \
immediately. To stop the
window at any time, press the button down.
NOTE: The electrically operated windows in the front seat have an overload pr\
otecting circuit breaker
which reverses movement of the electrically operated windows to their st\
arting points if they are
obstructed in any way. Thereafter the windows will operate normally agai\
n.

Extending the cargo area
Removing a seat cushion
To make the loading space as flat as possible when the rear seat backres\
ts are folded down, the rear seat
cushions can be removed. To do so:
- Pull the strap on the rear seat cushion and pull the cushion forward t\
oward the front seat backrests.
- Unlock the two red locking tabs.
- Lift out the seat cushion.
When replacing, do everything in reverse order. Make sure the red lockin\
g tabs are in the locked
position when the seat cushion has been put back into place.

Auxiliary rear-facing child seat (option)
The auxiliary seat is designed to hold two belted occupants who each wei\
gh:
l In U.S.A.: between 66-88 lbs (30-40 kg), and who are not taller than 5\
5 inches (140 cm).

l In Canada: between 50-88 lbs (23-40 kg), and who are not taller than 5\
5 inches (140 cm).
Using the auxiliary seat with smaller occupants
l In the U.S.A: children who weigh between 33-66 lbs (15-30 kg), and who\
are not taller than 47 inches
(120 cm) may occupy the auxiliary seat only together with a booster cu\
shion that meets U.S.
government safety standards.
l In Canada: children who weigh between 41-66 lbs (18.5-30 kg), and who \
are not taller than 47 inches
(120 cm) may occupy the auxiliary seat only together with a booster cu\
shion that meets Canadian
government safety standards.
WARNING!
A booster cushion's detachable backrest must not be used in conjunction \
with the auxiliary seat, and
should be removed.
Install the auxiliary seat correctly in accordance with the installation\
instructions provided with the seat.
Raising the seat
- Remove the cargo area cover, if installed, from the vehicle. Raise the\
backrest section forward until it
locks in place.
- Flip the seat cushion over.
Stowing the seat
- Flip the seat cushion back into storage position.
- Pull the release handle and lower the backrest to storage position.
NOTE:
- If you have locked the vehicle with the remote control and if you then\
afterwards use a key in the
tailgate's lock cylinder (certain models) to unlock the tailgate only,\
the alarm will sound. See
page 116
for information on turning off a sounding alarm.
- Please also refer to the decal located on the auxiliary seat for furth\
er information on using this seat.
- Canadian models: other regulations apply for the use of the auxiliary \
seat in Canada. Please refer to the
decal on the seat.

WARNING!
l If your vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary seat (option or accessory\
), the tailgate must be fitted
with a lock cylinder. Unlocking from the outside can then be carried out\
in the usual way (key in
driver's door and/or remote control) and also by using the key in the t\
ailgate.
l All rear seat backrests must be up when the auxiliary seat is being used\
.
l The auxiliary seat's head restraint(s) should be properly positioned t\
o help provide the best support.
l The seat belt(s) should be properly fastened.
l The accessory steel cargo grid should never be mounted in the vehicle wh\
en the auxiliary seat is
used. See
page 104 for instructions on removing the steel grid.
l The luggage net should be retracted.
l The child safety lock in the tailgate should be on to prevent children f\
rom inadvertently opening
the tailgate from the inside.
l Failure to follow each of the instructions above will increase the risk \
of occupants being injured
during a sudden stop or collision.

Cargo area
Holder for grocery bags (option)
- Open the tailgate.
- Lift the hatch in the cargo area floor to fold up the grocery bag hold\
er.
- Hang or secure your grocery bags by means of tensioning straps or hold\
ers.
To remove the plastic tray (option), turn the two knobs at the sides. \

Cargo area lighting
An extra roof lamp is fitted at the end of the cargo area.
Auxiliary 12 Volt socket in cargo area (option)
Fold down the cover when you want to use the electric socket.
NOTE: The socket is live whether the ignition is switched on or off. Using th\
e socket without the
engine running can drain your vehicle's battery.

Securing cargo
As a safety precaution, your vehicle is equipped with four eyelets in th\
e cargo space to which straps can
be attached to secure luggage.
WARNING!
l The eyelets for securing cargo are not to be used as passenger restraint\
s or as anchorages for child
restraints.
l Unless the vehicle is equipped with an optional Volvo auxiliary seat for\
children, passengers
should not ride in the rear cargo area.
Keep the following in mind when loading the vehicle
The load carrying capacity of your vehicle is determined by factors such\
as the number of passengers,
the amount of cargo, the weight of any accessories that may be installed\
, etc. See the section "Vehicle
loading" in the chapter "Wheels and tires" for more detailed information\
.
l Remember that a 44 lbs object produces a force of 2,200 lbs in a head-on\
collision at 30 mph.
